Is my seedling growing kind of slow?

Whats up fellas... LOONG time since I've been on this site. I've yet had a grow since the last time I was on here more than a year ago.

Anyways... I've started a new grow. This time it's a bubbleponics setup in a closet grow.

It's been 4 days. Yesterday I gave it nutes for the first time about 1/4 of the recommendation by General Hydroponics trio+Cal/MAg. PH 5.5 ppm of 90.

I wonder about the light though. Right now I am using a single 220V/55W CFL putting out 3582 lumens.
There is a dome reflector, which I almost have the seedling in. *See pic for details*

Inside the dome it's about 88f degrees and the closet is at around 75f-79f degrees. Water temp is around 65-70 degrees (I keep frozen water bottles inside of it.)

Ventilation is another small concern. In my closet I have dixie cup size round holes at the bottom- for intake, and a small dinky computer fan upper left corner of closet.

The light is on 24 hours at the moment and I thought after one week I will switch over to 18/6.

Judging by the picture and all the description about my setup I have just provided, do you guys think my seedling is off to a slow start? Or does this look normal for 4 days?

Should I upgrade to a bigger light soon or work on my ventilation? and get the dome further away from the seedling?

If I can get any suggestions or advice I'd really appreciate it!

  2. Your seedling looks just fine. I'd water with plain RO water for a little while longer, at least until you have another set of nodes.

The lighting and ventilation issue go hand in hand. Yes, you should upgrade your lighting. At least add more cfl's, somewhere around 200w would be my minimum. Or you can step up to HID, but if you do you will definitely need to upgrade your ventilation to cool your lighting.

  3. Your seedling looks healthy and your setup is very nice and clean. Ventilation won't harm your plants to much as long as you have some sort of fan pointing at a little open area. Trust me put your hand over it you'll be surprised how much air blows out of a small opening

  4. Alright cool! Thanks guys.

My only concern was that it was growing too slow. My last grow I started off seedlings w 400W MH and those suckers blew up so fast in one week, but I felt it was a bit unnecessary for such small seedlings.

I figured this time I would start off w less intensity light for veg, scrog, and upgrade to 600 or 1000W HPS for flowering.

I'm working on getting a new vent system shortly.

  5. hi SN,

Careful with the nutes! I would wait. I burned my babies with the Flora series at a very dilute strength! Anyway, good luck with your grow!

Invest in a T5. Those are the best for vegging in my opinion. They let off little heat and don't use as much power as a 400w MH. The Quantum Badboy T5 is a little pricey but top of the line. For flowering, I go all out with 1000's if you can control the heat. I can pull a gram per watt in my room with 1000w's. For flowering, the more light the better. In a closet, controlling the heat from one 1000 is going to be tough unless you get an air-cooled hood and vent the heat out of the room so the 600w is probably your best bet. And you'll still need an air-cooled hood for that but the heat won't be as bad as a 1000 lol

Put your hand over your plant. If the light feels hot on the back of your hand, it's too hot for your plants. The plant canopy should be in the range of 72-76 degrees. Also, make sure you have a fan oscillating on the plants. It will keep them cooler and makes the stems grow stronger to support the plants growth. If not, they'll get lanky and flop over lol I also see you have a digital thermometer in the corner. You should put that near your plants where the light hits it so you can see how hot the plants are getting and not so much the room.

  8. Correct me if im wrong, but isn't that way to early to be adding nutrients to water? Other than a drop or two of Grow/super thrive? The coloytoldon should have enough to sustain the seedlings food needs for the first few weeks, nutrients shouldn't be added untill there are 4 sets of true leaves

Ive read Seedlings are good for about 2 weeks with nothing but a grow medium and water.

Generally after that you don't want them to get any full strength nutes for at least a few weeks.

  10. 2 weeks is too long in my opinion. I was told 2 weeks and I ended up having deficiencies 7-10 days in.

Okay, well I heard the same thing. And I was gonna wait 2 weeks, however the growth rate of my seedling seemed slow that I was willing to try adding a very small amount of nutes to give it a "Kick start."

You see, the last grow I started off my seedlings with a 400w mh HID. Those suckers blew up right before my eyes. I could almost literally see them growing with such high intensity light.

This time I decided to start with a 150w CFL. The growth rate was not what I was expecting, so that explains the early nutrient feeding.

The question is: Do I give it 1/4 nutes again? Add a little more nutes? Or add nothing but PH'd water?

Thanks to all you for the support.

There's a problem with the leaves folding downward. I have posted a new thread about this problem.

  12. Nothing but PHed water, if u wana add anything try a few drops of SuperThrive, it looks very dark, id let it flush with only water for now
