So I've been watching Neil Tyson's remake of "Cosmos".

I refrained from watching this version for a few reasons. Most notably because I was very much affected by the original series and Neil has always struck me as a guy who wants to be Carl Sagan v2.0.

I'm through episode 2 and so far I have to say my instincts were pretty much correct.

Although one moment in episode 2 caught me well off guard.

Episode 2 is all about Darwinian Evolution and they illustrate it using the "Tree of Life".

At one point Neil, whilst standing under this tree boldly proclaims "Evolution is a FACT".

    I chortle a bit.

Then he goes on to say, in so many words, that being exposed to such ideas that have come out of the Scientific Community have lead him to have spiritual experiences.

    And I'm like "No Way!!!"

    The guy who said this...

“God is an ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance.”
    ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson

    ...just said THAT!?!?!

And the look on his face when he said it was like that of a constipated man trying to push poop out sideways.

So then I'm like "Alright, Neil is going to talk about his "spiritual experiences".

    But that was it.

I dunno. Maybe he gets into it in later episodes?

  2. I think I stopped watching after the 2nd episode too.. but a person can be spiritual and not believe in God or religion, an atheist can be spiritual. And evolution is an established fact. It is a simple fact too, that things gradually change over a long period of time. We know life evolved.. if you want to believe that evolution is a product/will of God, so be it.. but it is a fact that life evolved and is continuing to evolve.

It does not add up to me though. And it came across as insincere to me especially when he didn't elaborate on his spiritual experiences. I thought that maybe, just maybe, someone was forcing him to make such a statement, most likely whoever it is that funds his show.

I know that Neil has stated that he is agnostic in the past.

    And that's nice.

    But...

Your comment raises an interesting idea.

Seeing that the term "God" is such a slippery, virtually undefinable term in practical applications....

I would ask this. Is there a shared belief system out there in which there is a focus on the Spirit, yet treats the macrocosmic universe as though it were dead like Scientifc Culture does?

  4. Where are the facts? Because I can scientifically prove that the Bible is correct and the world really is only about 6000 years old and it only took the Father 6 days to create everything. If you'd like, you can look up a man named Kent Hovind and watch his videos about creationism v evolution and all sorts of other things that would probably rub you the wrong way.

Your evolution theory has MANY gaps in it.

All of the matter in the universe came from nothing. Then "something" happened and a Big Bang occurred. Blah blah blah.

Can you tell me how stars form? Since we've never seen one form before.

And evolution is not a known fact. It's a religion. Just like Scientology, Christianity, Buddhism, Catholicism, etc.

  5. He may have been blowing smoke as to get more people on board.. but he could also be a spiritual person. It's like Buddhists, they're technically atheist and spiritual.

As for the dead cosmos, I think that's a gross misrepresentation. Granted it would technically be dead since it isn't living.. but it is a dynamic system full of mystery that is worthy of appreciation for what it is. That is what science tried figuring out, what exactly is going on with the dynamic, vibrant, dark and mysterious, awe inspiring, wonderful, chaotic cosmos.

As for a belief you're looking for, don't know what it'd be called, but there are plenty of people out there who believe the universe is consciousness. Some people refer to it as God, while others leave God out of it.. but they also typically believe that the consciousness of the universe can be scientifically proven, but more than likely can't be. That would be a spiritual (emotional) belief and doesn't really state the universe is dead.. but isn't really alive either, just that it is conscious.

Maybe he didn't elaborate because every experience would be spiritual? I don't consider myself a spiritual person because there are a lot of assumptions that people have when you say you're spiritual.. but there is very little that doesn't amaze me in one form or another. Everyday stuff like the flow of traffic, or how bird poop splatters, or the wind carrying a leaf far away, or just about anything. If I considered myself spiritual, I'd consider all my experiences to be such as well.

  6. Te he he..

  7. What's funny?

  8. that if what you claimed you can scientifically prove was true, you'd have a Nobel Peace prize and have been all over TV and the media as the first person to prove the bible true...

You answer for your evolution friend now?

I wouldn't be on the news for proving the bible correct. I would be thrown in jail and made to look like a mad man or a terrible human being for going against the world and being a blasphemer. Why don't they teach other beliefs in public school? Why only evolution and the Big Bang?

Fuck, Obama got a Nobel peace prize. What did he do?

  10. I can respond to any post on here, it being a public forum and what not, thats how these things work...

you said scientifically prove it, meaning with actual facts that can't be refuted...and in America, you'd be a celebrity for proving the bible correct, Christians are famous just for being a christian....

and they teach science in schools, not random beliefs, that'd be stupid to entertain every belief just because someone believes it...instead to study science that has facts that you can duplicate and share with others....

and again, are you actually going to do any proving or just conjecture?

  11. You're saying the bible isn't science?

They don't teach science in schools. They teach evolution. Which is a belief. Just like me believing that the bible is scientific fact. Look up a man named Kent Hovind and watch some of his videos. My proof is the bible. Try understanding it and actually reading it for what it is. It doesn't contradict itself and is not false in any fashion.

    B- basic
    I- instructions
    B- before
    L- leaving
    E- earth

Yes i am saying the bible isn't science, it makes claims that cannot be put through the scientific method, it is a religious text no different from the qu'ran, torah, shruti etc etc....just because you happen to believe in it doesn't make it the truth, you just think it is...now on with the irrefutable facts that prove the bible is true...not opinion or acronyms, actual scientific data that proves the existence of God (since that is what the bible is about, a God that created everything and his son that died for our sins)

and they teach sciences in school, you know chemistry, astronomy, biology...you know science...and evolution is part of biology...

and the Bible contradicts itself quite a bit, if you read it you would know that, it even has 2 creation stories that don't match...

  13.  you said you could scientifically prove the bible is true and that the world is 6000 years old...i do not want any videos from anyone else, i want YOU, the person that made the claim that they can scientifically prove the bible, to actually back up the claim...

  15. I thought you were joking.. my bad. You have a natural gift for humor though, should try standup.

  16. I never personally made the claim that the earth is 6000 years old. The bible states it to be that. Which is what I believe. I don't have to prove anything to you. It's already been done for me. Read it for what it is. How is me telling you to look up a video that will give you scientific evidence that the bible is true, not giving you proof backing up my belief?

People who like to bash the bible don't truly read it. Just because it says one thing then says that same thing over again but in a different way doesn't mean it contradicts itself. For
instance when it talks about Solomon and his horsemen...

    How many stalls and horsemen?

1KI 4:26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

2CH 9:25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

It says he has forty thousand stalls OF horses FOR his chariots and twelve thousand horsemen.

The next verse states that Solomon has stalls for four thousand horse AND chariots and twelve thousand horsemen.

    How does that contradict itself?

Why do some of you see this as a laughing matter? You laugh at me as though to belittle me. Don't raise your nose at me. Can you not discuss this like the adult you are? Why do you think my way is wrong and false? How do you know? Is evolution not a belief just like believing in a God that gave us this life and everything we see as a gift of being his children? How is that unbelievable? I'd do the same for my kids if I had the power to do so.

Evolution is more of a laughable matter. In the beginning there was nothing. Then that nothing became something. Which then that something exploded millions and millions of years ago and created everything we see today. (Along with some other garbage thrown in). Even that right there contradicts itself no matter how you say it or read it. You can't get something out of nothing. How do you react when you have nothing to react? Have I pushed too many buttons by testing your belief? Is this why you laugh it off?

Why do some of our planets in the solar system spin backwards? As well as some moons, they spin the opposite direction of the planet they orbit.

So the largest living organism (whale) is as big as life gets (as far as we know). And the smallest is a specific form of bacterium.

Anything below the "bacterium scale" and anything above the "large mammal scale" would be illegal to characterize as "living", "alive", "intelligent", or "conscious"? Right?

I could not find one that fit the criteria either.

Individuals have direct experiences, which are sacred simply for the fact that they cannot be directly shared. But believe me, I'm all for a "directly shared experience system" to emerge. And seeing that the universe has consistently behaved as a novelty generating and conserving engine, maybe we can have that someday.

So it's aware (conscious) but it's dead? Sounds tricky.

There is nothing you can do about the assumptions others make. The only thing you can do is choose the best words that you feel represent yourself.
