Yearly physical, how important is it?

Discussion in 'Fitness, Health & Nutrition' started by guesswhat, Mar 1, 2015.

  1. When I go in to my doctors office it's usually for medication, general checkups. The last two times I was in there I asked if I could have a yearly physical done my next visit. Prior to this year it has been 2-3 years, which is when I switched from my last doctor.

Anyway I was told that no, I shouldn't get one done and they wouldn't schedule me one. I have had lots of bad experiences at this place since the beginning. I only switched because they are over an hour closer than my old doctor.

So how important is a yearly physical really?

  2. Depends on your age I guess. I get a "yearly" every couple of years. I mainly do it for the bloodwork.

  3. If you have insurance, you should. It's a good time to bring up any concerns you may have with your doctor, have a standard blood test, check your weight and renew any rx scripts you have.

  4. Yep I am insured and still pretty young? Although it's relative hah.

It just seemed strange to me and I thought maybe I was asking something taboo all of a sudden. I'll look for a new doctor, but also try and schedule one with my primary one more time. The insurance part is a good point and the blood work was mainly what I was interested in.

    Thanks guys!

  6. Typically yearly physicals are free. There's no reason not to other than laziness.
if you're young and healthy and you don't have any prominent risk factors in your family, it's probably not as important, but it's still not a bad idea.

I just give my friends yearly physicals for free weekly.

Ha! I may just have to become your friend.

  9. I think it's a pretty good idea.  There are plenty of things that it's good to keep an eye on yearly that may not have symptoms.  And your copay should be zero for a yearly physical, thanks to the affordable care act.  There's really no downside.

Bite your nails and get the whole fist up there just to be sure. ;)

  13. I go once a year, just to make sure my dick is alright and I'm disease free (not HIV, like cancer, etc.). It's also nice to see how I rank in my age percentile, especially after working out a lot and being in arguably the best shape of my life. It's one of those things ... better safe than sorry. If you have health insurance, why not do it?

  14. Insurance should cover a yearly physical, if not at least every other year. You might want to try a new doc, especially if you've had other issues as well.

You're probably not going to drop dead in a year or two without one, but it's certainly not a bad idea. A physical and basic blood and urine screens (not for drugs!) can potentially catch developing problems before they become more severe. Diabetes, hypertension, some cancers and autoimmune illnesses, renal issues, hernias (turn your head and cough :p), etc. But then again, some physicians are now advising against yearly physicals in people with no health problems, so who knows? Nevertheless, your health insurance should cover it, with little or no copay.
