Asthmatic after effects of vaping

  1. Hey Grasscity fam,

I've been an asthmatic since I was very young and it's gotten much better over the years.

Within the last year and a half I started toking and loved it but was worried on how it would effect my asthma. I noticed when I would smoke joints, blunts, etc I would be fine until the next day where I would wake up with tightness in my chest, wheezing, and having to clear my throat every 5 seconds.

I figured this was a result of combustion so I went and purchased an arizer solo. Absolutely love it and gets the job done, but I'm still waking up with this issue. This morning I had to use my inhaler to come things down.

Does this happen to anyone else? I'm a bit concerned

  2. Yes this happened to me. I had very mild asthma as a kid. I smoked cigarettes for a long time and made it much worse. I quit 2 years ago and I'm healing but sometimes vapor can be harsh on my lungs especially when I started vaping. But I got used to it and it didn't take long.

It was definitely more irritating than I expected so I understand your concern but I think you'll be ok just take it slow.

  3. Thanks for your response man. Yeah it had me a bit worried.

It's almost the same exact effects I was getting when I was smoking joints. It's a shame because I really love the arizer solo and I thought it'd be much easier on me. I'm still experimenting so I may keep vaping for a few days but if this continues idk...

  4. Give it time for your lungs to clear all the crap out.  I stopped smoking 8 months ago and my chest doesn't get tight anymore.

Make some pot brownies and give your lungs a break. :)

I'm asthmatic as well and I still haven't really gotten this down to an exact science yet but what kind of vaporizer do you have and do you use it in bag mode or with a whip?

Here are just a few ideas and/or suggestions. I found these online mostly, some are from my own experience, all of them could help, or none of them :p.

If you use a bag you can try and let it cool a bit longer, take shorter drags and let the one bag last for, like, an hour or so instead of choking it down.

If you use a whip you could try cooling the vapor by hooking it to a bong with ice in it and/or turn on the fan so you need to use little to no lung power. Don't have a bong? Cola bottle with a hole, fill it with ice ;).
Heat can annoy your lungs (without going into much detail :p).
If it works they have small mods for your Arizer, I'd have to look up which ones exactly but I know I saw them somewhere. It would be easier then having a pocket vaporizer and a cola bottle in your pocket lol.

Don't hold your breath. If you take long hits or hold your breath you put tension on the muscles around your sternum and ribcage which, if they aren't used to it  and underdeveloped (as with most asthmatic patients) could lead to a painful feeling either right after smoking/vaping or even annoy you for a few days.

Keep in mind that vaping eliminates most carcinogenic particles simply because it doesn't get hot enough, that's why we use it. If you go over 200 degrees Celcius (that's what, 395 or 495 F? something like that, whichever sounds more plausible :p) it WILL start to release some carcinogenic particles already (benzene for example, that has a boiling point of 200 degrees celcius). That being said, vaporizing drasticly lowers toxicity and tar intake but it doesn't eliminate it so that could still cause irritation.

Next to that, your lungs could just be sensitive to one of the terpenes or whatever particles you might be sensitive to in weed.

Do take into account that the latter 2 will give more of a feeling of irritation or rawness then real pain unless you smoke a looooot or are really sensitive.

Last but not least, Acid Reflux. You don't have to taste it, you don't have to instantly feel it if you're used to it (trust me I know, I've had GERD and an Hiatal Hernia for 8 years, I don't even TASTE stomach acid).
While smoking cannabis cures GERD and Acid Reflux for one person it might cause acid reflux for another. Eventhough it has a lot to do with what you shove down while you have the munchies as well it is still a factor some people have to deal with.
You could try a simple anti-acid from the drug store and see if it helps.

If none of the suggestions I gave you help you can always try and eat it. Eventhough your stomach has a hard time digesting weed there is nothing annoying your esophagus unless you actually get acid reflux from that as well.

If all else fails, try capsules (you can try one with some ABV and fatty oil in it, saves you weed and takes away the nasty taste of ABV but gets you super super stoned :p), it takes longer to digest them and at that point there is a chance it moved down to your intestines for further digestion.

You can also, ALWAYS, discuss things with your doc. They won't tell your loved ones or whoever, they have a Hippocratic oath to hold and there is no reason for them to break it over pot. They might disagree with you smoking it but if you want to it's still your body and they still have to help you treat your symptoms and unless it's untreatable without just stopping with weed they have to try and work around it.

Edit: Oops just noticed you said Arizer Solo. Discard the bag mode part then, I'll leave it here anyway if other people might find it useful.

  8. Also a couple questions about your Solo:

    1. which of the 7 temperature settings do you use?

    2. do you use any kind of filter (screen, cotton, water pipe)?

  9. Smoking? then yes.  You get the most from vaping when you stop smoking completely.  But it takes around 3 to 4 weeks before you'll really notice the difference.
