DIY Gravity Fed Watering System?

Discussion in 'Do It Yourself' started by akstoner, Mar 10, 2015.

  1. What's up guys?! I have a question for somebody. I'm trying to set up a watering system for my plants, so all I have to do is dump my water into a reservoir and walk away instead of watering each plant individually. First question is, drip method or full watering every other day? I can see benefits and cons in both. So in your experiences, is a steady drip better or a regular watering schedule? Second question is where can I find some plans to do this? It's my dream to not have to pull my plants out and fumble with them multiple times a week when I could just set up a system that I can dump in a reservoir and walk away happy! Thanks in advance

  2. Well, if you feel that way and want a designed autonated system, and the knowledge to run it successfully...How much is that info worth to you?  Many people here could provide you with all the info you need to do what you are dreraming about.

If you do not want to pay attention to your plants;  Then you will not learn hopw to grow them properly and will constantly have issues.  If it a stealth issue;  There are many ways to do what you are attempting to do.

I am not trying to be negative, but I have a hard time giving knowledge to a person that does not want to take the time to leartn and grow successfully with passion.

Are you planning an indoor grow?

You need soil-less medium such as hydroton, perlite, or a mixture of inert mediums in order to acheive your dream.  Soil will not work, as it demands constant attention and the plant uses more solution st times more than other times.  over-watering, Underwatering, can have detrimental effets on your grow.

  3. You haven't given enough information. I am assuming you are in soil since this is even a question. Sounds to me that you want a hydro setup. If you are in a soil, a simple drip system will do fine. Let Google be your guide.

  4. Thanks for the replies guys! I guess I should have clarified. I'm using a mix of 50-50 perlite and vermiculite, mixed one part this mixture to two parts soil. My grow space is really inconveniently located so every time I go to water them, I either have to take them out and water, then wrestle them back into the small space, or pretzel myself in there to get an even watering. I just want a reservoir with a hose coming out the bottom leading to my soil so I can put the water/nutes straight into it and let it water them for me. But I have no clue how to do this, what fittings are required, etc. As far as the drip goes, I was wondering if it would be beneficial to constantly drip water on the soil or just feed them on a normal schedule?

I ahve been mentoring people who wish to grow their own "Meds" for over 10 years.  I am sad, today.  Build a frame and put a reservoir on top of it.  ..........................................................................................

If you go into a hydro store and tell them what you want to do, they will sell you the tubes and fittings you need to accomplish it. [IMG]

  7. have you considered using blumats?

if you get them make sure you get the "blumat tropf". there is plenty of info on the web if you want to learn more about them.
i think they would fit your need perfectly.

  8. Can we assume you have electricity.

And;  No;  You woudl not want to continuously drip in a soil container.

Easiest thing would be to Build a reservoir, (trash can, 5 gallon bucket)  fill with solution, add a 10 pond pumpo, and some 1/2 tubing apuymp and some 1/2 tubing.  This would enable you to fashi0on a controlable watering system, that you could just turn on when you are ready to water. :)

  9. I would have to go with Latewood. First off i wouldnt want an automated watering system for soil because as stated above the plants  dont use a set amount of water / nutes over a specific time. When they are little they may only need water every 30 hours and when they are near the end they could be getting water 3 times a day. Same goes for the nutes, not every plant in your grow is going to need the exact same dose of nutes, some may get over loaded and need to skip a day. Also i like to individually water plants as this forces you to actually look at them clear dead leaves trim where needed and keep up basic maintenance. if you just walk up turn on a pump for 30 seconds and walk away things arnt going to go well..

a much easier solution would be a garden pump sprayer with a wand...just stick it in, this is what i do so i dont have to climb threw my room.

if your set on a fed system you can set up the res (as said a large bucket and pump) then have individual valves (shut offs)on a t system with independent tubing for each of your plants so u can water one at a time and monitor how much they are getting.
