New to OMMP Card (Bipolar II, PTSD) advice on strains? :)

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Raen, Jan 16, 2015.

  1. Hello everyone!

I am new to this site, and new to my state's medical marijuana program (OMMP). I have smoked in the past for fun, but I have never sought out marijuana for medicinal use. I'm hoping to get a little advice from someone who may be (or know someone) in the same situation as me.

My smoking history: I have never paid attention or known anything about strains, etc. but I do know that sometimes I get extremely paranoid, and sometimes I get extremely lazy when I smoke. I can do with the laze effects, but it's the paranoia and heart-racing feelings that I am dreading. I have been doing a TON of reading about strains etc. so I can educate myself and make the best choices (and not sound like an idiot when I try to talk about bud) but I'm still very new to all of this! :)

My situation: I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar II (think bipolar disorder without the typically popularized manic giggly/sobbing mood swings - it's a slower shift between being extremely depressed and feeling normal) and PTSD, which causes bouts of anxiety and depression. I'm looking for something that will be uplifting and make me feel positive without gluing me to the couch and making me feel ultra paranoid. I want to be able to move around and feel good. I would like to be able to read (when I have smoked in the past, it has been impossible for me to focus on books, haha) if possible.

Does anyone have (or know of someone with) similar issues who can recommend a decent medicine for someone like me?

I'm also very interested in edibles and alternative methods of intaking THC.

Thank you for your help! I look forward to reading your responses!

Vaping is the new way of smoking weed these days there are vapes that use dry herb or vaping CBD olis in liquid form... now onto edibles, gummy bears, cookies , cakes the list goes on for days. here is a site that OMMP has up on editables

    and strains

  3. Oh they even have soda with THC in it its popular in CO

  4. If I were you I'd steer clear of Sativas as they may increase your anxiety. I'd start with a 100% Indica, see what you like and don't like, then try hybrid strains with more % Sativas in successive increments. Somewhere in the middle your likely to find some good medicine.

  5.
This seems like good advice because sativas are uplifting, yet they can cause some anxiety and paranoia. Indicas don't usually cause anxiety or paranoia, but they are couch-locking! It's sort of counter-intuitive, but lots of people who are bi-polar find sativas most helpful. Maybe a 50/50 hybrid would be a good start.

  6. Probably right about that as far as the Bipolar piece. As far as PTSD, often what couchlocks most just makes us just feel normal . It lessons the flashbacks and or/panic attacks and constant anxiety but doesn't always couch lock us. For example I love going hiking after toking some Purps. It helps me be ok with letting my guard down so I can be comfortable, relax and see the beauty of the woods.

  7. I Agree with the advice on Indica strains. I go for a few puffs of %100 Indica, or Kush hybrids /Crosses.... Sativa often create to much activity in my brain. i suffer from ptsd...Severe Anxiety, and Severe Depression, Scolioses and Autism.

    my strains Are:

    Chemdog (Hybrid)
    White Widow(?)Hybrid
    Bubba Kush(?)Hybrid

For Relaxing, but not to much... I like to be Lifting weights... exercise etc...

  8. Try Blueberry and Mother of all Berry for daytime, then Kosher Kush and LA Confidential for nighttime/chilling out. A high CBD strain is excellent for anxiety. I use it when I need to be around people and take a toke of it before bed for sleep/pain. I will also mix with a daytime bowl-like 1/2 CBD, 1/2 blueberry. This helps kick pain and anxiety.

I have PTSD, amongst a host of other health issues, and these are the things my caregiver provides me. Also, try a tincture for daytime on the go, when you can't actually smoke. Mine is in a spray top, so it's super easy to grab from my purse for anxiety attacks.

I can honestly say though, that the most effective combination on earth for mental health (and physical) is water, exercise, sleep, eating whole foods and medical marijuana. With this new routine, I don't have very many anxiety attacks anymore and have eliminated dependency on clonodine and xanax.

Best of luck to you!  hope you discover what works best in your case. :)

I don't know much about specific strains, but it sounds like you could use a slight indica-dominant hybrid. I'm the same way as you, I want to be able to be active without the anxiety and headiness and I also want the calming effects of indica without falling the fuck asleep.

I'm also a new OMMP patient and I can't wait til my card gets here so I can actually pick and choose what I want. I'm really excited for the high CBD/low THC strains I'll finally be able to experiment with and still go to work.

  10. If you aren't looking to get baked and just level yourself out try cbds out, cannatonic does amazing for mental disorders. Even mixing cbds with thc enriched strains will help. Sativa dominate strains can cause you to have the negative effects you are looking to avoid, but to be honest they are the best for your conditions. Using a cbd strain in mix with a sativa dominate thc strain should take away the negative effects and leave you with a uplifted feeling. When you do the mix start with 70% cbd strain and 30% thc strain then go to a 50/50 blend if your body can handle it. Those two mixes I found to be the best with 50/50 working the best.
