Root of the mind

  1. It seems that many of our thoughts and beliefs are influenced, sometimes perhaps even caused, by other thoughts and beliefs of ours.Somewhat like a chain reaction, one thought gives way to another.

But, it is a multi-dimensional chain reaction. A belief may cause a thought, or it may cause another belief. In the same way, a thought may cause a belief, or it may cause another thought.

If you could chart the derivation of our thoughts and beliefs, it might resemble something like a tree; a tree which has additional links from leaf to leaf, leaf to root, and so on.

Each thought we have is in someway related to every other thought we've had. I suppose there may be a rare instance when we have a completly new thought. But, for the most part, our thoughts and beliefs look like a cylindrical web of causation. So there must be a point at the top which was the original thought.

My question is, what is the original thought? Is it common among all people? When is it first formed? Shits buggin me out man.

This sounds like a delineation of determinism - which would not only include one's thoughts, as you have said above, but also the entire scope of the natural world.

  3. When thought started in man (capable evolved brains) we assumed it was the voice of God speaking and consequentially decided to slaughter millions over the course of our history.

Thought is just random babble designed to keep us evolving/surviving/reproducing.  It is not ultimately you or me, we are the witness or awareness to our thoughts.  A thought doesn't exist without a witness to it, just as eye's can't see without the see-er.  A dead body with eyes can't see, but take those eyes out of the dead body and put them into a living body and the eyes can see again.  If you were your thoughts, then you would never have a bad thought about something crazy because you would ultimately be in control.  If you were in control of your thoughts or were your thoughts, then you would never get an annoying songs stuck in your head, because once again, you would be the one in control... but of course we all know this is not so.  They are separate, they are not us, they act on their own without your permission.

Know the difference between you and your thoughts, see the separation, know this to be true....and then you are free.
