Bipolars I want your story....

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by jfunke, Feb 12, 2015.

  1. If you have bipolar, I would love to know your story and how it has interacted with cannabis.  Contact me here, and we'll go from there.  This of course is confidential, but also bliend.   I don't need your name, just age / sex and story.

    Cheers

Hey so I'm 18 and I have borderline and/or rapid cycling bipolar. I'm female by the way.

I also have insomnia which is mostly why I smoke. I've always quickly built up a tolerance to prescription pills and they stop working for me.

As far as how it helps for my borderline/bipolar, I wouldn't put it on a pedestal as a magic cure-all medicine like some people do but I think it has it's benefits.

If I'm freaking out or having a panic attack, smoking instantly helps calm me down! But if I'm consistently depressed for a long period of time, then getting high just seems to make me feel worse in the long run. The come down always makes me feel more depressed.

If I'm having a manic episode, I'll stay up all night. Sometimes it's a great time to get things done, but when I need to sleep, I just can't do it - which is when I definitely need to smoke.

  3. Wuddup, glad to see that this was the top topic at the moment.

I'm a 24 yr old male, and I have had bipolar since I went through puberty. I have been on a bunch of different prescriptions to try and make the bipolar tolerable, but nothing has really worked, and some of the drugs had HORRIBLE withdrawal effects.

Like etherreall, I have rapid cycling. What marijuana does is 1) slow the cycle down considerably and 2) makes the peaks and drops similar to that of what I assume a normal person feels.

Also, weed has given me more motivation to get things done and to improve upon different aspects of my life. The only downside to it that I can tell is that since I'm in an illegal state, I have no way of requesting certain strains that I have read about, so it is hard to tell how much is enough.

Also munchies are killer.... But I usually have enough self-control to help that.

  4. I am 36 and was officially diagnosed with Bipolar I in 2007. I have been smoking for 5 years. I smoke an eighth a week. It has helped my bipolar tremendously in conjunction with my other meds. I have tried quitting before, but have issues with increasing anxiety. Unfortunately, it is illegal and bipolar and generalized anxiety disorder are not qualifying conditions in my state. I stand by the healing properties of marijuana; they have certainly helped in my case.

  5. 25. Bipolar. Just started smoking everyday about a week ago. I've never felt better. The reason weed is good for bipolar prior is because it allows you to get out of your own way and actually be normal. I'm still learning about it, but I'll talk to anyone about it anytime if they wanna pm. I'm doing dro right now. If someone knows a better strain than dro for bipolar please let me know.

  6. I am a 56 year old bi polar female.  I have no doubt that marijuana is a godsend for people like me.  I have been self medicating for years with weed and it is the only thing that actually makes me normal..slows my rapid thoughts..gets me to a stable place.  I have been on multiple medications in the past which, as all bi polars do, go off of them because "there's nothing wrong with me."  I can definately say that I can go without my pharmaceuticals but NOT my medical marijuana.

I'm a 19 year old male and I use medical marijuana for Bipolar disorder type 1 as an adjunct with mood stabilizers that I take. It calms me down, I sometimes get a little anxiety when I'm high. My psychiatrist warns me that I'll get psychosis if I keep smoking weed. But I don't see any evidence for that. I do get manic and depressed sometimes when I'm sober.

  8. Im 31yo female with bipolar. Marijuana is the only thing that helps. I spend most of my time anxious and panicky esp at work. I've been on pharmaceuticals on and off for over a decade and been self medicating longer than that. Right now im working on fine tuning my treatment with strains that are geared towards anxiety and depression.

  9. 38yo male checking in. Been prescribed several mood stabilizers over the last decade and were of no use to me (side effects too much to handle or turned me into a emotionless robot). Over the last 15 months or so, I have had great success with a low dose of Prozac and about 1.5g a day of good medical. Keeps me from a lot of bad decisions and irrational trains of thought I was subject to before. Haven't felt this level since high school.

I have been very close to two people diagnosed with bipolar disorder in life and no offense to the others on here, but they annoyed the shit out of me and are extremely hard to deal with.

  11. 38 yr old female bipolar. I started using marijuana about 10 months ago just to try it and found I liked it so much I do it daily. I also happen to work at an inpatient psychiatric ward. Please don't stop taking your meds! I don't believe in cannabis psychosis, but I HAVE to take my meds, and smoking just helps with what the meds can't control all the way. I'm bi polar so my brain chemistry is messed up so I need the medications, marijuana can't cure my faulty brain chemistry, but it does help me deal with medication side effects better and helps me sleep at night. I think it's a god send to people with anxiety or bipolar or depression, but I think you also have to listen to your doctors and take medication as prescribed.
