Rationalizing Wasting 140 Gallons Of Water

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by Corn Man, Sep 21, 2014.

  1. Alright, so I am making my final dive into hydroponics soon. I am going to use the Advanced Nutrients Hobbyist level. Now I know you don't HAVE to, please don't come here and remind me of that. I know it isn't required. The thing of it is the fact that you change your nutrients every week, like from Voodoo, to B52 for example. Now if someone knows a work around for that, that would be lovely. Like if you just top off the res that week with what is recommended for that week. That's what I am planning on doing unless I get some sound advice here.

    SO HERE'S THE ISSUE
Now Emptying and Refilling the 140 gallons of water doesn't bug me because of the cost, or the extra nutrients, or getting the water, or any of that, res assured none of that bugs me. The only thing that really gets to me is Wasting 140 gallons of water every single week. I can't do that to the planet. I simply can't. That means every harvest would break 1,000 Gallons of water wasted. I didn't know if I could just empty it into the earth and it would be better than dumping it down the drain, literally. I was just wondering people's thoughts on this matter and if there was a way to rationalize using that much of the earth's water.

  2. I'm not a grower but I'm interested in growing in the future. But I think that brings to light a problem with a lot of growing methods. Cannabis is becoming more industrialized and large scale and with that, the methods need an update. Especially with climate change and the drought in California (Hydro grows had do contribute at least a little). As the industry and knowledge progresses we need to make sure that we can do things right by being environmentally responsible in order to be a truly "green" industry.

Sorry, got a little rambly haha     :bongin:

  3. Thanks for the love guys, I believe I will stick to the base plan and basically when it says use voodoo juice in the res that week, I will just make sure when I top it off during that week, I use voodoo. Not exactly what they want you to do, but like I said. I will lower potency a bit to save the earth until I can afford to reuse the water I empty out.

  4. Why not stop driving your car unnecessarily, recycle, or do something else to reduce your footprint to make up for it?

  5. I already do all of that lmao

  6. Just use the water to water other plants. Simple.

  7. I don't grow enough outdoor plants to use 14 gallons a week, yet alone 140

  8. You could have the best damn lawn in town! Lol

  9. If I could work it into like a sprinkler system, then maybe. Well actually I know how I would do that. Still winter is a thing. That's why I want to find some property that has a lake so I can drain into the ground and no I can just take back the water out of the lake and filter it and reuse it.

  10. Im on week 6 and only changed my water once. Im just checking the water a few times a day as long as your roots are nice a white and there isnt a nasty smell your good. I use Great White in my water and that helps a lot so you dont get root rot. I have 2 tanks I might end up keeping one with the same water and just add to it as the plants drink and empty and refill the other a few more times just to see how both tanks do.

  11.
Well, Regardless, Thanks for recommending a Beneficial Bacteria to use. I have been looking for one for a while. I think I am going with Great White.

How many square feet of plant do you have running off that 140 gallons? I don't get why you are chucking out all that water every week, my plants drink mine and convert it in to water vapour, and more plant of course.

Growing plants is always going to hand out wasted/used products, but the amount of co2 it locks up and how much o2 it produces totally balances it out and then some in my opinion

And what's "wasted" anyway? It's not going anywhere, it's not as if it's leaving the planet. The amount of water we have on this planet is the same as it was before animals roamed it

If it's tipped down a drain, evaporated in to the air, tipped in to soil, it's all going to be evaporated in to the air and rained back down on us eventually anyway. If the water was drinkable it's a different matter but it's not. It's been used for its purpose so I don't see the issue myself

  13. Water doesn't leave the planet?

  14. grow in organic soil if you're concerned.

no chemicals, and no wasted water mixed with chemicals being dumped down the drain.

No it does not leave the planet. Over population can push what the local land can support, but that's something else entirely.

If you don't want to use water then perhaps growing plants isn't for you because they do drink a lot. You can be rest assured that all the water they drink is eventually evaporated and will rain down on someone who needs it so you are benefiting somebody down the line

By having the water in your reservoir you have already taken it out of the system. It doesn't really matter what you do with it after that. when you first fill up from your taps, that's where the difference is made, not what happens to the water after you have used it

I still don't understand why you are dumping all that water anyway

why you dumping all that in the first place?

my dwc uses probably 95% of all the water i put in

only time a dump is necessary is before flowering and a flush at the end. just top off when necessary

  17. I am aware of this, I was trying to rationalize dumping once a week as is suggested vs Keeping it in there all the way through flowering. This has all already been established on this thread.

  18. :confused_2: just another vote for not dumping

why rationalize if it's not necessary

  19. That's fine. I am completely new to Hydro. so I don't even know if that makes a difference at all. I was just going off of the Advanced Nutrients Hobbyist Calender. The only problem is I have to change what I give them week to week and don't know how I would go about that with hydro. My plan was to Just fill the Rest up once a week and use that suggested nutrient solution for that week. Chart Below. I was thinking to just have them fuck off if they weren't going to increase yield/potency by at least a few percent. (Note I didn't alter the values in the chart below to match my res size)

So I guess the real question is Should I

1.) Not use them at all

2.) Just when I top off the res, abide by which week it is.
