Buying A Piece

Discussion in 'Bongs, Dab Rigs, Bubblers, Water Pipes' started by Apple1094, Sep 24, 2014.

  1. Forgive me if this has been asked before. I'm new on here and still learning how to navigate the site.
What is the average price for a glass pipe to smoke out of?
I'm looking for a simple glass pipe that could be about 3in long or whatever. I haven't been smoking that long and don't know what I prefer but I want something portable and small but still good quality and that won't be a waste. I want to have it for coming years and I don't want to get ripped off but I'm looking online and have seen bowls that range from $7 to $50. I'm also considering a grinder but I don't now how useful/needed it is? I don't know what to get or even if ordering online is safe, quality or trustworthy? Maybe I should just run into a head shop and ask for their opinion. But idk if the person would help me all that much. I just need to educate myself on this stuff. but I don't want to be taken advantage of because I'm not sure what the prices should be. Grateful for any input! Thanks!

  2. I'm no pipe expert, but I bought a 3" glass one that fits the description of what you want, in a smoking/vaping shop, and it was about 30 bucks.  I'm sure you could find something for even less.  The only thing I do not like about it is that it does not hold a screen securely.  .

Ok thanks. That price seems reasonable. If I'm looking for cheaper where would you recommend? Should I call a bunch of head shops in my area and ask them their price?
I feel like online everything is cheaper but idk.
Btw I live in the Los Angeles area!
Also explain to me what a screen is and how it is useful/needed. Is it similar to a filter that's in a cigarette?
How can you tell if the screen is good or bad?
What should I look for in a bowl?
    Thanks!

Screens were usually used in wooden and metal pipes, before glass was popularized in recent decades.  I prefer a screen in my glass pipe, since I do not need much weed in a session, as sometimes it's in small pieces and it could come through the pipe while burning.   The screen does not filter the smoke, but keeps the weed from going though the pipe into your mouth.  Most people do not use a screen with a glass pipe, because they smoke very tight buds, and as I said glass pipes don't usually hold a screen in place - but some people let enough resin build up so that the screen will stick to it.   Metal and wood pipes often have ridges or something which will hold the screen in place.   Screens can be purchased online or in most any smoke shop or pipe store. Screens get dirty and clogged after a while and should be replaced.  A typical "spoon" pipe is probably fine for your needs, like the one I have.  Grinders are usually used for rolling joints and blunts.

You could just go into a head shop and ask to see some items in your price range that are popular, they're not likely to steer you wrong if you ask for help.    That's how I did it, with my first and only glass pipe (other than a glass waterpipe I owned a long time ago).

  5. Thanks for all you're help. This is really informative!

  6. Does it have to be 3"? I hate short pipes because I fear burning my face (I've burned eye lashes before on a short pipe).

But depends on your area, there's a local glass shop in my area that has a value bin for like $1-3 and they're about 3".

  7. I would not want to use a short pipe outside in the wind, but indoors I've never burned myself using them with a bic lighter.   Three inches seems very common for glass hand pipes these days.

  8. Why I like chillums, bowl is in the front not top.

  9. Geez, I smoked a chillum a couple of times it was so long ago it's not even a memory anymore, except I recall getting really good hits from it.   The new ones are the same idea as the ones back in my youth, but there's a LOT more variety, and designs today, than then.

  10. It doesn't have to be 3 inches. I just thought that was standard for a spoon glass pipe. I feel like if I go above that it will be expensive. But idk. I live in a very popular area for smoking in the LA area if that helps at all.
