Hot water fades away color on glass piece?

  1. My glass pipe was getting kind of dirty so I ran it under hot water form the tap to clean it. Once I did that some of the design on the pipe faded away, why's that? It's not noticeable until you put it under light.

  2. Some glass changes color as it gets used, here's an example of such cheers ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1426278843.236306.jpg ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1426278866.136023.jpg

-Appreciate what you got cause one day it can all be gone-

  3. Idk if that's normal man. None of the pieces I've had ever changed colors but they were solid color not like painted or drawn on so I can't say if it's just the paint coming off or actual chips of the glass which would be dangerous to be smoking shards of chipped glass

I am very familiar on how weed smoking darkens pipes but that's not it. The drawings on the pipe LITERALLY start fading away from the hot water washing it off.

No no, it's not that. It's the DRAWING/DESIGN that's fading away because the hot water seems to wash it off.

  5. Post a pic

  6.
Sounds like they used water soluble paint on it then.

  7.
Huh guess so. Oh well it's not so much the water but HOT water. I guess I'll use rubbing alcohol and salt.

I would but I'm too lazy.

  8. How do you post a picture? I'll let you guys see it.

  9. If hot water takes off the paint rubbing alcohol and salt will likely remove it completely.

Take a pic or 2 with your phone.  Go to your gallery, create album and upload photo.  Then click your media in the chat box...you can figure out the rest.  Personally not sure how to attach pictures though.

  10. Bake on labels? Is that what your talking about?

If not applied correctly this can deff happen

  11. The hot water washed away the built up resin in the pipe.
Color changing glass only changes color because of
    the black resin behind it.

Hot water didn't wash off the color.  You just can't see
it anymore.  It'll come back when you smoke again and
    build up more resin.

  12. It looks like everything has been covered. My guess would also be that you are referring to a baked on label that is coming off, or you have fumed glass.

Before this it was nice and the design was all complete. This is what it looks like after a simple hot tap water wash.

Pipe next to a regular sized bic for scale.

  15. After some quick research...its fumed glass.  Which means there is a coating of minerals on the inside of the glass.

  16. I guess op didn't know qhat fumming was like he thought he did

  17. That's fumed glass man. Just like everybody said.

  18.
Thanks for the reply but what does "fumed" exactly mean?

    What does "fumed" mean?

  19. Silver and/or gold are used during the blowing process. The glass looks clear when clean, but as resin builds up, you can see the fuming. This is what people mean when they say "color changing glass."

Ohhh haha thank you so much, well that's awsome then!
