Hello, my name is Joshua Pettey, I live in southern california. I make music to clear my mind, and I taught myself to produce decent sounding beats without any prior knowledge of music creation or music theory in about two years. Heres my.. well.. backstory i guess.. im faded and I can type a lot lol...so If you wanna do the TLDR of this lengthy faded forum post.. just go skip to the end and view my SC link :^) I started smoking bud as an escape from SSRIs. I used SSRIs for anti-anxiety since i have GAD and experience panic attacks regularly, but I also used them to deal with the depression that comes along with those kinds of things. There are a lot of side effects with SSRIs, and they were ruining my life (nausea, impotency, bullshit)... so I quit them and started smoking weed through a dealer to try it out.. i fell in love with it, got a recommendation for medical bud, and started smoking every day starting about 2 and a half years ago. Around the same time a friend of mine linked me some of these short little clips of beats he was working on over this old myspace link, and I expressed to him how much I wanted to learn music production and how he himself was very talented and should work on music more often. Over the following weeks I started looking into stuff, I downloaded FL studio and started messing around,tinkering with it. My friend that got me into it was a god among men and taught me the basics through Skype video chat sessions and file sharing. I had no idea of how time was measured in music and what a time signature was.. i just listened and did trial and error. At the start all my shit sounded pretty bad and I pretty much had to blaze a bowl after I made anything because I was just depressed with how shitty it sounded... but after a few weeks I was seeing fleshed out 32 measure loops with rhythm, bass, harmony, lead, etc. I eventually got fed up with not knowing the details of what I was doing..and from then on I started dedicating my free time to better understanding..well...everything there is to understand about electronic music production(switched my DAW to Ableton Live too...that was a lot to understand lol) and music theory....i still have a shit ton to learn(which im thankful for.. because I am having a fucking blast learning lol). My piano playing is pretty weak since I had never played one before this.. but through enough trial and error, and crazy creative ideas that stemmed from smoking a lot of weed, I am finally feeling proud(ish) of the stuff im making. Sorry for the long drawn out intoxicated explanation. But im a very nervous person and didnt feel comfortable linking my shit(and a lot of the older stuff is well....shit) without explaining my musical background i guess.
