I have the Alien movies on Blu Ray, but I have the 6 disc Anthology set.  Though I wish I'd waited, as I just recently noticed there's a 9 disc set with Prometheus included (not that I care about it, but for completion sake) in a swanky big box.  They look great on Blu Ray, though I still have never seen Resurrection.  I actually saw Alien 3 in the theater, sitting next to my mom, it was weird.  Especially if you know my mom, which you don't.  And I saw Alien whenever that was they re-released it to coincide with the Director's Cut DVD's, like '04 I think.  I personally don't care for the James Cameron cut of Aliens.  Some of the scenes add a little bit, but most of it is dead weight.  The stuff on the colony prior to the outbreak, Newt's parents getting attacked, etc.  It slows us down from getting to what we want to see: Colonial Marines fighting Xenomorphs.

  3. 1st one was great.

Really impressed how well this movie was done. Writing/directing/acting/music-score was excellent.
Can't say I remembered too much of it though. I believe I got into them around the 2nd or 3rd installment.

Crew mate 'Ash' is also Bilbo Baggins... silly hobbitsies!

It's a little more slow-moving than the other films, but it was supposed to be more suspenseful than scary or action-packed.  The plot itself actually started out as a comedic subplot in the John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon student film "Dark Star".  It originally wasn't part of the story, but O'Bannon wrote it when they needed to add extra footage to make it feature length for release.  It was just a goofy subplot about one of the crew chasing this funny alien around the ship, but he would expand on it and make it serious/scary, and write the script for Alien.

Of course it would take H.R. Giger to turn this...

George Lucas also noticed his computer effects from Dark Star and used him on Star Wars.  He also wrote/directed one of my other favorite movies, Return Of The Living Dead.  So Dan's an all-around badass.  As is John Carpenter.

  5. Youre die hard Alien fan huh man!? I never knew any of that.

What are some other good "alien" movies similar to these?

  6. Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan.  Mainly the first 2.  I wouldn't say it's my favorite series or anything, but pretty high up there.  And as I said, the movie sprouted out of the movie Dark Star that John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon made while at USC, and I'm a huge fan of those 2.  John Carpenter is probably my favorite director.  Assault On Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, Christine and They Live.  And of course O'Bannon went on to work on Star Wars, Alien, Return Of The Living Dead, Total Recall, Dead & Buried, and while I'm not a fan of it, Heavy Metal, which a lot of people like.

As for some other good Alien movies, I don't know what you've seen, but I'll assume you've seen nothing.  John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorite movies ever, and a very scary alien movie.  If you liked Alien, you'll love The Thing.  It's a little more intense though, and some insane special effects for the time.  They still hold up today.  Very creepy movie.  They Live is also pretty good, but it's a little less scary and is more action/adventure with a little comedy.  What about Predator, you've seen that?

I ordered the quad from the UK because it was released before the US. It's a great set.

I like the movies pretty much in the order they were released with Alien being my favorite and Resurrection the film I never want to speak about.

I'm pretty excited to hear that the next Alien installment will be by Neill Blomkamp.

I've been meaning to watch it ever since I bought the Blu Rays, but haven't gotten around to it.  I kind of liked Alien 3 when I first saw it, not as much as the first 2, but it didn't really leave me excited for the next installment.  I was 17 when Resurrection came out, and I thought about going to see it, but I remember seeing one of those HBO: First Look things about it, and thought it looked stupid.  Pretty much the moment I saw they had brought back Ripley I decided I was going to pass.  And over the past 18 years or so I've caught a few glimpses/scenes while flipping through the channels, and I've always decided just to keep it as a trilogy.  But now that I own it I feel like I kind of have to watch it.  Plus I took the time to watch Prometheus, which I thought was lame, so I might as well give Resurrection a shot. I was kind of the same way with the second Jurassic Park movie.  I didn't bother to go see it, heard it was dumb and it sounded dumb, so I never bothered to see it until I bought the trilogy on Blu Ray (I had seen the third on cable and it was alright), and I really liked it.  A little dumb, but a fun movie.

  9. Resurrection makes Prometheus look like a masterpiece. Of course, I didn't mind Prometheus. Definitely not as good as it should have been and a few plot holes, but it was enjoyable.
