Is it time to worry, or is this just genetics?

  1. Both of these are the same strain(Think Different), grown under the exact same conditions(FFOF, 5 gallon containers, 400watt MH). The bigger of the two popped about 6-7 hrs before the smaller one, but at this point it seems to be really outpacing it in its growth. The pots were watered with 2/3 gallon of distilled water right before planting, and I haven't done a "first water" yet, still damp a few inches down. It(the bigger one) is already working on another set of leaves, while the smaller one seems to be having problems getting its second set out. Am I worrying for nothing? Is this normal for two seeds of the same strain?

  2. I wouldn't call it genetics, maybe just traits. One takes after the father, one takes after the mother. I have seen the same thing over and over. All growing conditions almost exactly the same, yet one seed behaves one way, and it's sister behaves another way. You are doing right by watering very, very little in a 5 gal bucket. Pot needs very little water or nutrients.

  3. Genetic drift, variability, mutation..whatever you want to call it is the nature of life...helps living organisms to adapt to a variety of situations....its common..no worries.

  4. These guys have the same issue as yours but they're both healthy. They are the same strain and were planted at the same time but the guy on the left is growing taller while the other is bushier. No seed will be 100% the same

  5. I was always told males will grow a lot quicker then females, not sure if you are using feminized seeds or not

  6. Yes, feminized autos. Doing a lot better today.

  8. You're lucky you even have seedlings. Most people who plant straight into ocean forest end up with dead or burned seedlings. It's fine though man don't trip about it, if that was bothering you you're going to have a long long road ahead.

  9. here is the bigger one

  10. why do you say that? I couldn't find many threads about people burning their plants in OF, unless they fed them too soon. I gave the soil a thorough soaking with plenty of run off before planting.

  11. Maybe they've changed the recipe a little in recent years. I post a lot in the sick plants thread and I see a lot of people come through in ocean forest with burnt seedlings. It's not guaranteed but you should still be weary. Glad to see it worked out for you though.

  12. ah, ok. thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye on them for nute burn. like I said, I flushed the soil out pretty good before i planted, have good drainage, and am not feeding them anything, so if they do burn, maybe you're on to something, and i will switch up to a lighter soil next run.

  13. i think there's nothing to worry about.  no two seeds will ever be the same in my experience.
i'm also in the process of growing 4 feminized skunk #1.  4 plants in 4 pots, same soil, same nutes, same light.... 2 of the seeds sprouted a day later, and the ones of started early kept outpacing the others throughout the whole veg state.  Now in week 3 and the two remain noticeably bigger than the others, but all look healty and show no sign of deficiencies.

  14. Nah. hes right. OF is usually a little too hot for seedlings. Most people plant their seedlings out in the weakest, unfertilized compost at least until a root syatem has developed...it just means repotting but thats no biggie...but if you got some to thrive in it from the start, then better for you....its just a matter of losing a few seedlings to burn over not...good luck with your grow. The independence gained from growing your own will make you never want to depend on others in the future.

  15. welp, they burned after their first water. they have a lot of new growth, but 3 days after the first water, all of the growth that was there at the time burned. Im not sure if the watering caused it(distilled water only), or what. all the new growth looks fine, but the old stuff, not so much. not sure what to do, if anything. like i said, all the new growth is burn free, so maybe they will make it through.

  16. They should be fine.  Younger plants do like tapwater as long as you give it at least 24 hours for the chlorine to evaporate.  It contains a lot of useful nutrients for a young plant.

  17. Leaving the cap off too long will make the ph of the water go nuts. Use purified over distilled. If you want to use tap water it's fine as long as it isn't really hard and the ph comes out around 7. The best way to get the chlorine out is an aquarium pump with an airstone. Bubble a bucket for 3 hours and it's chlorine free and the waters ph won't fluctuate.

  18. I have a well with SUPER hard water. the softener helps, but it is still pretty iron rich. I can get purified water at like 25 cents a gallon at the refill booth in my local grocer, but i wasn't sure if it was better than using distilled.
