New to handcrafting fine wooden pipes

Discussion in 'Smoking Pipes, Glass Spoon Pipes' started by boardbros, Jan 30, 2015.

  1. Hello everyone, I've perused these boards every now and then but just recently created an account so I can get y'alls feedback. I have an interest in fine woodworking and its something I've been doing for 12+ years -- most of it was making gunstocks out of black walnut but also some furniture/furniture design. Anyways after using glass for a while and looking into wood pipes and seeing that almost nobody is making wood pipes for marijuana use, I decided I needed to give it a shot.

Luckily through my father I have access to some of the finest black walnut, stuff reserved for high end gun blanks, so I turned my first piece out of a mere "scrap." It turned out better than I thought so after staring at it a while and the encouragement of friends I decided I needed to start selling these. I've made about 7 pipes so far, trying to get some styles down..

The pipe that appears the most is the first one I made.. After that I laminated fiddleback maple and walnut together and it turned out great. They all have a carb on the end -- if pipe gets clogged just run a pipe cleaner all the way through. Won't get dirty and gross like glass, super easy to clean, will never break.

The last photo with the 5 pipes is what I plan to start making.. the three similar ones are (from L to R): maple, maple/walnut, walnut.. then a chillum and a duck call pipe "Quack pipe" haha

I'd love to hear your feedback!

  2. Thank you, ICGreen. I checked out his stuff, very cool indeed. If anybody has links or knows of anybody else doing woodwork, such as pipes, bongs, etc., I'd love to check it out.

I have a pretty cool idea for a "Super Bowl" that I plan to make before the game. I'll post pics once I finish to see what you guys think. That's only two days from now so it'll be a busy weekend!

  3. Those are cool as fuck man

  4. Looks awesome. Any concern because of woodglue?

  5. Thank you both. That's a good question.. I think the only part of the pipe where heat could be a concern is the bowl itself. On the pipe that's glued together I made it so the bowl is only in the walnut part. Either torching the bowl a bit or resin build up will protect the wood or anything else from burning, but the only part that would have any glue exposed to heat is the chamber connecting the two holes.. I'm 99% sure that just smoke passing through there isn't enough heat to affect it. I was originally going to make the pipe two pieces and hollow out a chamber in the body to make a helix pipe but it hits so cool as it is that it wasn't worth the time/effort (on the first few at least :smoking:)

  6. That's some good looking work man. I always did like turning wood.

  7. A duck call pipe is a game changer, good work.

  8. Awesome work!

    That's what she said

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. I've been away for a while working on getting my woodshop set up in my garage as well working on a website. I'd like you guys to take a look at it and tell me what you think. I'm not worried about making sales from here but would love the feedback! I'm currently exploring ways to market my products and how to get into local craft shows.

As I mentioned before, one of my projects was a wooden football smoking device called the Super Bowl. Me and a buddy made the prototype the day before the game.. and it turned out much better than I thought it would (functionally). It hits harder and cooler than all other pieces I've made! The last photo is the first one we made. I've made some refinements since then!

  11. Thanks man!

  12. Your wood pipes look sick. Never seen anything like that before... Well except for tobacco pipes bit they're different.

wow man. i gotta say that looks, like, REALLY good. It's nice to see something handmade that's actually nice, instead of the nube ass Gatorade bottle percolator shit. lol

i like the two colored ones you're thinking about. Seems like a lot of creative potential if you were to glue lots of different woods together. maybe layers of different woods glue em together and spinnnn. could even make a chamber that way. cool hobby

  15. Considered selling on a site? Those are fucking awesome.....esp the glued one
