I've been tinkering around with soil mixes and I think I've found a winner. I like to start with a bagged organic potting soil for my base mix, just because that's how I learned, but you can easily make your own base mix with the 1/3 compost 1/3 perlite 1/3 peat moss. Mjmama's Organic Soil Recipe Per 3 cubic ft potting soil 30 cups worm castings (about 15 pounds) 12 cups rock dust 1 cup kelp meal 1 cup alfalfa meal 1 cup bone meal 1 cup neem meal 1/2 cup guano 1/2 cup rock phosphate 1/2 cup greensand 1/2 cup lime 1/2 cup oyster shell then mix in 1/3 perlite if you didn't already make your own base mix including perlite. The amount in potting soil isnt enough. You could mix this recipe into just 2 cubic ft of soil if you have an extra hungry strain but this should keep most plants happy. This is a side by side pic of twin Deadhead OG clones. The first grown in regular potting soil, the second grown in my soil mix. The difference is pretty clear.
Aaaargh! I can't help it... Both of those plants look overwatered, especially the plant on the left... The plant in your mix definitely looks healthier. What's the "regular potting soil"?
The two plants have been watered the same amount and were bone dry before their last watering. Transplanted today into 3 gallon pots up from the 1 gallons they were vegging in. Just coming out of their dark cycle for this pic. The regular potting soil is Masters Pride organic potting soil. It's a good brand, supposed to be a sister company to the Coast of Maine they have out east. It just needs more perlite. My soil recipe has a ton of perlite to help with drainage.
It's for one large bag of soil, like roots 707 comes in 3 cubic foot bags; or smaller 1.5 cubic foot bags. Or Ocean Forest Soil comes in 1.5 cubic foot bags, so this recipe would amend 1 large bag or 2 small bags of soil. OR if you mix your own base it would need 1 cubic foot of compost or castings, 1 cubic foot of peat, and 1 cubic foot of perlite.
No one mix that wins it all but good general mix none the less. in the garden did that beginners soil mix thread that has to be the most concise and well put together thread on soil mixe for beginners.
Check your visual. The leaves are curled and pointing down. Certainly not "praying"... But mj' has already pointed out that the pic's where taken right after coming out of the dark cycle...
You're kidding, right? The one on the right looks great..I don't know what you're saying about the leaves 'curling' but they certainly aren't. They are clearly higher than the main top...therefore they're pointing up, ie 'praying' Nevermind; clearly you're 'right' and I'm wrong. *rollseyes*
Have you taken this mix to finish? The one on the right looks like it is heavy on nitrogen. maybe the pics are just a bit off color wise. Show me a pic of your previous pre-harvest with this soil!
Green plants are a worldwide problem didn't you know? Billions and billions are being spent by governments around the world to solve this problem. We an only hope that they're successful. Stay tuned - here comes flushing! CC
I haven't yet run this mix to harvest indoors because I just got my indoor set up this winter, but it's nearly the same as the mix I use outdoors. I have had great results pulling multi-pound plants with it outdoors. The only different between my outdoor soil and indoor is the outdoor soil has some native soil mixed in and my indoor needed a lot of extra perlite because my grow room is on the cool side. I started a couple plants without enough added perlite and they were staying wet forever in between waterings. This new batch with more perlite has been showing great results so far. Take it or leave it, but I stand by the recipe. It has high quality ingredients, a good balance of NPK and micro nutrients, good drainage. If you see any issues with my plants, it's 99% more likely to be my grow room temps than any problem with my soil. The soil is on point. I really didn't think people would get so heated over sharing a soil recipe....
Thanks Jerry! Same to you. Ive been loving life, enjoying my first year with the new baby. Can you believe it's already been a year? I can't. She is the happiest kid you could ever meet. Practically born smiling.
