What vape should I get?

Discussion in 'Vaporizers' started by Notorious13, Feb 18, 2015.

  1. I am fairly new to vaping, owned a Grenco science snoop dog g pen about 6 months ago and traded it for a much nicer piece.. Anyways, I am struggling to find or decide what vaporizer I should get, I like the hammer of the fact that it's butane and I don't need to charge it but im open to other recommendations. First of all I would like to keep the price under 200$. Second I would like it to be pretty potable. And third I would like to be able to charge it "discretely" this meaning I would either want it to be butane or the battery to come out so I can charge just the battery without the vape being visible if at all possible.. I love the arizer solo vaporizer but not the fact that I have to charge the entire unit. I also have been looking at the MFLB but the guy at my local headshop said the battery life is terrible. Forgot to mention earlier, I will only be vaping dry herb out of it.

  2. the Pax's price just dropped to 200, and IMO is the most portable and discreet vaporizer available.. I will probably be flamed by Iwien for this comment, but I've owned 3 and liked em all.

  3. What makes it more portable/discreet then other vaporizers that are half the size and produce less smell ?

I owned a pax for a while and I liked it, Not efficient enough for me personally so I sold it

  4. Anything specific you didn't particularly like?

  5. Yes, not effecient enough. It requires a .5 to pack the oven, which is definitely one of the main reasons why you go through so much bud with the pax.

Plus the batterys are internal, eventually batteries stop holding a charge and then your preety much screwed...

  6. really? Well I sure as hell wouldn't want my battery to go to shit haha. Anyone else have experiences like this?

Joyetech, I would never flame anyone for stating their opinion about any vape and that's exactly what you did, so no flaming from me but.......  ;)

  8. I was stopped illegally frisked and searched multiple times wall walking down by my LHS (funny right?) and had headphones wrapped around the pax.. officers thought nothing of it.

"Ok sir, sorry for the interruption"

--I filed a complaint to the department after the second time but see what I mean?
It's definitely no where near as efficient as other vaporizers in the same price range, but for $200 I like the idea of the pax. for $150 for me, it would be a no brainer.
For me the MFLB high just wasn't heavy enough for me and I used that in conjunction with 6 other types of vapes.. idk...I'm a weird one.

  9. what's your input on the pax if you don't mind me asking?

  10. Firefly
Best weed related purchase I have ever made.

Personally, I don't like it.   The reason why is that it is a conduction based vape without the ability to apply and remove the heat instantly.   What that means is, is that your bud is constantly being cooked as it's heating up, in between hits and as it's cooling down.   That creates more smell, more frequent cleaning and.............because your herbs are constantly being cooked, it is also a weed hog.

The form factor though is very stealthy but the increased smell definitely takes away from the stealth factor.

For me, I like heat-on-demand convection based vapes which the Pax is not.

Edit, btw, the FireFly that Jet posted above is the kind of vape that I like.   There are others that fill this description as well.

  12. Anyone have any experiences with the hammer? Looking at the firefly as well.

  13. Any opinions on the newer g pro vapes?

  14. Convection vs conduction vs hybrid vape heating systems.

The firefly is nice but keep the following in mind.
There are two types of vaporizers, conduction and convection. This firefly vape is a hybrid convection and conduction vaporizer that has a high grade alloy heating element underneath, but not directly touching the ceramic bowl. Convection works by vaporizing the herbs and running hot air through them, not making direct contact with a heat source. There are pros and cons to both. The pro is that your herbs are not being “cooked” AS MUCH when you are not inhaling. The bowl does get hot and retain a thermal mass, which will make your herbs warm. A lot of people think just because it is not glowing red anymore that it is not hot, well it is. The other downside is there is no way to measure the temperature of the hot air in the center of the herbs. Being that the firefly has no temperature control, other than what they refer to as “vapor surfing”, this provides you with a guessing game of what temperature you're at. If you need specific compounds that are released at certain temperatures, or if you want to experience different sterpines or flavanoids it is not possible with the firefly. It's all or nothing. I have yet to see or use a portable vape that is convection only. I think they're just too small to get the heat source far enough away from the holding chamber. My thought is both end up taking place the minute you inhale anyway. some portables however do lean one way or the other convection or more conduction. I consider them all hybrids and a temp control is a must for me. Good luck

  15.
Ummmm.............not quite sure that's accurate.    A member over at FC did an experiment with the FF by loading up the bowl and engaging the heater and left the heater engaged for as long as the battery would last and there was absolutely no cooking of the herbs whatsoever.

Its wastes bud, while being very stealthy.
Gets very dirty and not easy to clean. I'm selling mine for 100 so that tells you what I think of it.

Firefly conserves very well and extremely easy to clean.

  17. That's interesting if the test is accurate. That would also mean you could heat the unit for let's say 30 seconds about the length of a pull without actually puffing on it. Then place your finger in the chamber with no discomfort from heat. Thc has a low boiling point. A very accurate test would be to use a instantaneous heat reading gun the kind that uses a laser. To see if it retains any thermal signature and at what temperature in the empty chamber. I would also like to see results of a loaded chamber that had a few puffs taken off of it. Then emptied and chamber surface read with heat gun to see if it retains enough heat to continue cooking or causing the herb to produce vapor that would ultimately escape device that is not in use at the time and dissipate in the surrounding atmosphere. My hypothesis is a portable vape is hybrid regardless whether it leans more towards conduction or convection. Even if it's only heating incoming air on demand the chamber will retain a thermal image & temperature for quite some time. From hot air heating it. It will likely retain enough to reach thc boiling point and hold longer than we would like even with elements off. The only way to counter or stop this conduction heating affect asap would be to cool the chamber fast. Easily achieved by taking a few puffs with elements off. If it is more of a set and forget temp controlled conduction unit you can end your session simply by turning unit off thust deactivating elements and puffing to cool the chamber. The only portable unit I have seen so far that comes close to 100% convection is the solo. It has a removable glass stem that also contains the bowl. Removing the stem from the unit removes the bowl from the heat source that is the solo unit itself. The glass is too thick to retain enough heat to continue cooking the herb. Elements that close to a holding chamber for herb I classify hybrid. That's my thinking on it anyway seems logical but without proper testing just my opinion and hypotheses.

  18. A solo is a hybrid between convection/conduction, if you load a solo stem full, turn it on to 4 or above, and leave it, it will cook the herb. Glass is a thermal insulator, so thicker glass equals more insulation. Infrared temp guns don't like glass due to the refractive index of glass, you could use one, but you would have to change the settings quite a bit, and the distance from the object would have to be centimeters to be even somewhat accurate, as a infrared does not take into account air movement, it would be a waste of time.

I agree a solo is a hybrid did not mean to imply otherwise. In my opinion though it leans more toward convection than other portable vapes. Glass is a thermal insulator, so thicker glass equals more insulation for sure thats why I think they used it. The hole on top of solo unit you insert stem/bowl in is metal lined right would retain heat from element below? Glass can also focus light & generate heat from it in a focused beam. It will generate heat without retaining a vast majority of heat while doing this because of light passing through it. Keeping hot air or cold air on opposing sides of a room or window separated by glass is easy. I'm talking about single pane no gas fill window. Like the old single pane thick ones. When I said heat gun I meant one that has the proper beam angle to allow distance. It's true the most accurate way to measure glass surface temperature is a LumaSense thermal imaging cameras. Taken from here>http://www.lumasenseinc.com/uploads/News/Articles/English/Glass-Worldwide_Temperature-Sensing-Solutions_Jan-2012.pdf Why would you want to go throught all the trouble though its costly. My point is portable vaporizers have the heating element to close to the herb holding chamber to be considered mostly convection based. Even if the element is in the air passage only heating incoming air. As many units unlike the solo do not use a glass bowl or have a removable bowl/stem combo. Of course if you leave the solo stem/bowl combo in the unit with it on its going to cook herb. Heat/vapor rises. If you take a hit then remove it like you would with convection desktop whip style whip/glass bowl vape that you have to touch glass bowl to vape unit heating element glass output then drawn on. Most of them units are fan forced so it constantly blows out hot air at a set temp. Its essentially the same thing. Using a solo in this way would be a hassle though but could be done. Unlike other units without glass stem/bowl combo that leaves no ability to remove from hot air source or hot ceramic or steel chamber that hold herb. If you can't remove the bowl of herbs from its heat source its a hybrid conduction & convection vape in my opinion some do lean more one way or another its negligible tho. If yall want to masterdebate over muzzleloaders modern inline type or gun caliber. Feel free to join me over at I hate cva owners forums or 40 cal owns forums. Why because I own a thompson center inline lol. 40 cal is also the best because I own that cal to. Dodge trucks own. Fords are just a fix or repair daily. Also know as a fuckedover redone dodge. found on road dead many other names. I own a dodge so thats best also. I rote this so its better then your post by the way also lol. Only kidding with you but mines still better. :hippie: Now its even better because of this editing I have to do. (Wrote) not rote* bam!

  20. Stay away from any pen vape. There are like two pen vapes that actually work on the market.

I heard about the T-Vape and another one.

As for G Pro, Grenco Science, Titan .etc stay away. Most pen vapes combust dry herbs which defeats the purpose of vaporizers. If $200 is your limit you have a lot of options. The only vape I have used is the MFLB and I love it. Its very small and discreet. Its said to be the stealthiest portable vape on the market. The battery problem could be solved by buying more batteries. Fresh batteries work pretty good. Its when your battery gets old is when it starts to die quick.
You could even look into the PA adaptor.
