Update on my 2014 huntin season

  1. A lot of y'all enjoyed my posts from last year about the best season I've ever had. Haven't been on here much at all but here's an update.

Only hunted once during bow season and saw a few deer but nothing in range.

Muzzleloader season I saw quite a few deer, mainly does and a few small bucks. I took a doe on the final day of muzzleloader season for some freezer meat.

Opening day of gun I killed a pretty 8pt. Not huge but a nice 2.5 maybe 3 year old buck. Killed him in front of my deer hounds so I wasn't going to be picky.

Killed 2 does before our rut started.

On November 17th I got off work early and went to a stand I hung over the summer. A 100 acre bean field behind me, a creek to my left and an oak bottom in front and to my right. I got in my stand around 3:30 and at 3:40 I caught movement coming across the creek. I saw that it was a big bodied mature buck so I didn't waste much time making the shot. 50 yards with my 7mm mag was all she wrote. He dropped in his tracks. Jawbone proved him to be a 5.5 year old 6pt . Wish he had more horns but I ain't complaining

Thanks for read, we've got until January 1st here in eastern nc. Still got 2 buck tags and want to take at least one more doe at my home farm.

I'll have my guns, money, and freedom... Y'all can keep y'all's change

  2. Damn this is in North Carolina?! No way. Whats the law for out of towners hunting over there? Ive always wanted to go hunting on the east coast.

  3.
Not sure about North Carolina, but most state game and fish agencies have out of state licenses available; albeit, at a notably higher price usually.  They almost certainly have a website with the info you need.

Guessing though: license, tags, and place to hunt and you should be good to go.

Tags/license are easy to obtain as long as you have a hunters safety certification for your state or over a certain age (parents got me my lifetime license when I was a toddler so I'm not sure the prices).

Not a whole lot of public land, but with some hard work and effort it can and will pay off.

The way our bag limits and seasons are, we are set up for quantity not quality. In the eastern part of the state we get 4 buck tags (can be used for doe tags as well), and 2 doe tags (can go by Walmart and get 2 bonus tags for $10), everywhere else you get 2 buck tags (I do believe. I mostly hunt the eastern part of the state).

Your best bet would be to hire an outfitter or get a lease. Conmans guide service, Cuttawhiskie Creek, and Beechswamp Outfitters are all good, reputable outfitters that will put you on deer. I personally recommend Conmans.

The low country of South Carolina is also a great area as well.

  5. Damn I wish I could bag that many in one year. Oregon only allows you to get one tag and it's for bucks with a fork or bigger. If you want a doe tag you have to enter a drawing for one, I've tried for 4 years now and havent drawn one yet. However, if you do get a doe tag your not allowed to get a buck. You get one chance at one deer a year, thats it!

  6. Thanks!  Lots of good information

4 bucks?! In Minnesota we can only shoot 1 buck per year (gun and bow combined)! And they must have 4 points on at least 1 side. It's not that we are lacking for deer (you can get 4 doe tags), the DNR just doesn't want residents to shoot too many bucks. That way, they can get even MORE non-residents to pay $500.00 to come and shoot our deer. We already gets swarms of them. We do have a large amount of public land (the one thing the DNR did right), so hunting pressure is light. Most private landowners hunt themselves and don't let the outsiders in. There is a 55,000 acre public hunting area about 15 miles away. There is some remote areas and many large bucks there. Used to hunt it almost exclusively, but hunt mostly private land now (gray beard makes it easier to get permission), LOL! Included pictures of 2 kills. Non -typical in 2012 (opening day, my biggest ever) and 10 point in 2013. Shot an 8 point, 17" spread in 2014 (no picture). Well, got to go. Good luck this season, Scout! Phezisica
