Weed + The Immune System

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by fiercelol, Jan 17, 2015.

  1. Sup blades. So I've been smoking daily for 3 years now and as far as I can recall since then, have not once been sick besides the occasional minor cold virus. Before I started smoking I would typically get a flu bug once or twice a year, but not anymore. It's pretty dry where I live, so unfortunately I do have a cold right now, and as a result haven't smoked for the last couple days.

My questions are these: Could it actually be the smoking that has improved my immune system? Or is it just coincidence that I haven't been particularly sick since I started blazing?

On top of that, my symptoms have been a sore throat and a bit a of a dry cough. I should probably not smoke until those symptoms are completely gone, right? I assume that smoke could make both the cough and sore throat worse, but obviously it would be nice to have a toke for the pain. I guess I'm basically just hoping someone will tell me I'm wrong. Am I?

  2. Coincidence ...my guess.

  3. usually its easier for people to get sick from smoking, especially if you smoke with friends/roommates.

but you can still smoke while you're sick. it may even make you feel better.

  4. I smoke weed primarily to suppress my immune system. You smoking might have something to do with you not getting sick, but it has been proven through clinical studies that it suppresses your immune systems respose. Research how it treats Crohn's disease and you'll learn exactly what it does. Temporary though, if a normal person smoked all day everyday, they are would have a weakened immune system, but i don't think even being high 1/3 of the day everyday would have a significant impact on it.

  5. Cannabis is not preventing you from getting the flu.

  6. It may be an indirect contributor. Stress levels directly effect the strength of your immune system. Maybe your stress levels have been so well managed with the use of cannabis that your immune system has been doing very well. This would be an individual response of course.

  7. Since I've been taking RSO daily, my colds go away quickly, like in 5 days rather than 3 weeks and I get only 1-2 colds a year compared to before when I'd get 3-4. Even smoking shortens my colds and makes me feel better (it is an expectorant). Cannabis also helps me sleep, hastening recovery.

  8. To the people claiming it helps keep you healthy: are you sure it's weed or was it a change of environment? Like leaving high school and starting college is completely different germ wise, people are typically cleaner and more hygienic than 14 year olds. Not saying you're wrong, I'm actually curious

My personal theory, and I'm probably wrong because I'm not a scientist or an astronaut or anything, but I think that when your stressed out your immune system is weakened. Whether that is emotional stress, physical stress, daily stress, whatever, I think certain people really feel that more then others especially with their immune systems.
So if smoking weed relaxes you, or helps you to cope with some of the more stressful parts of your day, you should be relaxed more on average and therefore have a bit more of a stable immune system then if you were stressing it all the time.
I haven't had even a cold in like.....nearly 4 years now. I think that weed plays maybe 14% of a part in that, in regards to stress reduction. I think if I didn't use the other 86%(immune system + certain products)  that weed wouldn't stop me from getting sick, either.

  10. I smoke daily and rarely get sick but I don't think it is a direct result of cannabis, however, I do think it is an indirect result of smoking. Like most smokers, I get the munchies when I smoke and I tend to end up eating a lot of citrus and spicy foods. Both citrus fruits and hot peppers are loaded with vitamin C and other things that help boost the immune system. Take a look at you diet OP and maybe you will find that your favorite munchie foods are keeping you healthy.

  11. I have a depleted immune system. I used to get sick a lot, but since i starting smoking (and stopped getting vaccinated for the flu) i havent been sick in 4 years.

Last week i quite smoking and within 3 days i got a lung infection. Coincidence? Maybe, but odd to note.

  12. There are endocannabinoid receptors that affect the immune system. The question would be whether they stimulate, supress or if it is situational IE ease an overactive immune response or stimulate when needed.

The stress reduction connection can affect this also. Less stress = less taxation of the adrenal glands, less oxidative stress.

taking cannabis oil in enough quantity has shown to increase serotonin and serotonin increases immune response and knocks down depression( another immune system killer). so taken in correct dosage, yes it will increase your immunity
