Scottys first grow

Discussion in 'Organic Grow Journals' started by Sativa Scotty, Feb 14, 2015.

  1. I'm already 40 days into my 1st attempt at growing and have received loads of advice and lots of support here. The following posts & photos will catch you up to today

Like all rookies I've had problems with seedlings but a little practice and lots of reading here, hopefully I will have a successful grow. Now that I'm past staring at sick little seedlings wondering "what the hell?", I'll start a journal

My goal is to grow 1 Aurora Indica indoors in true organic soil & hopefully harvest a little. With this knowledge I'll do a "serious" backyard grow of three 7 gallon plants this summer (2015). This will be "mostly" pain/sleep med for my wife & since she got a MM card in CA she gave me the green light to grow!!

    Strain-Aurora Indica feminized from Nirvana

Soil- 1/3 each of peat, perlite, & compost
compost is 50/50 ewc & BU blend

    Additions per cubic ft
    3 cups Espoma plant tone
    1 cup kelp meal
    1 cup garden lime
    4 cups basalt rock dust

    Lights. 6400 lumen in 23watt cfl 6500k
Additional 3200 lumen will be added

Setting the peat seedling in a mix of 1/3 each of ewc, peat & perlite was a mistake.
A couple of days after watering it hardened to concrete!

Two days later this happens! As expected I got the suggestion that it's a ph problem. I knew that couldn't be the case because I used an organic mix that had cycled for a few weeks. Others said infection but just the bottom leaves? No.

For a couple days before onset of this problem, I set the cup outside before dawn to get some free sun. Predawn temps were upper 40s and a GC expert said he'd seen this with big temp swings. Saying that this can shock the plant and cause nutrient lockout. Probably right and lessened learned. Eventually those leaves withered & died

The leaves above the spotted leaves now start yellowing! I'm not over watering, in fact I hadn't watered since TP. I took the advice not to worry because the top growth is healthy

It was a stressful period raising my first seedling, but thanks to the helpful people here she appears to be thriving.

  8. that's a good candidate to wrap around the main growing cola in a "u" shape, you can have more growing tips that way, in a smaller footprint. An easy method for that is to buy a standard tomato trellis, and cut the top portion off and just use the lower "ring"... If ya follow me..
    how big is that container?
And i'd reaaally urge you to go for a 400w hps in that area...
four feet is enough for a HID, especially with good ventilation, which you have. A LOT better penetration (ok, your turn for the joke).
What i'd do personally... is cram the biggest smartpot you can fit in there, and put multiple plants in the same pot and train them all to have "six pack" colas, you could probably get four plants in there, or two BIG ones.

  9. It's a 3gal pot. I don't know how much heat an hid light gives off. Thought the box is lined with Mylar panels it is still cardboard!

Is 400w overkill for a 2x2 box? I can see why indoor growers graduate to hid after using cfl. Including lights this cost about $50 and took 2 hours to build. If I continue to closet grow I'll definitely move on up.

I think you're saying to train the main stem around the lower ring? I'd like to see a picture of that. It's just a 3 gal pot and I don't want to TP again. Though it looks healthy, she's growing very slowly probably from being TP'd 4 times!

I will definitely try something like that the next time in a larger pot

  11. I can get ya a picture when I get home.
    But yeah.
And whyya transplanting so much buddy?
Typically if you get good at it transplanting won't slow them down at all.

Thanks! Actually I can't judge if she's growing slow or fast since I've never grown before. Just seems slow. Does that seem small to you after 45 days?

One TP was because the solo cup mix was too much EWC and turned to concrete! The other TP should've gone directly into the final 3gal pot. It's a learning curve. I'll apply that to my "serious" summer grow.

Now I have a few gnats even though I haven't watered in 6 days, but I'm gonna stop that in its tracks with BT.

  13. Subbed. I love the wardrobe grow boxes used them more then once myself! Double wall cardboard rox imo!

  14. Hey man lookin good subbed up;)

  15. Nice work! Love your box! 400w in that little box would be too much without finding a way to install an air conditioner in there as well, lol. I have 4 sq. ft. with 6 ft. of height to work with and its all i can do to keep 300w (400w ballast on 75% setting) from getting too hot. Air temperature is one thing, but the radiant heat that comes of the the bulb is difficult to control. On top of that its difficult to fit an air cooled reflector inside such a small space. An LED would might work in that box. Or, if you get hell bent on using HID, maybe this:http://www.roguehydro.com/sunleaves-micro-sun-250w-hydro-lights/?ref=lexity&_vs=google&_vm=productsearch&gclid=CL3ryojMjMQCFQqFaQod2QoApA

    Keep on keepin on! Subbed!
