400w MH/HPS SCrOG - Lemon Kush/Big Bud x White Widow

Discussion in 'Indoor Grow Journals' started by Sully023, Jan 2, 2015.

  1. Third Grow
First two were LST with CFL light at 100-150w actual. yields 1 oz and 2 oz.

CFL isn't worth the time for the low yields. With a little experience under my hand i bought a 400w electronic dimmable ballast. Constructed a 3x3 grow box that is 4' high; (pictures to come).

Waiting on mylar ordered online for the walls, along with a 400w mh bulb. will currently be using HPS for veg until it arrives.

    setup:
    3x3x4 Grow box air tight
    4" exhaust fan
    2" intake
    oscillating fan for circulation
    400w MH/HPS
SCROG screen made with string with squares 2" in size.
    60 L of Soil

    Strains:
    Lemon Kush (1)
Big Bud x White Widow (1)

This is a soil grow, a no name potting soil with next to no added nutrients. The grow is currently one week in, so no nutes added yet.

    Advice on Nutrients?
I have nothing but Miracle (all purpose and ultra bloom) in my house and live in a small community over 4 hours away from any sort for gardening shop?? (also, not looking on spending a lot on nutes since this will be my last soil grow, -moving to ebb and flow )
    and suggestions?

  2. I use the flora series of nutes. It's all personal preference really. Looking good so far.

  3. And do you have that tub split in half so they can't mix roots? Could be a big problem if you didn't.

I didn't, don't see that as a problem as they will be harvested and switched to flower at the same time and trained to the same canopy level (the screen). The container is holding 15 gallons of soil versus my normal 5 gal each. (7.5 gal each theoretically). more than enough room for a 15-16 week grow.

As for the nutrients, my problem is not having access to buy anything other than miracle grow in my location. the grow is a week in and ordering online isn't economical since soil nutrients will be no good to be after this one grow. looking for opinions on miracle gro  (using all purpose for beg and ultra bloom for flower)?
Or anything else i can use, even if its bone meal, organic, etc.

I hace grown with miracle gro, but they were 100w cfl grows yielding 1-2oz. im hoping for 8oz with the 400w setup and scroging a 3x3 area

I'm just saying you should give your plants their own pot each. Especially since you have 2 different strains. And I promise I won't be the only person to tell you that. You're going to be feeding your plants nutes. Each strain is specific to itself. So one plant needs a certain amount of something and others need others. So you'll get a deficiency and feed your plant to fix it and fuck up your other one and so on and so forth. I wish you good luck. And as for your nutrients, miracle grow will work it's just not what's best for your plants. MG soil is too rich in nutrients and is bad for young plants. You can order very small bottles that will benefit you much better. And you won't have a ton or any left over. If you want the best results from your crop then at least do a little research on what people suggest. There are a lot of really knowledgeable and experienced growers in these forums. Good luck.

  7. Thanks,

I'm aware MG isn't the best and i really don't want to use it. I've done quite a bit of reading up on the topic and everyone keeps mentioning using MG soil (time release and such), and like you mentioned above above using soil.

I'm using a potting soil with no added nutrients, or very little (0.01-0.01-0.01). I like to be in complete control of what i'm feeding. I didn't realize about the strain difference and sharing a pot, too late now i guess; learn more every grow. i'm not to concerned as most of the grows ive read about with multi strains have shared pots in one way or another, weather it be soil, hydro etc. I wont be doing it again, but okay for now.

The MG I would unfortunately be using would be All purpose which is mixed in with the water during feeding. And the Ultra Bloom for Flower. I also use Black Strap Organic Molasses occasionally.

If i go ahead and order some Advanced Nutrients for Hydro Ebb and Flow (next permanent set up), can i use them for soil at all? Because of i my location I would still have to use MG until at least Flower before receiving them?

  8. Most nutrients are used for both.

    Day 11 Veg

Temps a bit high at 30C
    45% RH
watered today, next watering will start nutes. Good news though, I managed to get a order of GH Micro and Bloom for the Lucas Formula Feeding. No need for MG.

    Attached Files:

  10. My temps at the flower height are around 32C. (89.6F). I have a 10 inch oscillating fan inside the box, and a 4 inch 100 cfm outtake (replacing the air 2.7 times a minutes). 2 inch intake with passive air . the negative pressure works  (testing with paper) and the room temp is around 20C . Any suggestions to lower it? My light is 18 inches away. 400w hps

  11. Get the air coming in your box colder

  12. they seem to be doing fine but its still a concern. problem is the house is central furnace with one thermostat. and with the time of year its always on 20+.

I have one thermometer just under the canopy reading 32-33C (89.6-91.4F), but also a thermostat outside the box with a sensor hanging just above the plant reading 28-30C (82.4-86F). tried laying frozen bottles of water in front of the intake to chill the air before entering, it lowers it to 28 (82.4F) even, and only for an hour or so at a time.

  13. Do what you gata do to keep em low

Just realized my exhaust is 6 in circle = 28 inch^2 area and my 2  1/4 inch intake only has an area of just over 3 inch^2. Though intake had to be smaller for negative pressure but did a bit of research and alot of recommendations say to have a bigger intake. opened up the intake alot and still had negative pressure, see how temps do now.

  17. Day 20 Veg

Moved grow box from closet to fix heat issues.

Received my 400w MH in the Mail 15 days earlier than expected.

Last feeding was Lucas Formula GH Flora. Water feeding tomorrow morning.

Made a new screen that is much neater and stronger.

    Still waiting on mylar.

Been tucking quite a bit under the screen already.

Day 28 Veg (end of week 4)

    Tucking a lot everyday

Will not be growing the lemon kush plant by GoHD">again[IMG]. Every bend of a branch snaps it in half. i have some by GoHD">saved[IMG] and a lot have gone. The main Cola snapped, but just above a node so acted like a top.

WW X BB hasn't had any injuries yet and is growing very well. She had by GoHD">filled out[IMG] the lemon kush gaps very well. Wish I had planted two of these.

Not sure if i will be vegging 6 weeks or 8. Im hoping to flip at 70% full.

no leaf colors have changed and all new growth is very healthy.

Very big improvement in growth speed since the mylar was added.

At this point the undergrowth is so much its restricting being able to tuck new growth (very rough) and no light is getting to the lower branches to grow those branches up to the canopy.
Ive read alot about defoliation and decided to give it a try. (If anyone is following this grow i'm sure this is the point where i may get controversial defoliation opinions.)

I went a bit heavy on the defoliation, maybe to much, but as you can see she recovered more than good and exploded with growth. stringy branches thickened and hardened and little branches that would normally be cut for flowering reached the top of the canopy.

I used the openness to rearrange some branches for optimal layout.

    Day 43 - week 7 (1 day in)

you can't see threw the canopy already. Recovered perfectly and as far as i can tell didn't stunt growth. Leafs and branches everywhere. vegging for another week and 6 days. (8 week veg)
