Who was your childhood hero?

  1. Just curious about something.  I read once that if you're career matches up with something your childhood hero did, then you probably have a meaningful career yourself.

My childhood hero was Tarzan and I now have a natural resources degree and hang out in the woods on a daily basis doing my job.  I love my job, so I guess it's true for me.

What was your childhood hero and do you have a job/career similar to your hero's?

  3. Leonard da Vinci for as long as I can remember...I am certain I'll have many different careers, but none of those will cover painting in any facet.

  11. My Dad. He owned a very successful contracting company, and I've worked in the trades for most of my life.

Also my uncle, a NYC firefighter. Nothing I've ever done has been so rewarding and I'd like to rejoin the brigade one day in a voluntary role.

Outside my own circle, my heroes were Steve Irwin, the Ninja Turtles, and Tony Hawk.

  18. As a small child, firefighters and veterinarians, and later, a slew of various musicians and skateboarders. Had a few bands as a teenager, obviously none exactly took off. I was once a decent skater, but nowhere near pro material, and didn't live in an area for such a career even if I had been. Now I'm pretty much too beat up to skate long or often.

I later wanted to be a pilot. I tried to join the army at eighteen in hopes of becoming one, was turned down for health reasons (now grateful I was). Being dead broke and having nothing but a GED at the time, I knew I had very little chance of being able to pursue that in civilian world, so that plan quickly fizzled out.

Did various jobs over the next few years, from fast food to roofing to working and later supervising on an assembly line to working as a prison guard. None paid much (aside from being a guard, but it still wasn't anything to write home about), and none was I all that crazy about. At a friend's suggestion, I started volunteering at my local fire department. I loved it instantly, and soon started EMT school in hopes of landing a paying job at a larger department. Out of EMT school, I started working at an ambulance service and got a paying fire job. I absolutely love both, and I was not expecting when I got into fire to love EMS like I do. It was a pleasant surprise :D Later went back to school to get my paramedic license and associates, and am working solely in EMS now. My job may not be the most glorious, but I love it, and have no desire to stop :smoke: Started teaching CPR classes for a friend who owns a business teaching continuing education classes just a week or two ago as well. It's cool, and the pay is good, I'm still getting over the nerves of teaching a large group of people right now though :p
