First grow - critical kush

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Ranu2222, Nov 18, 2014.

  1. Just short of 3 weeks from seed. Light is 300 watt cfl with another 200 watt not seen in the photos below. Looking to switch to either led or another type of cfl soon. Space is about 3 feet wide with 3.5 feet of height. I have more working room upwards if I remove the box top but don't plan on growing that big. Let me know what you guys think.

  5. Update #1

Added more lights and overall feeling good about how things are going. Plants have straightened up after the light addition. Ground level humidity went down to 35% from 50%.

    What problems could arise?!

    Thanks

  6. Don't worry about humidity.  If you have a factory of cannabis and getting an extra 1% is a couple of pounds of weed then it matters, but otherwise they are pretty adaptable.  the main problem is during flowering high humidity can encourage mouldy buds.

Remember that CFLs have two wattage ratings, and the important one is the actual watts used not the equivalent value.  It looks good though.  CFL grows need less nutes and often less watering, because there is less growth from the low light levels.  Take a light touch and you'll do alright.

    Good luck!

  7. Thanks bro! I've been using roots organic to feed them. I've been leaning on the less is better theory.

Feeding these the roots organic player pack products today. Following the online feeding schedule. So far so good, but what do I know! The plan is to flip these in 2.5 weeks . Tips or post of encouragement are welcome.

    Peace!

  10. Looking pretty fine.

Just to raise a point about lights, just look at how not-bright it is at the growing tips of the plant which is actually closest to the light socket.  Even though your CFLs are practically hanging at the same level as your plants, the arrangement of them and the number of them and the lack of a reflector behind them, makes it really difficult to actually get a decent amount of light shining down on your plants.

It is tricky, and it will only get worse as they grow larger and the distance between the top and bottom of the plant grows.  Imagine they are going to be twice as big as they are now, and plan for that situation

I dont understand why people see soo many issues with CFL setups. the beauty with CFLs are their mobility. you dont have enough enough light at the bottom anymore? get another bulb and socket2outlet with a cord and put it underneath. or on the sides or like im doing all around the plant everywhere with 16 lights, maybe more soon, lol. i got so much CFL light going on you have to turn the box off to look in there. and ALL while regulating heat! i cant wait til my plants are in flower mode and can go in there. the veg box they are currently in is similar with less light. i took all the advice and things i read and went overkill. the plants like it so why not? you can get those lights as close as you want as long as you dont touch the lights with plants. someone on here i dont remember who said he had his as close as 3mm away before burning occurred.

After using CFLs, the only other light source i will use for little personal grows is the sun. but only in late spring starts.  B)

  12.
Exactly.  The point is with CFL grows that you do have to add more lights and move them around as the plant grows, and even though starting with 4 bulbs is okay you do eventually need to get at least 8 or as many as 16, like you have.  When you thought it was going to be easy with a couple of bulbs, the idea of getting 16 and plugging them all in your cupboard seems a bit overkill but it isn't at all.

The main issue people have with CFL grows is starting out with just enough light for their seedlings (2-3 bulbs)  and then never upgrading enough for their plants.  It's really easy to have too few, and super hard to have too many!  Whereas with hid lighting you can just set up one light and then only adjust the height for 3 months.

Thank you Howando, for actually getting it! lol

Plus a huge reason why most people who use CFLs do, is because its cheap, my box so far has only cost me like 60 bucks

    2 power strips -$6
    4x4pack CFL bulbs-$20
    8 Socket2outlets-$16
    8 Y Splitters -$16
    Mylar sheet-$3

Everything else i had on hand. keep in mind, i have ZERO stealth measures in place as i do not need them here, otherwise you'd tack on another 100 bucks or so.

So if i was to have bought everything new i'd still only be at like $100, which is still less than just the light setup for a good HID system.

CFLs are not and never will be as efficient as HID, but its FAR cheaper, and you can still get awesome yields from them.

To each his own. I'm not in it for profit of any kind, so CFL is great for me and many others. Goddamn HID fanboys man, i swear. you know whats more effiecient than HID? the Sun at the right time of year.

  14. 5 week update...

All plants have are 1 week into flower.

  15. looking good ranu, you have led now?

  16. Its amazing how much ones opinion can change in a month! i now cant wait for my HID setup! these cfls are not worth the hassle required to get good yields, and potency.

  17. Go by the actual watt not the equivalent. That big bulb is only 85watts. Its a 300 equivalent, but that doesn't matter. I know its done but I wouldn't want to grow a plant with only 85 watts of cfl but say 300 and it sounds fine, even though in my opinion its not. They need to just take the equivalent watt off the box to avoid confusion
