Opinions On Charlies Compost???

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by sisterwilliam, Sep 19, 2014.

  1. So I'm having a hard time finding good bagged compost, and won't be making my own until next spring. Some brands I have available to me are Roots Marine Green (which I have a few bags of), Soil Secrets TTP Supreme Compost, and possibly Charlies Compost. The grow shop I do business with is a Sunlight Supply dealer, and Gardeners Digest. Gardeners Digest stocks Charlies.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with Charlies Compost and if so what's your opinion on it's quality?

My plan is to feed it to the worms and add kelp, oyster shell, rock powders and various other things.

Have you been able to feel and smell this compost? Since it's made with chicken manure that might be a good idea to determine how completely the compost was finished.

I've used it once. Not that I know anything about compost but I didn't care for it but that's based purely on a visual examination. The bag I got seemed dry and was brown instead of the rich dark black I see in the coast of maine compost I now use. Could have jus been the bag I got too. I'm not known for my good luck. It sounds good on their website tho.

Coot, no I haven't  had the chance to check it out. It's not an Item that's stocked here, they'll have to order it for me.

I forgot to mention that Ive been using both Marine Green and TTP for close to a year. The marin green is a dark rich compost that the worms love. TTP is a dark brown compost that smells like amonia when I open the bag and the worms won't touch it.

I'd keep buying tha Marine G but roots has discontinued making it...SW

  5. Thanks for the reply Solo,

Dry and brown, that doesn't sound very appealing!

Have you checked for a retailer in your area that sells Worm Power vermicompost? It's even available in Orygunz which is as far away from their operation as possible except for Alaska and Hawaii.

The price here is the same as if you lived on the East Coast - they average their freight rates which is what you have to do if a company wants any level of market penetration.

    Just an idea...

  7. Thanks Coot, but looks like the closest place to get it is 220 miles away. If it comes down to me needing to drive somewhere to get compost I can visit Build a Soil. He's only a two hour drive from where I live. He sells Oly Mountain Fish compost. I'm even temped to just order Stutzman sup'r green. Though, I'll have to pay a premium to have it shipped to me...thanks again. SW

Here's a couple of suggestions for sourcing....

Colorado Nursery & Greenhouse Association and the Colorado Farmers Market Association

Hitting a local farmers market and talking with the farmers is always the best way to find out about sourcing high-quality materials. You might even get lucky and have a farmer offer to sell you a couple bags of compost from their worm bins. It's been my experience that the folks who participate in these markets are helpful, courteous and know the lay of the land (no pun intended).

It helps to be creative in these matters to avoid S&H charges which can be a real deal-killer.
