Durable Phones

  1. ive never had a smart phone before, just cheap durable prepaid flip phones, and a recent job upgrade has necessitated me to get a smart phone. but the phone must be durable. ive pretty much decided on the Cat S50. amazing specs on this phone(google that shit and feel bad for your current smartphone).

but i cant find any service providers that carry it. it only seems to be for sale at Home Depot.
as an Android device, would i be able to buy the phone and just go with any service provider i wanted? i really want this phone because i seldom see a smart phone with a non shattered screen or without an otter box. and seeing the video of the iPhone 6 origami was also pretty convincing.

    thoughts? input?

  2. I had to look up that Cat phone as I had never heard of it. It sounds pretty good to me. If there are other phones you like you could get a case like otter box and there are also ones that are drop prof and water resistant. I do like that the Cat phone is Android based as I don't much care for my iPhone. Good luck.

over priced, average specs (sorry to burst your bubble but go look at the oneplus one. my 2yr old phone is 1.4ghz quadcore) and hasnt been out long enough for real wear and tear/long term usability/updates etc. i personally use a galaxy with an otterbox defender case and its fantastic. http://www.otterbox.com/defender-series/defender-series,default,pg.html

if you have never had a smart phone before i would have a look at the moto g http://www.motorola.com/us/Moto-G-2nd-Gen/moto-g-2nd-gen-pdp.html (pretty well the same specs as the CAT, $179 off contract) and otterbox defender case ($50 on their website but im sure it would be cheaper on ebay etc)

  4. its not so much the Cat's software specs that impress me as the phones physicality is what sells me. my new job is a rough hot environment. we have company Galaxy tabs in otter boxes and the rubber on the outside comes away from the plastic shell in hot conditions.

  5. yeah but its still an untested phone from a company with no phone experience etc. i would at least wait to gauge who quick they push updates and that kinda thing where as the moto g might as well be a nexus with how quick they are pushing updates out.

  6. passed by a Verizon store and fell for the Brigadier. you cant scratch the screen. i'll probably try to get it next week.

i dont like the idea of buying something expensive yet disposable like a phone and then having to buy more stuff to protect it.

cell phones are a disposable technology. theres a newer better one every couple months. people perpetually pay for new phones. just make one purchase and be done with it. smartphones are so expensive yet so delicate. i enjoy quality and strength.

  7. dont get the samsung s4 active..

  8.
the problem is that the life of the battery of the phone is going to be a max of 2 years. after that it is going to discharge rapidly, the USB connector will be wearing out taking even longer to charge (if at all). there is only so many time you can discharge a battery and plug in a connector before these are worn out and the cost to replace them is probably going to be more then a new phone. at $500 its a pretty big risk to buy an untested phone, when you can buy 2xMoto G and otterboxes for less.

  9. If he wanted a 1plus, he would probably have to wait a whiile. Im around number 140,000 on the waiting list and it will probably take a while to get an invite. Good phone but the lack of supply is pretty annoying.

  10. That thing looks fucking sweet. Be sure to report back with your review if and when you get one.

I have the Motorola Defy+. It hasn't exactly aged well, but it was good back in its day. It's pretty perfect for the job site; dust and splash proof. It's supplied by and paid for through work though, so I couldn't complain even if I wanted to.

  11. Prepaid flip phones are probably the best since they don't have much to break, and they are cheaper to replace. Anything with a glass screen is gonna break on the first or second drop and that won't work for me well at my job.

  12. a flip phone doesnt have GPS/nav like i need for work.

i ended up saving my money and buying a low cost smart phone. its a ZTE Sonata 4G. its a $50 dollar 4g phone running android. its pretty cool for a first smart phone. i dont expect much in the way of strength, but it has a $50 mail in rebate. it may be a cheap chinese phone, but it seems to be doing the job pretty well. call clarity is really good. loud speakers with little distortion.
