homemade organic soil mix from local hydroponics shop (WNY)

1. Sorry I am not able to provide the exact ratios. I was not able to get them. This is for an indoor project. Goal is to get soil to be perfectly balanced and self sustainable.

I was wondering what else I am going to *need* right off the bat or later down the road for this mix or if it is good as is?

The mix is listed as being all you need from veg to flower due to its "lightness". These are the ingredients:

Setting aside this mix for a second - are you familiar with Coast of Maine in your area?

3. Things it's missing:
Kelp
Alfalfa
Rock dust
Crab meal
Oyster shell powder
Bone meal
Neem meal

Only vaguely. I haven't found a place that carries them thus far....

@[member="beerbrewer"] thank you!!

I did pick up one bag of this stuff but I do need another bag. Why do you bring up coast of maine and how would it be to combine it with this soil I have shown?

The oyster shell powder is kinda redundant as it acts similar to dolomite lime in properly ph-ing however i like it more for its slow release mineral content than lime. If you add any of this stuff to your mix the amount of time needed to 'cook' is minimal, couple weeks. If you have 4 weeks to cook it properly I would recommend that. Let's say you get this mix and decide to add the items I mentioned, then make sure you mix it thoroughly and wet it, preferably with a tea made from (per gallon of aerated water) 1/2 cup ewc and 1 tsp of molasses. Use within 24-36 hours of starting the brew for best results. Wet and mix and let sit, turn maybe once a week.

6. Oh and for ratios to be added it's 1 cup per cu ft of the ammendments I listed minus the rock dust. Not 1 cup each but 1 cup TOTAL. As far as the dust, I have seen anywhere from a recommended amount of 2-4 cups per cu ft.

thank you so much for this useful advice!

there is another soil i plan on mixing with this, it is organic...I think the brand is actually "organics" dark camo looking bag. That will have kelp meal and other meals that this one doesn't...but since they will be mixed I wonder if the ratios will be enough?

8. It's Roots Organics. By Aurora Innovations. My opinion of them is meh. As far as the bottled Nute companies they are probably second to Bottanicare in their processes and third to home and garden in the nutrient line. I HATE Advanced Nutrients tho ymmv here. The Roots soil mixes are good, overpriced as hell tho. You can make the same thing for a third of the price and it would be better.

Seriously all you would need to make a great soil is in a thread started by the illustriously lovely 'in the garden' - called easy soil mix for beginners. Give it a look.

Yea,

I have seen that thread. hmm...I was trying to do this the easy way I guess and spare the need to get so many things. I don't have a car atm so transportation is a bit of an issue.

11. What do you guys think about using this to start my plants, then when my to-be mixture is done cooking I transplant?

12.
Im sure that this idea will work fine. What your soil is really missing is some food. It appears to be more of a "base mix" than a "start to finish" mix.

I am impressed that the store chose "Brown phosphate" (Downtown Tennessee Brown) instead of the same old soft rock phosphate.

You, being in Western NY, are in a good position to really make this soil come alive by adding a mess of Worm Power (Avon, NY) vermicompost.

*IF this were me* I'd still be adding kelp meal, neem cake and perhaps some alfalfa meal/pellets, wetting it and setting it aside for a couple of weeks.

Worm Power. Get some. http://www.wormpower.net/ - "Where to Buy" - http://www.wormpower.net/us/buy/#.VClk_WddUdU

Excellent! thank you so much!

I will add these things to the soil I have right now and in the meantime I will make my own completely from scratch.

since the soil already has some worm castings in it, what should I be looking at ratio wise for adding more?

14. Hard to say since we don't know how many are in there, but since Worm Power is vermicompost and not pure worm castings you could safely add 10%-20% more. A good top dressing at each plant with the Worm Power vermicompost with a little kelp meal mixed in would be another great way to utilize the product.

Good luck.
