Vasculitis Coumadin and MJ

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Blondie2014, Mar 3, 2015.

  1. Had a bit of a scare today. My INR was at 5.7 and I been feeling off. Dizzier than usual, foggier than usual, even more forgetful than usual. I have a very rare condition in which vasculitis is a big part and I take 12mg Coumadin every day. What caused my usually normal INR to spike? I had an edible late yesterday and wondering if that could be the cause.

Does anyone have any links to studies what the effect of MJ is on INR levels? Or.. Any personal experience?

  2. I could not find any articles on the two aside from the one posted above. It seems to be pretty inconclusive if marijuana has a significant effect on prothrombin time in warfarin users, or in the general population for that matter. On any new meds, even NSAIDs? Drink a lot of cranberry juice, or make any changes in your diet? Any recent viral illness? Many herbal supplements can have antiplatelet effects as well.

What condition do you have, if you don't mind me asking? I have an autoimmune vasculitis, so I was curious. Good luck to you.

  3. Cereal killer.. That cracks me up. You are speaking my language my friend. Auto immune vasculitis, among others. My condition is extremely rare and most doctors I've seen never even heard of it. Those that did were like oh I recall, reading something about that. It's,literally a shear stroke of luck I got a diagnosis.

I've been on warfarin for nearly ten years. I'm well versed, usually, in what may make INR change. No new meds, no real, diet change, no,cranberry juice. It's slightly possible I doubled a dose. Even then it shouldn't spike that much. I guess jury is still out.

I took Coumadin for years while both smoking and not smoking and my INR was rock solid steady.  There are other things that do have a huge impact on INR levels though, for instance I briefly took another heart drug that caused my INR to spike so I think you should look elsewhere.  I gotta say 12mg is a huge dose but a 5.7 INR isn't high enough to cause your symptoms.  I think your dizzy foggy forgetfulness is from your edible still hanging around.

  5. Thanks for the info. My condition causes those symptoms and it's possible I was/am having a spell now. That may affect my INR also, maybe. Y 12 a day is quite a bit.

  6. On six mg warifin daily and med cannabis since December. So far my INR has been steady. Sorry for your scare. Keep us updated on any findings.
