First time micro grow

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by KBD86, Feb 8, 2015.

  1. So I'm doing my first grow from bag seeds. I have 9 plants under 2 6500k cfls in my 2 ft x 2 1/2 ft x 3.5 ft it's all odd shaped but is sealed with passive intake and 6 inch active exhaust. Staying at 78 degrees and high 20's to 30's RH. A couple of the plants have dead ends on the leaves I water every 3ish days or until feels lite. They are 3 weeks and I'm not feeding any nutes getting a ph pen soon so I can ph my water, I have well water apposed to city. The three below seem to be doing good they but the left top has the dead end on the leaf. The rest are relatively small but doing ok. I'd like to keep them in solo cups if anyone has any tips.

  2. Whats your soil? Looks really woody to me or is that just mulch. Its 2 things water or soil. Check em and get back to us.

  3. It's more like a mix of a organic compost I make and a bagged potting soil with perlite 60% compost 40% bagged soil. The wood you see is what I added to the cup after it sprouted it was the bagged soil.

  4. Heres a pic of them today

  5. They look pretty tiny for 3 weeks old, how close to the light you keeping them?

  6. 8-10 inches

  7. Depending on lights, i'd say max 5 inches away.

  8. They are now setting on DVD cases at 5 inches aways from the lights

  9. I would def look into getting a ph pen, I got mine on amazon for 10 bucks, best investment iv made so far lol but proper ph has a lot to do with growth ( from what I understand )

Yes pH is very important because once you reach the danger zones you start to lock-out nutrients and the plant is unable to absorb them. Just a pro-tip, if this happens, cut out all nutrients and feed only plain pH adjusted water (adjusted to correct your pH inbalance) to avoid building up nutrients in your medium. Once the pH is back to normal and the plant shows healthy again, you can continue normal feeding.

I agree with splat, they look quite small for 3 weeks. What are the specs on your CFL's? (wattage, equivalent wattage, and lumen output?) Generally 23W CFL's are safe 1" away from the leaves.

    Good luck!

  14. I've checked my ph with a Milwaukee ph51 after calibrating it. My current tap water ph is 6.5 on the dot. should I reduce this?

Test your runoff water to see what the pH is after it runs through your medium. This way you can see what the pH level of the water is in combination with your medium's components. You can use a syringe or something like that to suck up the runoff water and transfer it to a small container, like a clean medicine bottle so you can submerge the reader on the pH meter.

Generally (in soil), a pH of 6.5 is ideal as, from my research, this is a level that provides maximum nutrient availability. Others may argue that a lower pH (5.5-6.0) worked better for them, but it all depends on the amount of nutrients available in the soil. Personally, I would keep it around 6.5 . Take a look at the chart here: http://forum.grasscity.com/advanced-growing-techniques/79988-chart-thread.html

This is also a very good read on pH, but much like the lord of the rings, you might need a supply of fluids and snacks :p

Also remember that once you start adding nutrients, it will alter your pH level. So measure again, and add any pH up/down to your water as needed to stabilize your pH.

  16. I'll definitely check the PH on the run off and look through the charts I'll get back with the ph of the run off.

  17. I've checked my Run off waters PH and it is at 6.4. Take a look at the lower fan leaves on the one. They look burnt but the cfl is about 2 inches away and the hand test is fine. What do you guys think it could be?

  18. If you are giving nutrients, stop it, if not, keep giving plain water.
6.4 for runoff water is nice. Does she get enough water? It looks like the top soil layer is very dry.
Maybe move your CFLs a bit more further away, like 4 inch between the plant and the CFL.
I didn't read something about your temps?

  19. I water every 3ish days or the 2 knuckle test. And my temp is 79 with 25-30% RH and I'm not giving any nutes just tap water I will move my cfls to 4 or so inches.

  20. This one is starting it too
