Are mermaids real?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by untilwesoar, Sep 26, 2014.

  1. So stick with me. If evolution is possible (and i believe it is) i believe there could be mermaids out there. In the depth of the ocean. Theres so much we as humans havent been able to discover simply because we cant yet. 90% of the ocean is unexplored. There are reports of fisherman catching sharks and whales with stab wounds. One person even found an arrow inside of a shark!

I dont believe that they look like us. Not fully, I think they have a similar shape as far as having a head and two arms but with the ability to live in water the skin is going to be a little different and they probably have webbed hands to help swim faster.

What do you think? Could they exist?

  2. They could, but probably not. Just like Big Foot could exist - but probably not.

I remember watching some Animal Planet mockumentary where they tried to make some sensational case mermaids were real. It was completely bogus and I wasted an hour or so of my life watching this drivel.

Why would they evolve arms under water

    Fins are way more efficient

Unless they were leaving the water, arms have no use to them... our ancestors evolved arms and subsequently legs to get out of the water hahaha

There are species with remnants of arms but they are only remnants because they had little use to that species

  4. I think that they probably started more human and as humans learned to stand up straight and evolved to what we are now they evolved into fins. There have been reports of people catching large fish that have already been killed by handmade arrows. So i think they use arms just like us. It probably makes it easier to hunt.

  5. Trolling or you don't understand evolution

  6. Obviously it took hundereds of thousands of years maybe millions but it is scientifically possible. Polar bears. They actually originated as greezly bears but had to move, first color of fur changed, now they have webbed hands and can stay underwater longer. So actually thats excatly how elovution works. But it probably shouldve been worded better. Sorry. Im kinda baked. I think their legs or now fins started as webbed toes then kind of became that one fin and the leg bones started to become a single unit.

  7. I don't really believe in mermaids, but it isn't necessarily what is more efficient, more what trait can survive and be passed on.

If mermaids were real, maybe they have webbed hands which gives me advantage for survival over sea creatures with fins. Just like having hands on land gives us advantage over land creatures.

With hands we can operate tools, weapons, etc

Not disagreeing with you, just a friendly speculation and idea :D

  8.
Having long appendages in the ocean makes you a good target to predators

Not good for continuing a species

Most things in the water with "hands" are amphibious creatures

land is part of their lifestyle

Im not saying i know for fact but its just illogical evolution would bring things back into the ocean,. our hands, the way they are, didnt evolve for a looooong time after we crawled out of the water

  9. If mermaids existed I think we would know.

  10. How? There is esitimated to be over 1,000 species we dont know about.

  11. Usually those hidden species are small.

Large hunting mammals are fairly easy to spot.

Soon they will be debating the legitimacy of the Mexican staring frog from shrikanka.

Right, but aan intelligent manlike species would leave evidence. Its not like.some rare fish that only.lives below a certain depth in one part of the world.

We are talking an entire species of intelligent civilized creatures

I suppose iits possible there are mermaid civilizations in the deepest regions of the sea, I just doubt it.

When time was running out, twcb tried desperate solutions to avoid the coming apocalypse, mermaids were one of their many 'avenues'.
Where other men blindly follow the truth...

There's a lot of shit marine biologist haven't found that lives in the ocean but I doubt mermaids are among them.

  17. Unless they know what humans would do. They'd become pets or science experiments. So they hide, i think they ate afraid of us

  18. This is circular logic.

You want mermaids to exist so you made up logic to explain why we don't see them, instead of chasing your opinion on the actual evidence

  19. Maybe mermaids haven't explored the high depths of earth, just like we haven't explored the deep depths of the ocean.
