I'll get my nail bright red all the way through so I know it's heated evenly then let 'er cool down 10-20 seconds

It depends on the type of nail. Get it red hot since its quartz, just so you know its heated evenly. then depending on the nail, once all of the red goes away, its anywhere from an additional 10-60 seconds before you get a good temp dab.

If it's new quartz it won't get noticeably red though, so watch it closely. only seasoned quartz gets red.

  8. I had a nice quartz nail I used to use. I would get that puppy red hot by heating it from below. When it was red hot, wait for about 5 seconds, then dab. You can also hover your hand over the heated nail to get a good read about how hot it is. You will get the hang of it.
