Just wanted to get some advice on some fellow blades about an opportunity that was recently presented to me. Been doing a lot of introspection about whats important to me lately and wanted to get some feedback from others.

I currently make $60,000 working 40 hour weeks with about 3.5 months of 55 hour weeks each year, 3 weeks vacation. I enjoy almost everyone i work with, but it is quite boring. Easy place to work for, i know i'll never get fired.. etc. I was recently presented an opportunity where i would be working between 40-80 hour weeks with about 25% travel (interstate mostly to warm weather places and New York - not too bad). If i had to guess i would be working on average about 60 hours per week for the whole year. This job pays $72,000, 5 weeks vacation, would be more interesting, and has better exit opportunities down the road.

Would you guys grind out the extra hours and more work for the raise or just stay put make a good but not great living for the rest of your life?

Kinda depends, what do you do?

  3. yea of course.  being bored is worse than anything.

  4. Do you want dull security in a cubicle or do you want travel bundled with opportunities.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

Unless you like security over the spontaneous.

  5. Do what makes you happy, not how much money you make.

Accountant currently and would be moving to more of a finance type gig. I'm also 24 and single if that matters.

  8. Definitely would prefer the spontaneous. Problem is, although I do take a lot of pride in my work I'm not exactly a workaholic. If ya know what i mean haha.

  9. How on earth can someone work 80 hours a week? To me those insane hours are nowhere near worth the 12k raise.

  10.
Well being over-worked when you're not a workaholic can be a hellish experience.

    I wouldn't recommend that.

  11. Do you ever plan on having kids or a family of your own?  If so, the traveling job working a lot of hours is going to stop you from enjoying those special moments that make life really worthwhile.

If you just plan on being a bachelor your whole life and don't care about the free time then it's up to you.

  12. He said 60 hours..I didn't see 80 anywhere.  People have families and sadly a 40 hour work week is still not enough to provide for them.  Many people without a college education have to do this.

  14. Stick with the more relaxed job.

I was doing freight fowarding for logistic companies, making decent salary (about 70k), but I was losing my hair, losing sleep, and losing time for myself. Being young (mid 20s), i stuck with it it for 4 years and then switched career, to being a sushi chef.
Less hours, talk to cool customers, drink alcohol on the job (job requirement, no joke), and make about 60k, of course no chef makes that starting out, I had to put up with a lot of shit to get skills (working as a prepper or helper is shit work and low pay, but it's required).

So, do what you at least enjoy AND is good salary.
