How Gaming Ruined my life

  1. Today I want to make a confession..

My life has been completely ruined by video games. It all started at the age of 10.
I remember the day clearly. My mom and dad had bought me an nintentdo because they thaught it would be a fun thing to give for Christmas .
I must say  that it was fun but It was not a good idea at all and me being a kid back then didn't realize this at all.. Every day after that I immediately  lost myself completely in the virtual world.
For years after that, video games became my obsession.
I used to stay on it for hours every single day, whenever I had free time form school or not. My grades  weren't the best because it didn't give a fuck about it.

I had to get all the new consoles and new games and it was destroying me.
I remember my parents hiding the power plug of my xbox just so I wouldn't go on it.
I remember literally going insane just for this silly thing. Xbox became my life along with the friends I had online.

I never wanted to go  outside , and I always tried to make some excuse for myself that I can't. I forgot to spend time with my family and have ruined my Social Life. Games were more important than friends or even my own family which is literally insane if you think about it.  I even  Lost the opportunity to be independent and therefore I'm still living with my parents.

I have no idea what I want to become or where life will bring me but this is the end of a chapter I never want to go back to. Videogames are fun but you need to realise when to put the controller down.

There is so much more to life then video games and I hope that the people who read this till the end have learned something about my story and can put themselfes into my situation and show some support because gaming can be an addiction and every form of addiction is bad.

  2. I think there was a reason as to why you decided to become addicted and evolve yourself so deeply into video games.

What was your real issue with life that caused you to abandon it and play games instead, escaping reality?

I know games have been a positive "Coping" method for my childhood, as they call it.

  3. admitting your problem is the first step towards change.  keep going!

  4. So you joined grasscity to tell us this?

  5. Same here dude.. I recently completely gave up video games and am now a drummer in a band! So much more fun then playing Xbox 24/7.. Listen dude, if you were into it that much it shows that when you like something you can really get into it, the more time spent the better you get.. Find something you really enjoy and will make your life worth living, and put a shitload of time into that.. Doesn't it feel good to realize this? Get out of your shell and go make something of yourself! :) And ALWAYS make sure that you enjoy what your doing.

  6. Video games didn't ruin your life, you did. That is, the choices you made ruined your life. It's easy to blame something else like drugs, parents, games, etc but in the end, it was all you. No one forced you.

That being said, your life's not ruined at all, and it's time to focus on new/ efficient ventures in your life. Make it happen instead of finding an output to lay blame on to. Only you can, and you owe it to yourself.

And sorry if this came off harsh or cruel but i know where you are coming from and so do many, many other people and these are some revelations i've personally realized in recent times of this stage in my life.

So good luck friend, make goals and work hard for whatever it is you want to accomplish.

  7. *puts down phone*

    *turns on skyrim*

  8. This brings up an old idea I have always bounced around in my head. What actually defines a "good life" Wealth? Family? Relationships? Friends? I honestly think for every person it's different, but we live in a world where we are lead to believe a good life is the same for everyone. Don't get something for no other reason than you want to. If you want to sit in front of a TV on video games until the day you die and this makes you happy. By all means go ahead. If you want time with friends and family. Make that time.

    Short Version:
    Do what makes you happy
Not what others want you to do.

    Side Note:
Why did you join GC to tell us this?
Only theory is you are another user who doesn't want to be judged.

  9. Not nearly the same but I have a porn game obsession.

  10. you sound like a quitter to me

  11. Meh, WoW 4 Life.

  12. Obviously gaming can be a harmful addiction if overdone, but that applies to anything. Video games are not worse in principle than any other hobby.

  13. Two words:

    Escape Artist

  14. sounds like your just a loser who wants to blame.your problems.on something else

Should have been a pro gamer.  If I was just 10-15 years younger I would be a professional gamer.  Lots of money in gaming nowadays.

    OP is a n00b.

  18. You aren't playing the right games. Play dark souls

  19. video games were a coping mechanism during my childhood.its been about 6 years since I realized that I dove headlong into gaming as an escape from my own messed up realities. that said I still sit down and play games for hours, but I don't hide from the world in a screen like I used to.

  20. Videogames enhanced my reflexes, intelligence, spatial memory, and inspired me to become a better artist in many mediums.

The trick is to play the ones that arent call of duty, halo, or world of warcraft.
