Transplant strains vs just plant strains

  1. Hey GC!

I was looking to see if anyone has experience with strains that do better starting in small pots vs starting in there final pots.

I've grown a lot of autos, and know it's better to start them straight into 5 gal pots.

I've also started strawberry banana kush straight into a 5.6 gal air pot. They all do well.

For my next grow I'll be doing more photo period plants and wondering if I take clones from the strawberry banana kush, plant those in 1/2 gal then move to larger pots as the plant grows, will it be better or worse then just putting them into large pots to begin with?

Some normal plants auctualy do better if they are started small and transplanted throughout the grow, anyone seen strains that do better being transplanted? Or anyone know of strains that do better staring in a large pot and not moving? If so maybe we could start a list of plants to transplant and plants to plant straight into there final pots.

Thanks for the help guys and gals!

  2. You are correct, for photoperiod strains they will do better by transplanting a couple times, because the roots can reach out the the edges easier. Then moving them to another bigger container causes them to root even more. HTH?

  3. I always let my plants completely fill a keg cup with roots before I transplant to their final resting place. Once you establish an abundant but small root system there's no need to keep transplanting over and over. Let the roots hit a 20 gallon pot and they absolutely explode. In the end whatever works best for your style. Why not try put both ways and see how you like it. Half the fun of growing is experimentation and finding out who's info is BS and who's is not.

    Bham

  4. Is this real? Just fucking grow your plant kid. All plants will handle better pot handling skills with greater results. You're not using your head when you're stoned. This is an attempt to generalize proper handling of potting into cannabis care and it's completely unrelated. Pick up a book on potting or start doing your own science experiments with YOUR strains. Everything can be learned by proper experience and a scientific approach.

  5. First off I don't smoke, second I'm not concerned if you use different potting skills.

I'm asking about strain specific questions. Weather anyone has tried transplanting one strain verses planting the same seed in a 10 gallon pot and growing it.

Currently I'm growing straight into a 5.6 gallon air pot, and will try transplanting the same strain on the next grow.

I'm also not a kid. I'm an adult and quite positive you don't have to be rude on a form big guy. Thanks for the complete waste of a post in a "community" forum. Thanks for dropping knowledge.

  6. Im doing an experiment just like this right now.

2 NL autos. 1 in final pot, one in party cup. So far, both growing great. Party cup one growing a tad slower.

  7. Hey thanks man let us know how it turns out.

I personally never start in a cup or w.e, I just start right in the final pot. Even in 10 gallons.
People say they like to let the roots fill out but I really don't think it does anything.
When u start in the final pot the tap root goes straight to the bottom and builds a killer root system right off the bat. Ime ur plant will grow much bigger faster cuz it has all that room, if u look at people's plants that start in small pots they will never get much wider than the pot they are in but ones started in a big container tend to grow much fuller and beefier, it's definitely more about the width.
Just realize when u water u don't need to wet all the soil for a while just around the plant its self.
And if ur using an organic soil that u think might be too hot for a seedling than u can dig a little spot in the middle and put a milder soil in there.
If anything U could use rock wool cubes or those little jiffy things just to get it started with pretty much the same results. And if ur doing clones then u would want to start that way.
But I have heard of people doing clones by digging a little spot like I described above and putting just perlite or peat or even sand I think I've seen (don't quote me on that one tho lol)

  9. I hear us man thanks for the response.

I threw a few clones into 1 gallon pots and there all messed up now. Every other plant I've gone straight into there final pots and have great success so far.

Im about to try the jump from 5 gallons up to 7 and possibly 10 on a few autos.

I'm still 50-50 on it because 10 gallons is a lot for a plant that is only going to be in it for 55 days or so.

Ya I'd only go 5 tops on the autos, I use 3 gallon smart pots for smaller plants and they work really well. The roots develop better in them and I think they grow bigger plants than
    Regular pots.

But I've used a 10 gallon for a east coast sour diesel under a 400 watt hps and the thing was huge. I also vegged for over 2 months.
Back then I was a noob and fucked a lot of shit up and still got 6 zips off that plant.

Which is why I always stand by the old more roots = bigger fruits

You do realize that a properly amended organic soil should never burn anything, right? If it does, you've done something wrong.

Also, OP, you definitely want to "pot up". Go from solo cup to .5 gallon, then to 2 gallon, then to final pot. This will allow it to build a nice thick root "ball" for each size and the whole root system in general will be more abundant and much denser than going straight to final pot.

However, keep in mind this rule doesn't work for autoflowers. You want those in the final pot right away.
