Genetically Modified Marijuana?

Discussion in 'Marijuana News' started by LegalizeMarinara, Feb 3, 2015.

  1. According to this short article, there is a possibility of genetically modified marijuana coming to the US.

George Soros, a large investor in Monsanto, has also invested his money into the legalization of marijuana (supposedly). Could this mean genetically modified marijuana, THC, and CBD going into the big pharma companies? What are your opinions?

Personally, I don't think this will happen, mainly for one reason. I believe it's the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988. By United Nations standards, marijuana is still a schedule 1 drug (Narcotic). Even if we were to reschedule marijuana, we would be in direct violation of international law and treaties. Plus the United Nations is a HUGE part of the US in terms of relations with other countries, including our international commerce.

Where do you stand with this topic? For all I know this article is junk and completely false. I snagged it off of a conspiracy theorist friend's FB. Regardless, I think it's an important issue to discuss.

  2. Sounds interesting, not in a good way, but also not in a bad way..

  3. It's going to be a sad day but I can see that strains will be patented by these corporate entities soon enough.

  4. I hear ya on the UN thing but never underestimate the power of the corp world.....

  5. the GMO corp giants will take the essence of a living thing and completely destroy its soul value leaving just a husk of a shape brimming with lab/man made compounds and artificial vibes. humans' interaction with that shit is going to be lacking and not fully recognizable as a complete living thing. Frankenstein in plant form or the beginnings of artificial life that is supposed to be medicine

  6. And this whole lets get it down to schedule 2 is just putting it right into thier hands.

  7. I don't know why people lose their minds over GMOs so much...

yep, looking back we are going to be like- shit! why did we not just leave it as being illegal and underground out of soul destroying corporations' hands. the good comes with the bad but we will have a very short window of good before the cannabis is swamped with corporate greed and it starts to infiltrate all cannabis everywhere until the only cannabis left is ( GMO someone got rich destroying the soul of the plant cannabis and now owns patents on every seed sprouted). by then people will be mostly robotic anyway with half mechanical parts with the heart being the fist thing to go [IMG]

  9. I don't freak out about GMO's. We've already seen that GMO's have the potential to do some great things. Think of all of the positive benefits of GMO Cannabis. What if somebody were to genetically modify a strain to resist spider mites, for instance? It's not all or nothing. I think a lot of people dislike GMO's because they dislike Monsanto. Montsanto isn't the sole GMO provider.

  10. The idea of tinkering with nature just doesnt seem right. weve lived on this planet for a long time and the worlds done fine by itself. How things are, are the way they are supposed to remain.

  11. yeah, we eliminate the spider mite problem only to make extinct the unknown critter/creature who in the background is effected by the spider mite gene spliced eliminator ( round up most likely) . that seems to be the way with the one way gmo phenomena- focus on gene splicing to eliminate one species while annihilating other species in the process unbeknownst. years later people are trying to figure out why the ( blank) species population is dwindling in the areas the gmo spliced plants are raised. the gmo corps have great lawyers to keep them from being identified and who the hell has test equipment to prove them otherwise?

  12. That's a false dichotomy. Because it's a GMO does not mean that it's dangerous by default. It might be and it might not. That's why we need thorough testing just like anything else. There are many GMO's in existence that do no damage. I think this is a situation in which people are driven by fear. You are also creating hypothetical scenarios and asserting them as fact.

Here is an example of the GMO debate in a nutshell. I know a bunch of organic farmers in my area. There is a wheat or something, I can't remember, and it was genetically modified using a common fungus that is already in the soil that the wheat grows in. The fungus repels certain insects, so the wheat is immune to the effects of the insect. They are scared to death of this. However, when it comes to using "organic pest control" they use a pest control that is made of... you guessed it. The exact same fungus. This is because they are scared and the don't know. Because of that the Appeal to Nature like you do and think that if we make it, it must be bad, but if it's natural then it must be safe.

we do not know how to make anything. until you can pop a physical object into existence from nothing( thin air/vacuum)  you know nothing and are a detriment to nature and all nature is. we are trying to build/splice into something from something that is already in existence (created) which we had no part in.

please answer this, how do we go back after splicing genes into a living object that then perpetuates that splice into its very existence from there forth. it is like a women being raped and not wanting the offspring but nature just spits it out no matter not caring that the kid is a rape victim.

how do we go back from that?  once nature takes our genetics and runs with it there is no turning back.......

edit- and we have no other sources to turn to because we are the first at doing the splice thing so it is a big ass experiment at this point and we will no nothing of our outcomes until it is to late to do something about it

edit again-  I was learning of the craziness of gmo back in the late 90's with the moths dying off unexpectedly after putting gmo crops in fields.
also our modern man take on nature is it is the enemy and we must splice in genes to control our enemy and get similar reproducible results every time going against all nature stands for in diversity in life forms.

  14. See. I told you. The Appeal to Fear!

  15. As a side note, I live in wheat country where some 80%+ is exported to Asia.  A couple of years ago, some GMO wheat was discovered in a crop (just a mile or so from my house) and it became an international incident since Japan bans the import of GMO products.  The buyers stopped importing the wheat until our farming community could certify that no GMO wheat would show up again.  This was a big deal out here since that's a major economic player in our rural county.  There was a big investigation and as it turns out, there was no GMO wheat authorized by the FDA (at that time at least).  I didn't look into this much but I'm guessing it was the result of contamination from a test plot.

  16. fear and caution to the uninformed is a big difference. knowing we know nothing and encouraging us to experiment with gullible nature is a way to extinction and wondering where did the diversity go

  17. the big ass americans running the nature around them in a political way. we can control this we can control that all is up for control, where is the splice kit go splice that shit!

  18. Dude, are you drunk?

Anyway, change starts with you.  Bitchin about it online won't do anything.  Supporting local, organic, non GMO products may not seem like a big change but change happens slowly and takes a large group of people.  Hell, if it's that big of a deal to you, buy no ethanol super unleaded gasoline.  Put your money where your mouth is.

  19.
"I didn't look into this much, but I'm guessing it was the result of contamination from a test plot." If you don't know what it is, you can't really assert what it is can you? Furthermore, when I investigate, it appears that Japan does import GMO foods.

  20. The appeal to fear is false, no matter how you want to frame it. Instead of presenting evidence that something is dangerous, you speak about all of the scary stuff that could happen. That's a false argument. Furthermore, I think that you are framing your argument the wrong way. All it takes is one GMO to prove that not all GMO's are bad. There are already many examples of that. Therefore, instead of saying GMOs are bad because you are scared of what will happen, your argument should be, "We need strict testing and evaluation standards on GMOs."
