If you truly believe there's a heaven and hell, that life in either is eternal.

Then why don't you dedicate your life to your religion and your God?

Why risk eternal damnation by doing anything that is not related to religion when you can spend an amount of time that is the equivalent of an atom in the ocean living an uncomfortable religious life and then an eternity getting everything and anything you want.

I was raised in a semi religious household until I apostatized at the age of 19 (before then there wasn't a doubt in my mind that God existed and that my religion was the true religion, funny huh).
I wish I had asked myself that question back then. I have no idea what my answer would've been, what's yours?

edit : Can't believe I have to point this out - this is a question for people who believe in God and have a religion.
Not for you silly atheists ;)

  2. To answer the thread title

    Because that's fucking stupid

    lol

  3. yeah I always wondered why believers are home watching football on Sundays lol. must feel guilty everytime a player prays after a TD

  4. I don't base my life on what other people write.

Whether it's a self-help book or religious text people claim came from God.

No, those words came from another human, bro. God didn't sign that shit.

  5. Simple, because I don't want to. I dedicate my life to nothing except myself, end of story.

  6. And that's how they get you, through fear of the unknown.

If I'm going to follow a religion based on the terror of it's damnation then I would need to follow hundreds or maybe even thousands of religions; due to the fact many have a damnation for non-believers.  Choosing one to avoid that specific damnation is still equivalent to hitting the lottery.

  7. If there was a God and he had created a religion I'd imagine he'd find a way more creative and profound way of convincing us to follow his word. Threats are so primal.

  8. Ahh, let the posts regarding religion out of convenience commence.

  9. I already apologized to God in advance, so I'm set.

The strains of the world we live in make people do things contrary to what they believe.

  11. When I go to church, I can't get past the fact that I'm just listening to some fuckin' guy. Do you ever think of that shit when you go in there? That's just some dude. And people are like, 'No! That's a special guy.' No it isn't! It isn't. No, he didn't levitate down from the ceiling with this white light around him. Why would you listen to another human being tell you where you're gonna go when you die? It's just like:
'Dude, have you ever been dead?'
    'No.'
'Great. So wouldn't it be safe to assume that you wouldn't have the slightest fuckin' idea what you're talking about?'
Yeah, you're making it up. You're making the shit up. You're not fooling me with the robes and the candles, speakin' in old English, 'He saideth unto you-eth'. Shut the fuck up, you don't talk like that. You're just some guy, your name's Jerry, you play soccer, you got your ass kicked in gym class, and now you're doin' this.'

(It's just a stand-up comedy bit so don't take it so personally, all of you church-going robot cunts)

And of course he is right, not in the making it up part, just in the believing what someone else told him, and then passing these ideas out as IF he knows them to be true.

If he truly believes in the stories, belief will let you do that, but the good ones, and there are many, do it from a good place, with a good heart, because they genuinely believe that passing across the message makes a difference.

They believe we desperately need alternatives to the materialist view, whether some do simply spout the word without question, or really do think about it, express with feeling their own understanding. Better yet, when they reveal their own experiences of their own path.

They know they are just like you and I; watching TV, wiping their arses, loving their family. But, like a performance, when some put on their robes, they feel they make a connection, feel the spirit, reveal something real, and they know it can make a difference to those who feel a need to listen.

  13. I'd like to think that even if I wasn't religious, as long as I've tried to be a good person (or done more good in the world than bad) that he'd be cool letting me into heaven. Doubt he'd be that judgemental since many people who are religious aren't necessarily very good people. Just cause you go to church on a Sunday, doesn't make you a 'good person'.
Being a good person has nothing to do with religion, I'd like to think if a god did exist that he'd understand that.

  14. Religion, if anything, should be a stepping stone, not something to adhere IMO.

  15.
But it's false hope that they're giving, which is unhealthy. Also, Bill Burr often acknowledges how he doesn't read and people shouldn't listen to him because he's a dumbass. It's just stand-up comedy so no offense should be taken.

He is satirizing the ritual aspect of organised religion because of how pointless, outdated and annoying it is.
The point of the video is: why let an institution tell you what to believe about something that they don't know anything more about than you do? True spirituality comes from within, not from fancy robes and ancient books.
    Spirituality =/= Religion

  16.
    Agreed.

It's good that such things are satirised because it is a valid and necessary thing to do to any institution that can and does take itself too seriously

I disagree in it giving false hope though, because there is still something at its core that has something to say to those who feel a need to get it that way.

It's not my approach, nor yours, and while there are many reasons why people are in ritualised religion, many don't come to it until much later in life, when they've had a chance, and have taken the time to consider, other options. If they're still choosing it, then they're getting something from it they feel works for them. I wouldn't deny them that.

  17. Because I'm a free thinker.

Why do so many of your posts have to do with religion? You are coming off as an ass, or maybe I'm just reading you as being condescending.

      What's silly about atheists?

God has never asked anyone to devote any.more time than one hour each Sunday

If you devote your llife to God then you are missing the point of his teachings

The point is to devote our lives to.eachother, to enjoy our gift of life, And toto love

  20.
God never asked you to devote one hour a week. This was made up along the way and justified using ambiguous texts. Those texts all talk about coming together and helping each other as a community, the "once a week" concept feels more like a compromise with God.
The original Christian tribes and fellowships used to dedicate their entire lives to Christianity. You'd do the same if it wasn't for all the modern distractions in your life. God put you here to prove you're worthy of eternal life in paradise. Not to enjoy yourself.

    Because I enjoy criticizing religion.

You're all missing the point. The question is why you're risking the prospect of hell by living a life of sin. I mean how many of the religious amongst you have even read the book your adhere to?
