nyGeminis DIY Grow box First Grow with Rubbermaid CFLs

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by GC Brae, Dec 5, 2014.

  1. Hello everyone and welcome to my first grow thread!

Pictured below are the contents i purchased to complete my box.

First i covered the entire box in aluminum foil (I'll use mylar the next time around!)

Then i cut out circular cardboard pieces to hang my fixtures on (I'll probably remove these, they were just there to avoid problems with the foil & electric but that's no longer a problem)

Then i spent several hours (A VERY LONG TIME) trying to figure out how electricity works and ended up with 6 CFL lights in a parallel circuit

You know they're in parallel if you can remove some bulbs (unscrew them/turn them off) without the next bulbs turning off

Then I decided to create a carbon filter

I attached the filter to a fan ensuring that any and all exhaust holes were blocked

You can follow this guide to make one just like it: http://www.rollitup.org/t/the-best-diy-ez-walmart-carbon-filter-for-micro-grows-zen-style.101248/

and cut a much smaller intake hole

and installed a small computer fan

I also have a small USB fan that will blow on my veggies

I'm growing using Miracle Gro potting soil and store-bought water. I don't want to hear how MG is bad for the plants, I've read it a thousand times but I've also seen it work perfectly fine!

I germinated my seeds using the paper towel and plate method and I got two seeds germinated so far, I'm hoping for more.

All in all I think its going okay so far, germination took forever.

My box is pretty silent and it won't be running during the day.
Let me know what you think!

  2. Swapped the foil for Mylar! Pics tomorrow

  3. Update: 5 seeds germed still hoping for more! 2 seeds sprouted, the two oldest ones but one of them only has one leaf, I think it may have fallen off when it came through the soil? My Mylar is in and looking good!

  4. Hello? Is this thing even on?

  5. It's totally on. ;) Not bad man. Interested to see what turns out. Looks like you plan to keep them pretty short.

  6.
Don't worry, all topics go slow when they are just started  :D
I don't see any information about the strain you are growing, is it bagseed?

  7. Yep just bag seeds my g-pa has collected over the years, he gave me about 50 of the thousands of seeds he has lol.

  8. That's pretty dope man. Cool gramps. I tried a similar grow but I think my Rubbermaid box was a little smaller. It was too small for the light I ended buying. But I'm down to ride & see how gramps mystery seeds turn out. Good luck & better smoke

So much blue cheeze I don't fuck with ranch no more

  9. Yeah I'm hoping to keep them in the box, maybe I'll lst them. I'm adding a 125 or 250w light soon, interested to see how it'll help

Two youngins poking through, moved them further from the lights toward the middle of the 'cab'. Getting the high power cfl light around Christmas, maybe a little after. So I'm vegging for 20-30 days. I'll keep you all updated. After i get the light any plant that goes into the cab will be on a  12/12 light cycle ONLY.

I have one question, i'm thinking about re-doing my carbon filter, or maybe just adding another one (different design either way) should i push the air through the carbon filter or pull it through the carbon filter? i.e. carbon filter in the box or outside of the box?
    any input would be great

The three cups in the back started showing signs of life, pics tonight! In the end I'm hoping for 2-5 females but one is just fine too!

Switched the lights to 20/4 instead of 24/0 for this week, next Monday starts 18/6 and when I get my new bulb it's on to 12/12. I don't mind that they're not all uniform height any yield from this over 10-15g is a good yield for my first grow, I'm not expecting to get over an ounce but we'll see what happens

Edit: I searched for ~250w cfl grow yields and I should get an ounce or more. But like I said I'm hoping for ~15g (im not selling just looking to get out whatever I put in on the first grow and bud is about 14 a gram where I'm at.

Once I'm done with this I'll add another 250w or 125w cfl and buy an old used cabinet or find one on the side of the road.
Could I use this Rubbermaid and the original 6 cfls to keep mothers (1-3)?
I want to start going perpetual within the next few grows
Let me know what you all think.

  13. Day 4: well I gave my little ones their first full watering I hope they respond well to it. Popping a few more seeds to plant, I want to get 8 solos and I'm hoping for 4 females. 20/4 lighting, not much else to say

Another seed popped, hoping for two more to germinate tomorrow, really hoping to get 4 females out of this first grow! I'm now slowly dropping the lights 30 minutes a day until 12/12

  16. if you only have seedlings you shouldnt have them on a 12/12 cycle. they neeed to be on an 18/6 cycle or a 24/0 the only time you put them in the 12/12 cycle is when your done veg and want to flower your plant should be about 2/3 the size you want your plant to be.
