New Journey, 1000w ScROG, ebb n flow buckets

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Grow Journals' started by ChronicProblem, Mar 12, 2015.

1. Hello, fellow growers, I am starting a new grow after nearly a 2 year break while i had to tackle some personal road blocks. I plan on using this grow journal to document the performence of the new setup i am running, to have a community of growers to keep me motivated, and most of all to learn from the community.  Here is the setup:

Strain: Barneys farm Liberty Haze S-1 seeds(created from my previous grows so i know they are female)

Veg/Clone tent(52"x23"x48"):
2 - T5HO lamps
2-4-plant bubble boy buckets
1 - 8 plant bucket mister clone bucket
seeds were started in rockwool in the evening on march 2nd.

Flower Room(55"x55"x79")
4 - ebb N flow buckets with control and res buckets outside of tent.
1000w HPS in aircooled reflecter.
i still need to make my scrog net but will get to that as i get closer.
may add co2 during flowering

Nutrients: Advance Nutes grow,micro,bloom

i came across a newer line called Cyco Nutrients that I keep hearing good things about, have any of you guys used this before and have any info on them? i may use them in the future.

I have also been using the grow buddy app to help keep track of things for me so i am going to review it and put some pics and info up to catch you guys up on how things have gone since i planted these beans.

everyone is welcome to follow along, contribute and leave constructive feedback

2. MAR 2nd: In the evening I planted 8 seeds into pre soaked rockwool and set them on a tray lying on a heating pad. it was very low temps this week so i wanted to keep them warm as i could.

MAR 5th: First sign of seeds cracking and taproots coming out. nothing else too exciting

MAR 6th: i got my grow rooms constructed and ready to receive the plants once they sprout.

MAR 8th: All seeds have sprouted. and i transplanted them into the netpots and filled with clay pellets, and put them in there respective buckets inside the tent with 24hr lighting. each bucket has its own airpump and large airstone, but are not connected yet because i wanted to give them a little bit to grow some roots down and i would just top feed RO water at 6.0PH for a couple days

MAR 9th: i caved and decided to hook up one of the bubble buckets and see the difference. So, A328,329,332,333 have been set up in bubble bucket, added 50ml of cloning mix to 4 gal water set at 300ppm and ph of 5.8 temp 75 deg. gonna wait a day or two for the others to see the difference

MAR 10th: it looked like the plants i had hooked up to the bucket were healthier but could have been coincedent

MAR 11th: Definite visible growth difference: bubble bucket batch already trying to push up next set of leaves while no sign on the others, so i hook them up to the bucket with same settings as the other.

MAR12th: the last 3 pics i just took today to show you the difference between the two buckets.

trying to decide if i should start them on there normal veg nutes now, any suggestions? I might just wait till tomorrow and do rez and nute change then

4. Just got back from out of town for a few days, starting to have cal/mag deficiencies, i just found my cal-mag so i am gonna do a res change and go up to 1/2 strength nutes and add the cal-mag. Should be back to normal in a couple days. I will post pics when i do the res change later. They are gettting bigger, i think another week and i am gonna top or FIM them once they get around 10-12". Any suggestions?

5. UPDATE- Finally starting to get things dialed in. I switched from 24hr light to 19/5 and the girls look a lot healthier after only a couple days, but the PH was a little high and i lowered that as well down to 5.5, PPM sitting at 900ppm.

it has been 4 weeks since i planted the seeds, my plan is to take 4 of them to the flower room with the scrog net, top them and then veg them for another week to grow up to the scrog then go to 12/12 and fill it out.

Sorry for the lack of updates, i just started a new job and it has had me busy for the past couple weeks, but things should be settled down now. the pictures i took did not save so i will have to go down again and take a few.

6. I'm subbed up for the ride on this one. I'm a brand new grower so I've been reading a lot of these journals to try and learn as much as I can. What are the characteristics of the strain you're growing and is it indica, sativa, or a mix?

7. This is S1 of Barneys farm LibertyHaze it is my first time growing it from the s1 seeds but if it is anything like the original it is a sativa dominate hybrid with a couple different phenos. These seeds came from the more indica variety, so we will see.

I attached a pic of the flower tent which I am getting ready to move 4 of them to to get ready for the scrog. The one pic shows the cal-mag deficiency I had, but once I got the ph dialed in, the nutes right and introduced a dark period they started taking off.

8. Those leaves are fat! They definitely look like an indica dominant strain. I just had to scrap my first ever grow due to root rot. I learned a ton though, and the new round went into the reservoir tonight. So that rusty looking leaf is a cal-mag deficiency?

9. Yeah it appears so, cal-mag is a must for hydro if you use RO, I have RO water since my tap water is super hard over 500+ppm. i forgot to add it when i did my first dose, i also let my PH drift up in the 6.2 range, soon as i added the cal mag and brought the PH down to around 5.5-5.6 they started to take off and look healthy again.
My room is in the basement in a non insulated room so my rez temps stay pretty low, I have never had any issues with root rot. I thought i did a few times back when I was using Liquid Karma, dyes the roots pretty good. Hydro is tough for a first time grow, I started using Aero, went to soil for simplicity then back to hydro again.

10. Reverse osmosis is the same thing as distilled water right?

11. reverse osmosis refers to the process of forcing water through a filtration system and membrane and distilled is condensing of the steam vapor, so yes in both the end product is really clean water, but the process is different. distilled is usually cleaner and closer to 0ppm in in the end. so you would definitely want to supplement some sort of cal/mag/micro nutes with distilled aswell

12. Ahhh ok, that makes sense to me. I've got calmag so I should be good. Thanks for the explanation. I can't wait to see some pics of what you're doing!

13. I went out of town for a couple days and my wife managed to keep the plants alive. Yay! but...

I transferred 4 plants(the worst looking ones)to the scrog room(ebb n flow buckets) right before i left, My theory was that if something went wrong, I wouldn't kill my best ones. after the first night a couple of the buckets were not getting water because i had the controller bucket was out side of the room and the tubing height was off. so 2 of the plants suffered a good bit.

So after some adjustments i got things going good with the control bucket inside the tent and the plants started to bounce back. I filled the rez with lower strength nutes adjusted the PH to 5.7ish. I am using a 1000w MH light(set to 75%) in a air cooled hood and it is maybe 2-3ft form the buckets.

When i got back PH was at 6.1 and i started to see a lot of the issues i did previously when it drifted high. this strain seems to like its PH at 5.5-5.6 anything higher and they start to have issues. I lowered it back to 5.5 and added some Silica Blast to aid in the recovery. i hope to see them start kicking back again in a couple days.

Now, the 4 Plants i left in the bubble buckets practically doubled in size in 4 days and are doing AMAZING. Gonna put  some pics up once i charge my phone. I am glad i transferred the other plants first to work out the kinks. Overall things are going good. I am going to top them all tonight and then let them do their thing.

15. Alright yall,  i need your opinions!! I am at a cross roads, Since my plants in the bubble buckets are doing so well and my ones in the ebb and flow buckets have stalled a lot since they have gone through a lot of stress during the switch and getting the system under control. I have been thinking i should just kill the 4 in the ebb and flow buckets and take clones of the other four and move them to the scrog room. this will do several things for me. 1. it will free up room in the veg tent( Those 4 plants are so big they are already overtaking the tent). 2. It will bring my best plants foreward and allow them to reach the highest potential. 3. That is kind of what i moved them over for, to experiment with(the bottom left one i FIM'd to experiement and it turned out well.) now that i got the kinks worked out, the rest should flourish. the bad things is that it will rely on the rest of the plants to have no more issues(flower or clones).  Let me Know what you think!

16. It might be worth it to continue on with the plants that you've had issues with, for the sake of experience. Growing a healthy plant is relatively easy compared to getting the best possible outcome for a plant that has been stressed a couple of times due to environment, sickness, etc. Just a thought!

17. Ok, So i think I know what i am going to do. I am going to flower the ones i have had issues with and continue to try new things with them. and I am going to take clones from the tops of the other plants to cut back there size and create TONS of shoots for when i move them to flower. This way i will have back ups at each stage. as for the ones I will flower, 1 plant i FIM'd, 2 plants I am going to LST and 1 with be a control subject. Just picked up some Orca and AN- Big Bud as well.

18. Pics. I can't believe how big the plants in the bubble buckets are getting. I might try and take 2 of them outside at some point because there is no way the buckets or tent are going to be able to support the 4 plants and I need more room for the clones. I put in the scrog and switched to hps bulb to help them stretch out a bit to help fill scrog faster.

19. I moved some power around and now i have my 1000w HPS on 100%, so i am hoping to see some faster growth starting. PH in the rez at 5.7 EC 1.5 and temp is at 68F.  I am hoping that they will start filling up the screen in a week. i'd probably be getting ready to flip them if the others were under the scrog.

I took 4 cuttings from the mothers to test out the cloner and make sure that it is running well. I added a little bit of cloning solutions and also dipped the cuttings in gel before placing them in the cloner. PH is at 5.8. if all goes well i am going to take more cuttings then try and find a way to flower the moms.
