So I'm not computer illiterate, but when it comes to things like hardware I don't really know what I'm looking at. So I need some help with putting together a parts list for a PC build to make sure that I pick good pieces that are compatible with eachother, and to make sure that I don't miss anything.

    Here's my list so far:

Here is my updated list: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/

    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($317.75 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($208.09 @ SuperBiiz)
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($74.99 @ Newegg)
    Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($104.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($53.97 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card  ($343.99 @ B&H)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($112.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($104.99 @ NCIX US)
    Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer  ($18.75 @ OutletPC)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($88.98 @ OutletPC)
    Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter  ($38.75 @ OutletPC)
    Case Fan: Noctua NF-F12 PWM 55.0 CFM 120mm  Fan  ($19.68 @ Amazon)
    Total: $1556.91

  2. Is this a first build for you?

Yea. Like I said, I'm not computer illiterate but I'm not hardware savvy. Only thing I know so far is that the power supply I listed is overkill and not to go with that extra solid state drive, but I heard conflicting ideas there.

  4. Okay, your gonna need thermal paste for your heat sink and cpu, I used Antec formula 7 for mine. I'm only seeing one ssd in your list there, I have two 1 TB and 1 Mushkin ssd. Got the OS on the ssd of course. and the extra a 2TB comes in handy for loads of storage purposes. the 128gb ssd will fill fast with the OS and if u have a few games to play on it. The 1TB would be perfect for those large files. I like the power supply, i don't think you would run into any underpower issues, playing it safe there. Do read up on space allotment in your case, although i doubt you will have probs with that. That motherboard tho! I've wanted that since i seen it on newwegg some time ago, looks BA!

  5. Very solid.

  6. Looks solid, board I would switch to a Z97, Solid state minimum 240gb, PSU drop to a 650w at most, 850 is overkill.

I dont have a hard drive or optical drive, just a 240gb solid state with my OS and a few big games on with 60gb left free. I dont store anything on my PC tho, and if you dont either then just ditch that hard drive and save some for a larger solid state.

I'm confused on the difference between SSDs. The one I have picked out is 256gb for $105. But I see some 128g for $125 (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz7pd128bw). I don't understand what could be so different in something like that.

Also, if I go with that ram(2x4g), would it hurt anything if I decided to buy that same one later to make it 16g? I've heard they won't get along sometimes. Which seems weird if it's the same kind.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for the best motherboard I could get for about $200?

Otherwise, does anyone see any part in that list that could potentially limit/bottleneck the performance of some other part?

Stick with the Mobo you have now. Maybe match it up with an Asus DirectCU II. That motherboard has a hidden feature where if you pair it up with an Asus GPU they work in harmony and get some extra juice. If you dropped down to a 4770k would you be able to afford a GTX 980 or 780TI?

Its up to you but I would go with 8GB ram for the sake of being future proof. There's only 4 slots, difference is a potential maximum 16gb versus 32gb. You're not going to need that much unless you do super workstation stuff but its nice to have. A lot of people say you don't need 16gb but I find 8gb to be too low and 12gb to be an odd number that won't get the full benefits of duel channel.

  10. Whichever you can afford.

Looking at that PSU, you probably won't need 850W. It doesn't hurt to have though. The price is good too.

What resolution and how many hertz is your monitor?

I'm just using a junky monitor for a bit. Going to get a nicer 144hz one a little later on.

  12. you need a larger case. it is going to be tough to fit all of that in the case you listed. i would go with a server / full size ATX case. i know the case info states a full size ATX mother board will fit and that the case itself is indeed a full size ATX. however, it looks a little on the small size for everything you are trying to fit in there. aside from that it looks pretty nice to me!  :metal:

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($112.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Only thing I'm still deciding on is Windows 7 or 8.1.

  15. love the case. rig should kick ass. still overkill on power supply tho lol

  16. Anyone have any suggested guides or videos for putting everything together? I've watched a few videos. Only thing I'm really concerned about is plugging everything into the appropriate spot on the motherboard, and what to do after it's all done and I'm ready to turn it on for the first time.

  17. Windows 8.1 will get a free upgrade to 10 they say when it comes out.

  18. I'm just hoping that you built it OK, without static electricity problems.

  19. IMHO one of the best things to do when you do build up a system is wire management.  This is overlooked by so many people but it really sets your system up to look clean and allows air to freely flow through the chassis.

Looks great bro.  Best of luck!
