Internet cost?

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by Greenunit, Nov 29, 2014.

  1. Hi guys, I just wanted to ask you guys about internet... So I live in a house with 3 others and we have unlimited internet which is okay. Problem is that it's wicked expensive! We're with Rogers and my part is $27CAD which means collectively we're paying about $110 per month for internet! This seems ridiculous to me, but I could just be totally ignorant.

Does anyone have any input? Maybe some suggestions on how to reduce this bill?

  2. If that's just internet, then it's pretty high...if it's a decent bundle it's not too bad...

I'm on Bell, and it's $117/mo for unlimited internet, satellite with 2 receivers and phone with unlimited long distance in Canada and the US...

  3. Just internet, nothing else. No phone, no cable, no satellite.

We have Shaw Hi Speed 10 and it's $55/mo.

It's fast enough for our needs, although they do have faster for more money.

  5.
    Yipes...

    That's nuts...

    Start shopping around...

Might want to check out someone like Distributel or the like...you might give up a few megs in speed, but you'll still be fast enough to stream, and you'll save a bundle...:)

  6. I have DSL, which is added onto my phone bill, and I believe it is $30 extra per month.

The only other option I have here in the boonies is satellite (and I'm not even sure that will work) and from time to time when my DSL goes down I investigate satellite, and I think it's about $75/month. But there is a download limit per month which kinda sucks.

  7. Seems a bit expensive, not excessively so.

In the past when I've shared internet it's generally been around the 20.00cad per person. Though I've never had unlimited - so to me $27 doesn't seem too off base.

  8. Floated the idea past my roomie who has been in charge of the net up until now. First I think we'll try to call Rogers and light a fire under their ass... Tell them we've been shopping around and ask for them to lower the price if they want to keep us as customers.

We used to have limited internet, and went over by a bunch one month so upgraded to unlimited. I recall that month one of my roomies telling me he downloaded a bunch of TV shows/movies only to delete them cause he then decided he didn't actually want to watch them. Grrrr...

Getting kinda sick of this whole "community living" bs. I wish I could live with my gf :(

  9. Psst I love your avi. My favourite mug has that painting on it :)

  10. damn I pay like $45 for high speed

  11.
Lots of things are more expensive in Canada...internet, cell phones, booze, gas...

At least our weed is a good price...:D

  12.
Depending on the exchange rate of the money.

  13.
It's hovering in about the 14% range right now...doesn't account for lots of things being 100% more expensive...

  14.
No it doesn't, but I haven't been to Canada since I was young so I have no clue what's going on there.

Are they still living in igloos?

  15. We've graduated to yurts, actually. Still ride polar bears though! You'll never take away my snowy!

  16. $89.95 for 100Mbps with a 300GB download limit.

    Sucks to be you.

I pay ~35 euros a month and I get a very fast internet connection (my country, Latvia, is ranked among the highest in average internet connection speed), one of the best available in the country, plus in the package comes interactive TV (with all sorts of neat (altho probably basic) functions like recording  & re-watching shows etc.). The internet modem has 3 ports, each gives their own IP, too, so up to 3 computers can be connected to internet (and one being used heavily won't affect the other two). No download/upload limits, I regularly seed torrents on uTorrent as well, put up a dozen terabytes of data already, ISP doesn't care about it at all.

(note the download speed, haha, it always stays around 420-421 range).

    Living the e-dream.

EDIT: And can't complain about uptime. I'm fairly sure I haven't seen more than a few hours of down time this entire year (sometimes the down time is literally seconds, sometimes might be related to drivers or other computer issues), not even the last one.

  18. You lucky bastard.  I'm jealous.

  19.
LOL, I'm on DSL and my DL speed runs between .75 and 1 MPS.

But that's a heluva lot faster than dialup. And I can use the phone while I'm online.

  20. Holy shit. I don't think I've ever seen a 1ms ping. And those speeds are insane.
