The long-deceased reggae music legend's name will be used to market Marley Natural, a line of "heirloom Jamaican cannabis strains”

Members of the Marley family have granted a Seattle-based equity firm the rights to use Bob Marley's name in conjunction with a line of cannabis, cannabis-infused products and smoking accessories dubbed Marley Naturals, they announced this week

In an interview on NBC TODAY, Bob's wife Rita, his son Rohan and daughter Cedella say that the brand will represent true "heirloom Jamaican cannabis" in the American market and that they'll bring a corporate sensibility to the world of legal pot.

"This is what the end of prohibition looks like," Brendan Kennedy, the suit-wearing CEO of Privateer Holdings (the same company that owns Leafly), told NBC. "Bob Marley started to push for legalization more than 50 years ago. We're going to help him finish it."

For their part, the Marley family members don't see it as selling out. They've ventured into things like coffee and headphones in recent years using Bob's likeness and images - pot is just the natural next step.
"You can depend on Bob, too," Rita Marley, Bob's wife, told the morning news show. "He's 100 percent behind what is happening. He's happy because this is what we dreamed of."

The moves are part of the Marley family's struggle to gain control of the image of Bob, which has become an often-bootlegged image in part due to Jamaica's lax copyright laws and enforcement of those that do exist.

Kennedy says that they plan to license the brand in medical and recreational cannabis markets sometime in late 2015. It's too early to tell if this is going to be more hype than anything else - as has been the case with a lot of "national" marketing schemes for pot like pot vending machines.

But Kennedy, the slick businessman, says he wants to to be authentic and real.

"This brand can be done in a way that captures the message that can be found in Bob Marley's music," he said. "That's the objective: to capture his essence."

  4. Yeah, not sure...

  5. "He said Marley Natural could one day be a brand to rival Starbucks"

The reason that the parasitical system of capitalism will always thrive and survive.

    Take anything, and commercialise it.
Maybe Marley would have approved, but I have a sneaking suspicion he wouldn't. But hey, he's dead, so who cares what he might have felt or stood for? - his memory can just be turned into an international brand to make money.

  12. To be fair, Bob Marley should have a place in the cannabis scene...I'm sure that he and his lifestyle have introduced untold numbers of people to weed....and not by doing it through a commercial aspect, other than selling his music.....

So let the Marley family get their piece of it...... :smoking:

  15. Bob was a pioneer for many things humanitarian, a champion of rights, a champion of equality and he helped many realize the way cannabis can help many people through life and that it's not "bad".

if you get some time please do some research on what this man has done for soo many people in a time when cannabis was the devils own, according to the real drug dealers, corporate\\governmental america.

to talk down such a man is pretty comical of anyone whom visits a forum for cannabis, since if it wasn't for the those who stood tall during our ugliest times, we would have no cannabis movement to speak of.

for me commercialism is still a part of our society, dissolving eventually, but still here today so why shouldn't such a loving family jump on board for such a great cause, commercialism for the benefit of mankind. unlike commercialism for the beratement of mankind which is what "most" products are these days and yet you all are okay with that. lulz

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds"

Marcus Garvey wrote that but Bob found it to be true so he added it into one of his songs and it still holds true today.

    miss you brother

  16. ^But, isn't it easier to just belittle him and everyone who likes him to feel a little less miserable about our own selves?

  17. Someone on eBay had a bong they were selling and listed it as...Bob marlin American glass water pipe

  18. Inevitable that someone starts releasing commercial strains. There will be celebrities that will resist, but someone will eventually give in. Likely some of the youngest generation, since they're trying to get their name out there and haven't lived in a time where you had to risk your life to get some herb.

Tthere's disadvantages to being the first in line for this kind of thing. For instance, any problems with commercialized weed will be blamed on that first guy, things like schwaggy quality or, god forbid, contamination.

  19.
    so true, so very true.

  20. On the fence about this one.  Can't agree with any side without hearing Bob Marley's view on it.  Although as long as is family is on board with it then its cool I guess.  People who abuse the name will get killed by karma so all is good.  :bongin:
