What's up fellas...long time no see. Hope everybody is well.

This is a straight up frankenstein grow with random stuff that have accumulated over the years. It is also my first grow in a couple of years, so I'm excited to get back into the game.

-Strain is SSSDH x Casey Jones (Sour Hazy Jones) from OJD/CSG. 11 seeds soaking, hoping for 6 females if all goes well  (update: only 4 broke surface, must have been old stock. Added a few beans to the mix, see below.)

    Additionally:

-2 Rainbow Jones (GDP x Casey) - fem
-2 Strawberries n Creme (Straw Cough x The White) - fem
    -3 Cheesedog (reg)

-some sort of Sunhut(?) tent from the good ol days... Actual usable interior space = 52"(L)x34"(D)x72"(H). Going to be a tight squeeze but I'll make it work.

-2x 400w (one switchable and one HPS, have not decided on 1 MH  + 1 HPS or both HPS yet, any thoughts are welcome and appreciated)

-Going for bare bulb with a simple hanging mechanism a la the little 400w torture chamber grow I did, one stacked a bit higher than the other...seeds starting under plain fluoros with hood and then to a horizontal 150w hps until they are a couple of nodes high, then 1 of the 2 400w vertical lights go on until they have reached 4-5 nodes. Around the time they are flipped the second light will go on and the full 800w will be there for the end of veg going into flower.  I have always vegged horizontally for my vert grows in the past so I'm curious if this is the way to go or not, particularly with these stretchy genetics

-Fine coco, tap water, canna A, canna B, rhizotonic, nothing else for nutes unless corrective action is necessary

-Looking at about a month veg before the flip and will probably end up with a final home in 4gal bags, although if I end up with fewer females than the planned 6 I may go up a bit in size and see where that gets me

-Basic static screen for SCROG - not enough room for the modular screens I might like. I may also consider a variation on my ridiculous zip tie torture, I mean training, seen in the aforementioned 400w vert thread I made, as that would allow me the ability to rotate the plants and remove them for feeding/photos/etc.

-This is a stupid simple grow and my goal is to find some killer phenos from both sides and hopefully end up with at least one that is my ideal head stash and at least one big time (Casey-leaning?) producer would be ideal as well. No tiered/stadium setup or anything fancy by any means, just some hopefully chunky bitches in bags hanging out around a couple of lights.

Tentative goal is .75 g/watt although I hope to shatter that (all depends on how well I can dial this in throughout the first run)...should be looking at roughly 600g dry if all goes well.

As of 11/13/2014 I have 4 two-day-old Sour Hazy Jones seedlings and all the other beans have been soaking for 36 hours and have cracked with nice healthy tails. They will be planted today after work into rapid rooters in coco under a humi-dome...I'll get some pics when there is actually something to look at.

Will veg roughly a month...going from solo cups to 2gal bags to the final 4gal resting place...hoping for 6 females but I can work with 4-5 if it comes down to it.

  2. Can you not edit the initial post in a grow journal? WTF? Trying to change some info on genetics I have now and change the title as well. Any help, mods?

  3. Few more from today...the second largest coco got two feedings in 24 hours and seems to be loving it, yellowing new growth is on its way out it appears. Gonna up to EC soon I think.....

I know, I know, nobody gives a shit until things start flowering. Oh well, here's some more stuff:

This is the basic ghetto cab setup at the moment. All I'm waiting for is the seedlings under the T5HO to catch up a bit so I can throw everything under the 400w to veg horizontally until I can sex (or in the case of the fem beans, until they're where I want them). At that point, the 10 C99 BX1 that are soaking now and will be planted on the 11th will take over that spot under the T5s, etc. etc.

That light is hanging higher in the photo than it is currently so I could get a better photo, with the fan blowing and air exchange at 100% along with cool passive fresh air intake I actually have it within about 10 inches of the plants with a 73F canopy level for those and a 70F canopy temp for the seedlings. Can't wait to get these C99 that are soaking in the ground, so excited to run these after years of wanting to. Also hoping that I get at least one good Casey expression and one good SSSDH expression from the 6 SHJ and also hoping at least one of those are females, but I'd be happy with a killer Casey male too.

Trying to decide if I want to just use my dial-a-watt on 50 or 75% for the 400w digi and run the HPS for horizontal veg until I can sex them and then put them in their respective corner to finish vegging vertically?

I'll post more info about what my process going forward will be  a bit later, lots of meetings today, all the bigwigs in town   :hide:

  5. I know nobody gives a shit until some greasy flowers start popping up but I'll keep this going anyways.....

New mixes as of last night's feeding:

Coco: 5.7pH @ 1.4 EC  (seems pretty hot but they seemed to love it as of this morning? I guess they are fairly well along regardless of how stunted their growth has been...) -- feeding 10ml Canna A, 10ml Canna B, 5ml CalMag, 20ml Rhizotonic (gallon)

Light Warrior mix: 6.7pH @ .3 EC -- feeding plain water with 10ml Rhizotonic only currently

All 6 SHJ spent the night underneath (next to?) a single hanging bare 400w HPS just to stress test for temp and humidity in the tent itself...wasn't great news. Even with fresh cold air passively flowing into the room via a cracked window I'm at 82F when the tent is all sealed up. I don't know how things are going to work with another 400w in that tent, but I'll figure something out. That active intake via the window thing I drew out above might actually be something I need to implement at this rate. I'm using a 300-something cfm 6" fan and I guess I could upgrade to an 8" but this tent is meant for 6" max and I'd have to get a reducer, so I feel like it wouldn't really help.

Anyways, loads of new pics because I'm annoying.

Also, now that I feel like I have a handle on early growth in coco, I'm really reconsidering using anything but coco for starting the C99s that are still soaking. I don't want to fuck things up like before but the difference in growth in the SHJs has been insane, which I already knew I guess. And to be fair, the two in the LW mix were stunted already and then transplanted, but still -- insane growth, that's what got me to coco in the first place. Decisions, decisions....

The SHJ in the solo cups are very much rootbound and are going in 1gal bags today I think....

Current thoughts are to veg the SHJ another couple of weeks, sex, and then flower whatever females remain in their 1gal bags in the inner circle. By that point I should have a nice batch of C99s coming into their own and getting close to transplanting to their final 2gal resting place, so should keep the tent from getting too wild. Especially if I keep those SHJ from vegging too much as I hear they stretch like crazy, and since I'm not topping or doing any real training so I can observe the natural growth for this first run, I'm just hoping for a bit of luck in that department really. Still don't know what I'm going to do until I get a final female count...hoping there are enough that I can take all these random freebies and stick them in another tent so as not to muck up my C99/SHJ hunt.

Anyways, sorry to be so long-winded with so little to say as per usual

  6. I know there really isn't much to see here yet and I keep spamming photos of basically nothing but I really missed growing, guys. My weight bench and exercise equipment is located in the room where my tent is, so my morning routine is to do my lifting and  snap a photo or feed something in between sets while listening to something uplifting. Really helps relax me and prepare me for battle at work all day. So... I'm going to keep posting  near-daily updates even though they don't show much because it's therapeutic for me and I'm a high-stress dude who could use the drop in blood pressure. Just throwing that out there.

One of the SHJ seems pretty picky about feeding and is getting the "butterfly effect" and some odd clawing near the new growth, but that may have been a bit of light burn from the HPS being too close the other night. Meanwhile, the biggest coco SHJ has a wonderful structure and I can't decide whether I would be happier with that being a female or a male, as I really want to be able to get at least one viable male from the SHJ camp for future chucking. They are all currently underneath a 400w hortilux MH dialed down to 200w and I went ahead  and switched to 20/4 for veg to help with the heat a bit until I figure that out.

For the record, transplanting all SHJ after work into 1gal bags (gonna try these fabric ones for this grow instead of plastic) and going to plant all of the seeds I have left, 12 total -- 10 C99 BX1 and a couple of fem freebies, Caramelo and Cheese Candy, not sure who  hacked those together. I decided that only 5 of the C99 will be placed in Light Warrior and the other 5 + the 2 freebies will go straight in coco using LSWM's method from earlier in this thread. Will report back on findings soon! Can't wait to take all these random bs freebies and throw them in the other room once I know for a fact I have what I need from the real strains in the tent.

Anyways, couple quick pics from this morning...the seedlings in the LW look like they need something I'm not giving them. Any thoughts?

  7. Well, pH meter decided to take a shit right after I mixed 2gal of solution for the larger coco plants (5.8pH, 1.5EC) and right before I mixed the seedling solution.  I wasn't comfortable feeding such a hot solution to new seeds (especially since they already don't seem very vigorous as it is), so I went ahead and put the two freebies in coco and used LSWM's method exactly as he described with that 1.5EC solution. Not sure how that will go but they both had the most vigor of the group and the Cheese Candy had a 3/4" tail when it went in, so if they don't make it above surface it was definitely too hot...lol. The 10 C99 just went into LW with a very light mix of plain water and rhizotonic which should have mixed right at 6.5 pH, only reason I included it in the solution reallyw.  Ordering a new meter today, thankfully I was able to get the 2gal of coco solution mixed before it died so I'm good for feedings on everything until then.

Coco plants were looking a little ugly after being fed way at like 1.8EC and close to 5.6pH a couple times, but even after a single watering to 20% runoff overnight they already look much better. Fed them again this morning and decided against transplant until I sex them...I had forgotten that I'm working with coco and I can go a lot further with a solo cup of coco than I can a solo cup of soil.

Anyways, everything seems fine otherwise, seedlings were showing signs of overwatering which I think was a result of being too cold for a couple of days after being too warm for a coupel of days preceding it. THey are  springing back now that I have environmental issues worked out. Sitting at 75F 35% humidity at lights on, currently on 20/4 veg under a vertical 400w MH (haven't had a chance to hang a reflector, normally I would veg horizontally at least until sexing) with the seedlings under the 4 light T5H0. It is literally freezing out here right now so I'm trying to figure out a schedule for my fan to keep things from getting too cold and dry while I'm at work. Thankfully my office is only a couple miles from my house so I'm not far away if I need to go fix something.

Anyways, quick pics from this AM, more to come soon:

The biggest coco specimen, assuming he's a male judging by his vigor but I've been surprised in the past...guessing  this is a SSSDH leaning pheno and the wider, stouter plants are the casey-leaning ones? Not super familiar with either parent...

This guy in particular is weird as hell, this was the runt that was missing leaves since day one and it has been growing very oddly to say the least. Has a lot of the same weird clawing and burning (?) showing on the other larger, more nute-sensitive coco plant, also pictured below...

btw, that funky SHJ I showed above (the largest one) is throwing pistils, and I think I spied a staminate on the other big 8-finger one, which is cool with me...I want a couple of interesting males. Never chucked any pollen entirely on my own before and I anticipate I'll make some mistakes on my first solo run, so for this first crop I'd like to not even introduce pollen into the equation until I get an initial harvest, then go from there. I still have to figure out how to safely keep a male chamber, may go with Marlo's cool little contraption he posted up in the rubbermaid joint. Any thoughts on that are welcome as always.

Really glad that the first confirmed female is that bushy bitch, should be plenty of healthy clones of what looks like a SSSDH pheno with the nice thin leaves and great branchy structure. Other four are still young or stunted enough to not have any answers yet, but I'm guessing that I have a couple more girls that are presumably more casey leaning judging by the photos of TCB's casey next to the leaves I'm seeing on these. Nothing to do tonight, hanging at home with the girl, so I'll post pics later and bore you guys even further

Looking pretty good this AM...the two dudes hanging out off to the side, LWSM's coco seedlings are insanely huge compared to their brethren (one more so than the other) and just received their very first light feeding last night, and the formerly fucked up coco transplants are springing back quickly. Oh, and the Rainbow Jones (back left corner, little stubby bastard) looks weird as hell and I don't think I've ever seen anything grow the way this has so far. Is that a GDP trait that I'm seeing shining through here or what?

Seriously stuck on how I want to proceed with the C99 in the LW. Can't afford to lose any more, but I also don't feel like I can justify losing any more time either, and they're just so behind the coco seedlings that it is disheartening. I'm seriously about to just hope for the best and rip the fuckers out and stick them in some coco, this light warrior shit is for the birds.

Currently under the MH dialed down to 300w and loving it, will bump it up once I get everybody settled.

So...not to sound like a diva or anything, and I know that this thread isn't very interesting yet...but is anybody even reading this? If not, I'm probably not going to keep posting updates on GC, as this seems to not be getting a lot of views and I would love to have an ongoing discussion in this thread with other coco/vertical growers to swap tips.

    1/3 update:

Here we are with the stars of the thread...the Sour Hazy Jones. The short, bushy one is a confirmed female and the rootbound bastard at the far right (see fifth pic) is a confirmed male, everything else is taking its sweet ass time to decide. I'm putting that male through absolute hell and he is loving every second of it, and he stinks like the broad-leafed plant with a garlic, rotten scent.

The C99 seedlings...the one in the solo cup that came back to life is probably due for its first watering in a day or two. Thanks again to LWSM for his killer coco seed starting method, it is wonderfully simple and effective and I have also been using a slightly modified version for coco transplants with great success as well.

i know how to delete a thread.. but i'm not telling cause i wanna see your grow finish! :p

  12. Thanks man...I had a slight security scare yesterday so I was trying to clean up my online presence a bit. Figured if nobody was reading this one it wouldn't be a big deal to get rid of it. Turns out the issue I thought I had didn't exist, so I'll keep posting up progress as I go. Take it easy.

I have had to come to terms with something upon further reflection. I have 3 confirmed Sour Hazy Jones females and 7 feminized plants growing, so that's 10 confirmed females as of right now. Even if all 3 of the Cheeze n Chaze are males and the other 2 unsexed SHJ plants are as well, I've already got a jungle on my hands trying to grow so many different strains with varying stretch, nute requirements, and statures. And that's if you completely ignore the 5 C99 seedlings that are trucking along as we speak...so clearly I need to think about keeping some in veg in one tent with the C99 until a quick finisher opens a spot up in the flowering tent and cycle it in. Unfortunately, having never run any of these genetics, I'm going to have to make that decision without any actual knowledge or info to go on, so I could very well be wrong and end up with a shitty vert canopy (which I already have to expect, realistically) and some bunk closet hack herb from one of the fem seeds. ALL of the CSG gear will be flowered, so that's going to be (so far) 3 Sour Hazy Jones, 2 Strawberries & Cream, and 1 Rainbow Jones along with whatever female Cheeze n Chaze I end up with. I have some big decisions to make about how many plants are actually going to be flowering in the next 10 days, which is when I plan on flipping.

edit- routine maintenance led me to discover female preflowers on all of the remaining Sour Hazy Jones plants. So fuck, that kinda sucks, really wanted more males to work with...now I've got 5 to the 1 lone dude in the corner. Either way, this changes my plans considerably and I think I will now be focusing this initial run on the 5 SHJ to find my keeper along with the other 6 CSG plants (3x Cheeze n Chaze, 2x Strawberries n Cream, 1 Rainbow Jones) and then let the rest of the plants keep on vegging with the C99 in the other tent. more updates as they come

Let's see how many images GC lets you put in one post..... I'll label these later, some are a little out of order as well, but this is now strictly a Connoisseur Genetics gear thread. I will be flowering 5 Sour Hazy Jones, 2 Strawberries and Cream, 1 Rainbow Jones, and up to 3 Cheeze n Chaze (currently unsexed)

This is a Sour Hazy Jones, we'll call her #1 for the sake of simplicity's sake from here on out. This one has an incredibly awesome structure for what I'm trying to accomplish and I can already tell this one is going to blow up.

This is the super stinky one with the very broad leaves (comparatively speaking) that are more reminiscent of an indica leaning cross than the very sativa cross that SHJ is to the best of my knowledge. Interested to know what expression I'm seeing in this one and from what influence in the genetic background...

This was the one that threw pistils at me right away, like 3 or 4 weeks into veg. She also grew very oddly and essentially "auto-topped" herself, and I then topped one side and FIMed the other to see which one it took to. Well, it seemed to like both just fine, but now it's a little tight bush monster and I need to get this thing cleaned up for sure.

This is one of the ones that was a Light Warrior to coco transplant and it's a bit behind the others, but I'm thinking it might be the same pheno as #1 above based on the structure and the stem rub, just not quite as developed as #1 which was coco from day one

Top down views of everything else (you see those C99 BX1s percolating right?) + the 3 CnC (all of these but the CnC are soon to be exiled back to the other tent for a timeout, I can't run all this shit at once, I'm not that crazy!)

And another top down of everybody all together in the tent for one last time...tomorrow (or possibly day after) everything but the CSG gear gets put in the veg tent on the other side of the room.

Quick group shot from this AM...everything but the little 4" pots is getting flowered in a couple of weeks max. Thinking about leaving everybody in 1gal, I want to get these jamming out and well on their way so I have time before it gets warm to cycle in those C99 and the rest of the feminized plants. This isn't a perpetual grow, so after it hits May or so everything is getting put up until the fall.

FYI, the 4x4 tent is now a single 600w vertical scrog, put the screen in yesterday. I culled a Sour Hazy Jones (I think #4, I'll have to go back and look but it was the small, droopy one that wasn't vigorous at all) and after placing everything in the 4x4 realized that I only have room for the four remaining Sour Hazy Jones and I went with the 3 Cheese n Chaze because I figured they more closely matched the other plants in terms of structure. I have some 2gal bags but not enough time to throw them in there before I want to start flowering so they're just going to stay in 1gals this run.  I still have the 400w MH with the reflector hanging but I'm going to hang the 600w  Saturday and snag some twist-ties so I can start tying these bitches to the screen.

As for the two Strawberries and Cream and the Rainbow Jones...those along with the Grape OG, Cheese, and Caramelo as well as the 5 unsexed C99 BX1 seedlings will all be stuck under the 400w MH for the entire grow. This one will be a standard horizontal grow, possibly with a screen but more than likely I'll let them run, correct them with basic training along the way, and check out their structures this run.  I've never used a daylight spectrum bulb on its own to flower, so I'm curious to see what difference in results I get with the horti MH versus the HPS. Another reason I'm using the MH is that I'm hoping to limit stretch and try to contain the canopy in less space than the tent actually allows for as the 400w doesn't really have enough of a footprint to cover the entire area.

I'll be taking cuts the first couple of weeks of flower as I clean up the canopy a bit, but there is a good chance these clones will be going into stasis in the fridge for a couple of months to reduce the number of plants I have going at once as this isn't a perpetual grow at the current time. I intend to take the best-suited SHJ and C&C cuts and throw them outside this year in a real basic organic soil mix and I will of course run my favorites again in the fall and winter.

    More pics tomorrow most likely...

This is my first experience with anything Casey, I'm pleased so far. Of course, with CSG you can't go wrong and I'm glad to have a bunch of their stuff for this run. Can't wait to see what it does in flower.

I see you highlighted the word flower -- I take it you've never taken clones in flower before? I think some people call it "monster cropping" (please don't quote me on that -- just something I've heard) but the basic idea is that for my style of growing, I tend to clean up the canopy a lot in the first couple of weeks of flower, particularly if I'm doing a vertical scrog. In doing this I take away most of the lower branches from the plants. If you snag them in the first couple of weeks you can get reasonably fast rooting clones that may need to be "revegged" for a week or two but otherwise should be perfectly normal.

I don't run perpetual grows anymore so I don't need to be able to root clones right away (the same reason I use the "stasis" method to refrigerate clones for several weeks until I root and grow them), so that doesn't inconvenience me. And in taking the lower branches you tend to promote very vigorous growth in the remaining branches, so you end up with very little "larf" and popcorn bud.

Take it easy man, thanks for posting.

  19. I think I managed to get too high. Are you asking about the stasis thing? That would make a lot more sense, and sorry I did not go into more detail. I'm not an expert so the best I can do is provide the information I have been going off of for many years, paraphrased as such:

Nice looking gals over all but the mutant stuff looks to me like mosaic virus symptoms. Most plants when dialed in don't get effected really mostly jut weird growth that's it. They usually pop out of it and looks like your plants have now that they are older.
