Is transplanting necessary?

  1. If you germinate a seedling or take a clone, why can't you just put them straight in a 3 or 5 gallon planter? Is it just so you can see the root system is healthy? It seems like an awful lot of stress for the plant, and I just don't understand the purpose.

  2. You can plant a seedling or rooted clone in their final home, I do it all the time.

The main benefit of using smaller pots and transplanting is because it's much easier to overwater a tiny plant in a big pot.

  3. I'm a new grower and a little bit ago I planted a seedling in its final 5 gallon pot but ended up overwatering it and creating a beautiful environment for thrips/gnats to kill my plant. Be careful!

  4. Transplanting is not really a big deal, just take your time and dont freak out :p

  5. Putting lots of seedlings into large containers isn't the best idea, bc if many turn out to be male you've wasted a lot of soil.

When I do a seed run, I plant the seeds in 24 oz plastic cups. Then into 1.5 gallon containers to be vegged and sexed. Once they're identified as female I up-pot them into 5 or 7 gallon smart pots.

For clones, putting them right into their flowering pot once they're rooted is ideal. You could put them in smaller containers too though and transplant them a little bit before bloom. Up-potting really isn't very stressful to the plant if you know what you're doing.

  6. No, transplanting isn't necessary for the plant to be healthy. As mentioned, most people that screw up planting in a large container do so by watering too frequently while the plants are small.

  7. your question is pretty much answered

pots that are too big means the roots cannot reach all the soil and absorb the water/nutrients. this leads to having a muddy soil at the bottom of your container and a build up of nutrients.

once the roots reach this mud they rot and die  with no oxygen and too much nutes.

it also saves you on space, cost of nutrients, etc by having them in pots proportional to their size.

the small amount of time it takes to transplant a few times is worth it to avoid the risks and disadvantages.

  8. I get feminized seeds and just bung 'em into 11l containers straight away. Not immune to errors though, check the journal below...
