how much LED is too much, such a thing?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by RUSH Fanatic, Mar 2, 2015.

  1. Can you have to much LED lighting?

What I have. 2'x4'x6' grow rack, 180w led + 240w led. I was thinking another 240w led would come in handy.  Too much?

I like the idea of using multiple leds, just in case one goes out, I have another...

Pics in the RUSH Album, Part Deux in my sig.

    Thanks.

  2. I guess you could have too much light but what you have suggested is definitely not too much.

I have a similar sized tent with a 450w, and two 300w LEDs

  3. Not with LED's the worst that usually happens is bleaching the leaves but just move them a bit away and it's all good. Like to see someone put a 1000w HPS in a 2x4x6 with no ventilation.

  4.
    Why? What would that prove?

  5. thanks fellas. sounds like I'm on the right track LED wise.

I did over water my 1st two new starts before I transplanted them, so they're in a bit of recovery.  :(

any advice on over exposing new starts. I think I read somewhere on here about that. maybe I need a seedling rack with lower watt lights for the first week or so.

  6. Sorry to just jump in here but I'm looking for the best LED light for my 2x2x5 tent. Gonna keep it in my bedroom so wondering about ventilation? How to best set that up when I'm using LED, small Jardin tent, hydro (vermeculite/pearlite). I'm guessing a couple fans & ducting out the window?

  7.
What are you calling "new starts"? Seedlings?
I like to start seedlings with 20w CFLs, the amount of them depending on how many seedlings. These are good for a week, but can be used for longer

All the LEDs on this website I thoroughly recommend http://www.mars-hydro.com/led-grow-light
You want around a 600w system in that area (that would only actually use about 300watts)

To be specific you want one of these....

Just a heads up to people here I, too am interested in the use of LED lighting.

I think we need to keep in mind that a 10 watt LED lightbulb is of equivalency to a 60 watt incandescent and compared to HID lights is half the wattage but the same quality.

So multiply your LED wattage by 2 and there is your equivalency in HID format.

Me, I'm only trying to keep 4 plants in veg until they can bloom in the California sun so I'm going to try just one of these 220 watt units.

If that's not enough it'll be a couple months before I can buy a new one because they're over $400 US each.

It's worth every penny because of the low heat on top of the oversized heatsink and fan combo on the interior....  It's a really nice unit.

Edit:  Sorry it's 50% better than HID not 100%...

  10.
that's what I'm looking for! Thanks  :bongin:

I guess it's a good thing I've never been in the HID world, so led, led, led. get the led out :)

I hear ya on the $$$, easily $500 into my leds, exhaust fan/filter combo, circulation fans, soil + ewc

  12. I was just making a point that you can have 1000w LED and only raise the temp 5-10 deg or have a 1000w hps and have it raise the temp 10-20+ more in a small tent. If your trying to grow on a budget it will save you a lot in energy and ventilation cost.

I can easily run two 300watt mars hydro lights in a 2x4x5 with all the vents open and small ran moving air around inside the tent (stays at 70-75 with 3 extra cfls running). However if your growing photos you might want to get a very small intake fan so that way you can seal off all the light leaks, but with autos you can leave all the vents open since light leaks won't effect them if your doing 24/0/

  14.
You have never used an LED have you? Lol. I use LEDs and HPS and that statement is laughable

  15. Actually I have and that's why I know from experience that a 1000w HPS is going to heat up a tent a lot more than a 1000w LED.

You said buying an LED will save you on ventilation costs haha that's a joke right? an HPS and decent fan is going to still be much cheaper than an equivalent LED

Ventilate adequately and the temperature will be optimum whatever light you use. A 1000w HPS may produce twice the heat as a 1000w LED but it will also grow twice the yield too.

I have 600w HPS in one tent (uses 620watts) and 3 LEDs collectively using 610watts in another tent. The LEDs warm up the tent the same as the HPS.

Comparing a 1000w HPS with an LED rated at 1000watts is just silly. They are not comparable in any way at all

  17.
Watt equivalents should have no meaning in the world of growing cannabis. Not unless you are a company trying to sell your product by describing something magical, and better than it is.

Also bigger heatsinks don't automatically mean better quality. AdvancedLED has switched from using a massive single plate heatsink to many smaller ones.

LED lights do put off heat just like GoldGrower said. They usually are better at keeping heat off the plants from the lights directly, but the back/sides of that unit are going to be pumping out heat.

Buy loads of LEDs and tell us :) would be an awesome grow, 10,000 actual led watts on 1 plant.

  19. Agree, apart from the double the yield part. Bold statement, considering how many people are smashing their HPS gpw with their LEDs.

If you check out snoopdogs led HPS side by side a 650watt led is smashing the 1000watt HPS!
    Like double the growth.

Let me know if you want the link buddy.

    Morning all!

I've got enough led experience to recommend the following. If temp is an issue stick with the 3 watt led units. The 5 watt units run hotter. Not as hot as an HPS mind you.

EDIT autospeller turned HPS into HP's...
