Why is the United States still a country? What do Americans even have in common?

  1. The United States is like one of those couples that are obviously heading for divorce, absolutely hate each other, have nothing in common but stays married out of habit. Americans used to have two things in common, our love of liberty (the constitution) and a common language, English. Despite all the various backgrounds our immigrant ancestors came from whether it be England, France, Ireland, China, Russia people wanted to be free and we all learned English so that we could communicate and do business with each other. The liberty principle is gone, people are willing to trade their liberty for the promise of safety whether it be physical safety or economic safety. English will probably not be the common language for long, I live in Texas, one of the border states and so many people don't speak English that it can be a challenge to find a job unless you are bilingual.  As we all know liberals and conservatives have polarized and pretty much hate each other. Liberals think conservatives are the Christian Taliban and Conservatives think liberals are a bunch of communist sympathizers. So why are we still together, what unites us anymore? Wouldn't it be better if we had an amicable divorce while we still can before our verbal battles become physical battles? The Constitution provides for a live and let live philosophy of states rights allowing us to experiment and mold the state we live in to better fit our beliefs but the states are now under the iron fisted control of a federal government that enforces the will of whatever political party happens to be in office.

  2. I agree: give Texas back to Mexico! ;)

  3. it's always been a divided country at heart, just now the historically silenced are allowed to speak in whatever fucking language they choose and about whatever issues that matter to them.

    seems fair to me.

  4. I'd feel much better if texas and florida both seceded.

  5. I think you have a point but for a minute there race relations appeared to be improving.  People have always been allowed to speak whatever language they choose but now the rest of us are expected to learn that language so the non English speakers won't be disadvantaged.

    I bet they would too.

I feel like a state/country where almost everyone agrees on almost everything could be worse. Like a country with a dictator. Entirely different set up with a lot of the same results.

So, how do you mean this? Like the nation breaks up and every state goes their own way, some maybe joining or splitting further; or that we should go back to what America was at first, a loosely united clusterfuck of different rules and currency?

It's not like everyone can just uproot their life, or should have to, but that would be necessary for millions of people if they wanted to live in a state with their ideal conditions. That is, unless you're ok with a bunch of people being stuck in a "new" state with new rules that don't work for them.

What if some more popular states happen to be the smaller ones. They get more people, shouldn't they get more land or resources? How to they work that out? Or are we re-drawing borders from the start? How do they know how many people would want what; how many new states? Take some polls?

What do we do when the Canadiens invade?

It wouldn't be impossible but I'm sure it would make things way more complicated at this point

nobody asked you to learn any of the languages so others wouldn't feel disadvantaged. Lol if you did how would we all be conning you and making fun of you while your standing there infront of us without offending you. The natives used to do this to you that's why you guys forced them to go to school where they weren't allowed to speak their language. It's really fun having a language between you and your friends and family that you can speak when cops or white people are around. Please don't bother trying to learn another language.

  9. lol don't worry we won't invade hahaha, but you got to watch out for the British or Europeans they have a nasty habit of stealing land and a while later pretending they never did anything wrong and acting like they are the rightful owners of that land.

  10. Give up.

We kicked your ass before, we'll do it again.

  11. I think the United States was intended to be like what the United Nations is now, a collective of countries that were allied. This is just my opinion, but from what I know, I think the US is the only country to use "state" in the way we do. Most of the time, the word "state" is synonymous with "country".

  12. I like having all the land. Makes us look tough to Russia and China. Westward expansion muhfuckas.

  13. I didn't say anyone has asked me to learn a different language, they only ask me to pay for their interpreters so they could communicate.  I don't remember you standing in front of me being rude but some kids down the block tried that.  I also don't remember forcing anyone to go to school or stealing anyone's land.  Are you sure that wasn't someone else?

Yeah our country is stuck in a stalemate.

If we take the country too far to the left or right half the population is going to be pissed.

If we stay in the middle both sides will be pissed.

The best thing to do is let right wingers form their own country and liberals form theirs.

Make the east coast moderate, the south can be conservative, the mid-west a neutral zone and the west can be Liberal.

My only fear is that one nation becomes a fascist nightmare and it will become a North Korea/South Korea situation.

  15. lol the gun nuts in the right wing will bomb the liberals and take over their country. I bet the liberal side would be a really fun place to be though.

  16. Yes because people commuting mass exodus based on political views, they often know very little about sounds totally rational and like something that would definitely not cause any major issues.

  17. Somethings gotta give.

Moderates can't keep everyone happy forever.

  18. You don't need moderates. People just need to learn civility and how to talk to/about another political organization without becoming hostile. I'm sick of seeing this rhetorical copout of oh something's gotta give. That does not validate the need or belief that two separate unions will/should form that consist of conservatives and liberals. No one 100 percent identifies by either of those labels and if they do they are most likely not the smartest. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm singling you out, but I see this comment all the time in this forum and it kind of pisses me off how nonchalantly people suggest it as a reasonable expectation of the future. Anyone who thinks a modem day civil war/separation of the union that will result in two separate conservative/liberal states is entirely too paranoid and seriously needs to calm the fuck down. I'm sure people were saying the same shit way back in the day and we're still here today.
