Does weed legalization threaten consumerism?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by Messiah Decoy, Nov 15, 2014.

  1. You can't support the entire economy buying entertainment and munchies.

  2. I have plenty of stoner friends who want big houses and nice cars and successful careers, etc.

I think weed legalization boosts consumerism, in the sense that all these people are now stoned and have the munchies so Doritos and Dr Pepper sales sky rocket. Plus when you're high you can sometimes not make the best judgment calls and end up spending money on stupid shit you didn't really need. *averts eyes*

  3. I made a thread a while ago asking "how much ass, grass, and cash do you need to be satisfied" and most responses were surprisingly modest.

hardly a scientific sample of the general.population

Most stoners iI know in real.life, are EXTREMELY materialistic

I think you want weed to have an influence and are looking for evidence, instead of looking at evidence and realizing weed has no effect.on the matter

    Circular reasoning

  5. Money is a far more addictive and exponentially more satisfying drug than weed. That is all.

  6. How much did Apple make this year?  Microsoft?  (Xbox)  Sony (PS4)??  Yeah they made more than most country's GDP.  Nobody said running the entire country's economy, he said would legalization slow it down or hurt commercialism.....I am saying Far from it.   More money will be spent on this "New" category AND more importantly be taxed helping every thing it touches along the way.

  7. How is money satisfying?

How often do people say they're happy with the income they have?

Sweatshop workers want to make minimum wage.

Wage slaves want to be in the middle class.

The middle class want to be in the upper class.

The upper class want to be millionaires.

    Millionaires want to be billionaires.

It's a pyramid scheme with only those on the very top truly satisfied.

The average stoner on the other hand is happy eating a big bowl of cereal while watching Game of Thrones.

  8. Your evidence is no better than my own.

  9. Lol everything you said is examples of people wanting more money...they are not happy because they want more money...that's addiction at its core, I want more...

the satisfied is only a moment in time...they get money and are satisfied in that moment until the money is gone or just the moment passed and want that satisfied feeling again and go get more money...chasing the dragon

  10. Also not all stoners are people that just wanna sit around watching tv...that's the stereotype..

Do all drinkers beat their wives and commit DUIs? No...

People in america in general love stuff...we always go get stuff and then want the new stuff...legal weed won't change that, people are already smokin weed and spendin money on new stuff...

  11. I'm not arguing against money being addictive.

I'm arguing that money doesn't satisfy.

Yes there are ambitious and greedy stoners but weed does tends to help people appreciate their surroundings better than anything else.

It's easy to see why some accuse weed of draining ambition. People often aren't motivated to seek out more when they be content doing basic forms of recreation.

If it doesn't then nothing does...

Look at it this way, I could be satisfied with a vcr, tube tv and reggie weed...

But I would be much more satisfied with a bluray (or just dvd or hd in general) lcd and some dank...

It takes money to bring that...

You still need to eat and live so you're gonna have to have a job and make money, so now with whatever amount you have you deal with...and can be satisfied but you would always like more...

Money is the same as anything else, if I want it, the more I have the happier I'll be...

Why is the millionaire not satisfied? Because they want a billion...

Why is the dopehead not satisfied? Because they want more dope...

*edit* its much easier to just say, the reason why money is more addicting and more satisfying than anything else is because money makes the world go round...

Most of the things we need in life are obtained with money (clothes, shelter and food)

  14. A millionaire isn't happy making 500 thousand every year, they want a bigger and bigger income.

Most stoners could be happy with a small grow op with their favorite strains.

  15. You caught before the edit, the reason is because money makes the world go round...

More money means more goods and more comfort (as in nicer house, car and clothes)

Most stoners would be happy with that but they still need money to live and grow the weed they want...they don't own water and still have to get it, they don't own land and if they do they bought it or it was bought and given to them (like family)...

Money makes the world go round

  16. Yeah you need money for basic survival, consumerism goes far beyond that creating endless itches that need scratched.

People don't even fully understand their relentless desire for more and more shit.

If everyone was happy with the basics the world would'nt stop turning.

"The world has enough for every man's need but not every man's greed" - Ghandi

  17. Ummm. How is money satisfying? Because it supplies all of our basic needs as well as, even more satisfying, what we want. When I went to work for my grandpa this summer, I would leave feeling great because I had 50 bucks in my pocket every day and I EARNED it. Making my keep felt good. And even if money weren't around I would still have to work to survive. But it is, so, that's how it is. And then I get to spend that money. Holy shit does spending money feel good! Hats, energy drinks, smoking devices, video games, all the frivolous things I don't need, and I am addicted to.

As for all of the following lines except the last two, they come down to one thing. They never have as much as they want. The same can be applied to drugs. People ruin their lives, they get addicted, they can never get enough. I'm an Average Joe stoner and I never have enough. Never enough money either. Always wanting more of both. See the parallels?

The second to last, is irrelevant. The definition of the system this works by has no impact on the point I was trying to make.
And the final one, the average stoner is content with cereal and GoT because they're fucking stoned. And either way it also is irrelevant. My desire to achieve financial success has nothing to do with weed. I wanted to be rich since long before I started smoking and my ambition has not faded since. Money is a drug, a far stronger one than weed because it provides so much more, and weed will never overtake it. Unless of course, weed became a legal currency.

  18. I already said there are ambitious and/or greedy stoners.

My argument is that the average stoner could be content with a small grow op with their favorite strains. Outside of the money needed to cover basic needs and desires they could be perfectly content getting high and enjoying their simple lives.

The trick is noticing what the plant is telling you. "You're already lucky as fuck, just relax and enjoy it".

  19. You're promoting a mindset of complacency and I seriously don't like that. I'm out, before I get angry.

  20. More than likely you never made that kind of money. I have net worth well north of a million in assets more than 1/2 of which is cold hard cash. I made $300k this year due to a rather large bonus. I will retire next year (at 50) and make just under $100k in retirement income with zero debt. Most millionaires look just like you and me. I wear jeans and T-shirts and never wear a suit or tie. I became a millionaire by making $200-$300k a year and I have been thrilled making that. Does it make me happy and satisfied??? What would make you think it wouldn't? I have never worried about bills. My wife and I never argue about money. Not once. I want something I buy it. Truth is I don't waste a bunch of my money. Matter of a fact we are deciding if we will sell our house and either RV or travel the globe. We really don't know/care. There are 1000 people like me to every warren Buffett workaholic.

Anyone that says money is not satisfying never had any.
