On January 15, 2015 NASA and ESA's Hubble Space Telescope released the most detailed image of the Andromeda Galaxy ever taken. At 1.5 billion pixels, this image offers viewers an unprecedented depth of detail that includes more than 100 million stars and thousands of star clusters spread across 40,000 light-years.

The image file requires 4.3GB of disk space and offers 69,536 x 22,230 pixels.

Also known as M31, the Andromeda Galaxy â€œis the nearest spiral galaxy to our Milky Way galaxy, but not the nearest galaxy overall.” After extensive data collected in 2006 by the Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists believe there are approximately 1 trillion stars in the Andromeda galaxy, which is more than twice the number of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy that has an estimated 200 – 400 billion stars.

After looking at the video and image, one can't help but notice not only the sheer scale of M31, but also the sheer vastness of space. Fortunately, NASA has several projects in the works that will continue to offer humankind the reality check it so often needs.

  2. Beautiful, no artist could ever produce something more stunning than what the universe makes.

  3. This is the same galaxy that the Milky Way will collide with in the future. Odds are we wont be harmed, but it's interesting to imagine it all mixing together.

  4. Ummmm I don't think I.can even view. 4gb immage

  7. Look at it really stoned, find shapes in the passing stars hehe

  8. That's mind blowing.
There must be so much life out there it's nion impossible for there not to be!

Beer before Grass, you're on your arse.
Grass before Beer, you're in the clear.

  9. you're right, our Milky Way alone has had over 40,000,000,000 chances to create life (with scientific mathematical data) and there are an Infinite number of Galaxies in the Universe.

That's infinity to the power of 40B which is already an unimaginable number. You couldn't write that down on all the paper in the world.

Chances are that life is out there is literally unimaginably true. It would be like finding a microscopic needle in a cosmic sized haystack but still very possible for the universe.

Funny side note: A single grain of sand has more particles than all the computers in the world could store in their memory, knowing that it makes it even harder to find living organisms in space, because no computer system could replicate what the universe has done

But if I don't have a 4k display how can I appreciate the beauty in 4k? Wouldn't I be appreciating the beauty in whatever my screen's pixel display is? Yes.

Fascinating, when can I go there?

  11. Born too late to explore earth.
Born too early to explore the galaxy.
Born just in time to witness dank memes.

  12. you can still explore the earth.

Though all the TV we watch spoils it I think

  15. Lol, 69,536 x 22,230 pixels is not 4k resolution.
    1. \t"Technically, "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard. However while your local multiplex shows images in native 4096 x 2160 4K resolution, the new Ultra HD consumer format has a slightly lower resolution of 3840 X 2160. "

that picture is god mode. And sorry about the font size. Don't know why it did that.

  16. this looks like whats left of a huge explotion, is out galaxy the center of the univers?

  17. We are the universe :p  Our size makes no difference.

  18. Went down to my local planetarium last week and it was amazing. I highly recommend going, you learn a vast amount of space knowledge and if i ever get lost, finding the north star will be easy peasy! [IMG]

  19. need one of the new 4k TV's to enjoy it?  lol!
