I was close to ordering smart pots for this summer when it struck me that I wonder how you anchor ties to the pots. Can you anchor directly into fluffy soil?
I use heavy thread like upholstery thread and a large needle to basically stitch a loop through the edge where I want a tie. No sewing skills required; in, around the plant, out, tie the ends together as tight as you need.
you could also loop a line of whatever around the lower third of the smart pot and tie down to that no tools needed, just string
Used by aggressive LST'ers the grow world over http://www.lowes.com/pd_172729-388-90924_0__?productId=3017542&Ntt=velcro+straps&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNtt%3Dvelcro%2Bstraps&facetInfo= The 'hook' side of the Velcro will stick directly to a fabric pot. You can join them together for different lengths. Buy 2 packs as you will find a multitude of uses for these handy little ties.
I poke little holes at the rim of the pot where I need to put strings..very simple lol @IMgreen that's a really smart idea. I will use it, much quicker than my previous way.
The Indica I'm growing is short & bushy with little space between nodes. Not sure if a half inch strap will wrap around the stem. But if the hook side grips the pot tightly I guess I could make Velcro loops for string or wire
One way that works really well is to use jumbo paper clips with the straps I shared. Take a jumbo clip and do a half twist. Fit one loop thru the slot of the velcro strips, place the other loop around the branch. Pull down and fasten the hook side to the fabric pot. Volia!
I use a combination of Velcro and sprinkler steaks. Sprinkler steaks come in handy when really small. http://store.rainbird.com/product/detail/A50708B.aspx
Just cut the Velcro into thin strips dude, problem solved. Bham Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum
I besides the great idea I like your nice isolation shot & lighting. You think like a photog http://forum.grasscity.com/index.php?/topic/1357118-Scotty%27s-first-grow
This is what I use. The only problem I ran into last time was I had so many that it got kinda hard to water. This time I made a scrog net out of pvc and string. http://m.homedepot.com/p/45-ft-Plant-Tie-91384/202261952/ Solo
I start with binder clips and plastic coated gardening wire. Moveable, re-moveable, and easily adjustable. Sorry, not the best pic's... Then when the ladies start to put on weight, I change over to good ol' bamboo stakes and loosely attached gardening wire to secure the branches if need be...
Safety pins and gardening wire. I don't even close them. If you put the wire on the end that clasps together it makes a "hook" without closing it, that can easily be moved as needed
me too, I use the lower ring when they are small and the bigger one when they get bigger, works great. Also the squared wire fencing stuff works good too, just get a good pair of dykes to go through them and shape em to whatever you want, those also stick in the soil better too if you have a freshly transplanted plant. I leave a little "barb" on the wire to hold in the soil better. I've used a stapler and small gauge wire also. Easy with smart pots. Or I've also used just the green wire they sell in spools for plant ties and then take the plastic off the ends to poke them throught the smartpot fabric. You can do all kinds of stuff with smarties haven't done the Velcro yet, I like that one. Reminds me of my "experiment" I made a slice down the side of a couple 2 or 3 gallon (can't remember which) smartpots so I could transplant them easier. made a fancy Velcro strip down the side and everything. Mental note... smart pots are great for everything EXCEPT transplanting. That's why I go straight from my plastic ones to my 12/15 smarties
I've used binder clips and holes made with a hole punch. I prefer the hole punch. Binder clips are great at first but then quickly become a mess of wire and clips when it's time to transplant. The hole punch is more work up front but cleaner over all. The clips do and will get nasty and rusty. Then I use tomatoe cages when they are in flower. Would love some kind of portable cage/container setup, wouldn't be hard to setup, but i veg under T5's so the height becomes an issue if I'm using tomatoe cages in veg.
