When can I top?

  1. When can I top these babies? I transplanted from clones 5 days ago, they are just starting to show growth and seem to be recovered from transplant shock and doing well. Chemdawg '91, Stardawg and Jack Herrer. Most of them have at least 3 or 4 nodes. I want to top them as soon as possible because I have limited ceiling space in my room and I want them to get nice and bushy and do a SCROG.

Is it too early to top them? Should I wait a few more days? Experienced growers please help!

    Thanks guys!

  2. hey again :D  I liked testing stuff as I was learning, not too long ago.  something I tried instead of topping was another method of low stress training.  Try simply tying the top over to one side.  this way the "highest" point is where the new growth will come out, then in a week u let it go and there u now have a big Y shape.  then u can split them and then another will grow to reach that height, then let that tie go and u have 3 tops, all the same height!.  you will need to do this on a much smaller scale I think and also flower much sooner because they will at least double.
I would do this.  with a few, simply tie a rope around the base for support.  then  tie on top and tape or tie the other end to the pot. so that its bent over (without stressing or uprooting)  so then the plant will go the path of least resistance UP through another top.  good luck and good stuff.

  3. As long as your clones are showing some new growth that means theyre alive and kicking! 3 - 4 nodes up just remove the top and it will branch off double!

Greenthumbs method is really nice and works amazing for a low stress train (LST).

Right now for my first grow i'm actually doing a combination of both! i've been topping my plants and constantly tying down the branches that reach to the top of my plant so i can get more grow on the newer tops and have a more bushy plant instead of a taller plant.

Like i said this is my first grow so i am also experimenting. I've topped some of my plants, some of the others i have just done LST, and some of the others im letting go naturally to see the difference in yields.

Correct me if im wrong but from the research i've been doing ive learned that the plants grow best with no stress at all, this could be topping, nute burn, heat damage, anything! So if you LST them properly you can get a really nice bushy healthy plant!

  4. This is NOT my post but i have copied it over here just to help you out mate.

    You can LST or SCROG.
\nLST is bending the branches and tying them down to help assist an even canopy for equal light penetration. Bending them also releases Auxins which will trick other branches into thinking theyre the main cola your plant will be low and bushy. My first grow was LST and i drilled a series of holes around my 5 gal bucket and would use those to tie the branches down.
\nHers a couple pictures i ripped from the internet at random.

\nSCROG is essentially the same thing except you put a screen above your medium around 8 inches. Everyday or two you tuck all growth under the screen filling it to 70-80% full before switching to flower.
\nHerea a link to my current grow, pictures everyweek. Its a 2 plant SCROG.

\nAnd heres an example of what not to do with a SCROG

\nNot a bad grow but it isnt a SCROG. In this case the screen is simply acting as a support for the buds,if they were to become top heavy.

  5. Thanks, wyx...! Yes, good info indeed!

Thanks again for the info! Very useful

  6. Last year I topped and scrogged.

This year no top, just scrog. Much happier with this year's grow.

  7. On the fifth set.

You can top as soon as you have a few nodes, I do it as soon as I can get the scissors between the old one and the new one. If you got limited space you'll probably need to tie them down regardless though.

Atm I top 2-3 times then start tying them down to start on the canopy. Whatever works for you.

  9. after the fifth set cut every third set
