How to seal a bamboo pipe?

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by BraveAsANoun, Mar 12, 2015.

  1. Hey all! I make pipes out of bamboo and river cane, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to seal the small gaps in between the bowl and the stem. Normally I would use a small bit of hot glue but I intend to sell them so I feel that I should use something natural and more ascetically pleasing, any suggestions? They'd probably function as is, but I'd like them to be completely airtight.

  2. I would use a small amount of clear glue, than cut away the extra once is dries, only way I see it possible. Maybe you could put a small piece of bamboo flush against the glue so it won't be seen? Just a thought good luck!

-Appreciate what you got cause one day it can all be gone-

  3. Thanks for the suggestion! I thought about that, but I don't want to have to tell people they're made with glue, in case they might be concerned about inhaling some. Also, where I live there are allot of hipster types with money to burn and they absolutely eat up anything that can be claimed to be "natural". I don't use power tools for this very reason, even though it would be much quicker and easier.

  4. If that's the case I would carve the wood to where it kinda plugs in snugly, maybe find some type of natural glue or gum paste. I agree with the all natural would be a selling point for a lot.

  5. Yeah I've heard that tree resin and charcoal can make a glue is you mix then and heat it up, I think I'm going to experiment with that. Thanks a bunch!

  6. Have you thought about some kind of clay maybe?

  7. Yes but I'm not sure what kind I would use, to google!

  8. maybe use weed resin, very sticky and the natural lovin hipsters will be all over it

  9. Cultivate caulobacter crescentus and obtain the natural glue that they produce.

All jokes aside, (even though that'd work) isn't there natural glue that you can buy?

  10. Resin would be good if it didn't heat up and get runny. There are natural glues that I could buy but I'm honestly not interested in spending any money on them if I don't have to, you can get a nice glass pipe for ten bucks at the head shop so the most I'm hoping to get is five a pop, although I'll definitely try for more. Although if I decorate them with geometric designs using a sautering iron I imagine I could get more.

  11. tree sap? Haha

  12. use rubber grommets. go to the local home store and look around.

  13. Maybe beeswax would work if it wasn't too close to the heat.

  14. +1 on the beeswax idea, antimicrobial as well if i remember correctly, beeswax has 100s of uses haha.

  15. Bees wax is a great idea

  16. Anything that softens when it gets hot is not going to work for a glue on your pipes.  I suggest that you simply precision shape the parts so that you get a good tight fit.
