Are there things you refuse to buy/eat for ethical reasons?

Discussion in 'General' started by The Stud, Sep 29, 2014.

  1. Boicotting certain wares because they are from Israel? Stop eating Nutella cause they still use palm oil in it?

What and why? Are you a serial boycotter? Or an occasional boycotter? What do you think about boycotting? Are they effective, or mostly futile attempts?

I'm guilty! I love nutella, so this is hard for me.. I was having an intimate moment with a jar of nutella at the store earlier, I whispered words of goodbye before I put it back on the shelf. Untill next time old friend.

  4. holy shit I had no clue about palm oil.  Thanks for enlightening me.

I'm a vegetarian.  Partly for ethical reasons, partly for health reasons.

  8. @[member="D_Urbmon"] Idk if you were serious or not lol

I wish I could double-like this. Two thumbs up.

This is something that has been bothering me, there is no ethical 'phone company', or electronics in general as far as I'm aware at least. There should have been, I don't know how economic it would be, people would have to pay much more for these products :/

    It's a vegetable oil

The use of palm oil in food products has attracted the concern of environmental activist groups; the high oil yield of the trees has encouraged wider cultivation, leading to the clearing of forests in parts of Indonesia in order to make space for oil-palm monoculture. This has resulted in significant acreage losses of the natural habitat of the orangutan, of which both species are endangered; one species in particular, the Sumatran orangutan, has been listed as "critically endangered".[13] In 2004, theRoundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was formed to work with the palm oil industry to address these concerns.[14] Additionally, in 1992, in response to concerns about deforestation, the Malaysian Government pledged to limit the expansion of palm oil plantations by retaining a minimum of half the nation's land as forest cover.[15][16] Palm oil counts among the products with the highest ecological damage.[17]

  9. Well I refuse to get a facebook for ethical reasons, does that count?

Oh and to buy anything made by EA, those moneygrubbing gamekilling whores.

Food wise, I only wont eat it if it tastes bad, or I just think its nasty.

  10. I avoid fast food, processed (not completely, it's hard haha), and fried stuff.

At home I keep vegetables and meat, meals cooked at home is always better than fast food crap, and much cheaper and actual meat.

As for the palm oil dilemma, I don't care anymore about the fforests because they're fucked anyhow. Nutella is pretty good on toast and peanut butter.

@[member="The Stud"] - 100% serious yo.  I had no idea about palm oil.  After reading your post I googled "why is palm oil bad" and dayum.  That is a horrible industry, like so many others.  I will try to avoid buying products with it now that I know. :smoking:

The list keeps getting smaller and smaller haha.  Pretty soon it's going to be just straight up vegetables, legumes, herbs and spices and rices is all that's left.

  12. I'm a serial boycotter, usually based on service standards rather than ethics. After a company wrongs me personally, I'm very vocal about my displeasure. Telecom companies, the odd niche store, and a handful of restaurants have lost me for life.

As for products, I try to buy ethically, though I can't think of one item or brand I've sworn off for those reasons off the top of my head. My reasonings are usually based on environmental or working standards.

I'm also an avid traveler, and I make a point to do so sustainably. Environmentally and culturally sensitive tour companies, locally based services, and no animal tours under any circumstances.

  13. Oh and throw cigarettes on my never gonna buy list. Fuck those concentrated ultra cancer mk.12s

Only ever bought a pack once as a favor to someone who was broke.

  14. I shop local whenever I can. Big corporations are running this country straight into the ground for the sake of money.

  15.
That certainly does count, and I will include it in my op! What ethical reasons are these?

    That's the spirit :p

That made me happy, we are one tiny step closer to help healing mother earth :smoke:

  16. Anything from afghanistan. Afghan kush, opium, etc .

Sent from my LGLS620 using Grasscity Forum mobile app

  17. Well first of all I dont like doing things Im told to (not big on taking orders) do, and fucking everyone wants me to get a facebook.

But a more applicable to what you mean reason, I dont like that all your personal information is on blast for the world to see, and facebook does nothing to protect it. And I like my privacy, especially with illegal hobbies like marijuana (not growing any, but I have a fuckton of paraphenalia, enough to get me a felony here in backwards ass Florida)

  18.
That makes sense. I am a little too open to really care about it, but I understand that I should care more. ;p

  19. Caffeine.. It's not for me.

  20. I dont really care who knows what I do, until they are a cop or will report me to the cops, then I very much so care :p
